Vegan Ranges - what do you recommend?

In an effort to cut down on sat fat and red meat, which I have been gorging on for years, I am choosing to do a part-time vegan diet. Full vegan for 6 days a week, and then including meat and dairy for 1 day a week.

I have a few ideas for vegan dishes, such as vegan shepherds-style pie and curries are pretty easy.

I can't be doing with cooking all the time though, so I would like some ready made stuff.

I went to Holland and Barrett today to buy a vegan stash. Very expensive, but if the stuff tastes good, then I don't mind.

I've tried the falafels, burgers, vegetable pasty and sliced cheese. All quite nice. I also have various other bits and bobs to try, inc chocolate, mushroom pâté, hot dogs, chorizo, and sausage roll.

Which vegan ranges or items do you like (apart from fruit and veg!)? I looked for vegan biscuits in H&B but they didn't have them in stock.

I've tried a lot of the Linda McCartney range and liked the sausage rolls, the red onion sausages and country pies were all pretty nice. I've also tried some vegan bacon from a local health food shop, it looked awful, but actually tasted pretty good.

I've read several reviews that spoke highly of the Amy's Kitchen range. Obviously you need to check which dishes are vegan but generally they get a lot of compliments.

Sounds promising. Think I might hit up Tesco tonight for some LMc stuff.

I tried my vegan hotdogs today for lunch and they were nice.
The mushroom pâté is very tasty indeed.
Gonna get some vegan pesto and make a wrap-pizza thing.
I'm pleasantly surprised by vegan junk foods. Must get round to doing some actual cooking though!

Both Tesco and Sainsbury's label some of their Vegetarian and Meat Free products as being vegan. I'd look there.

There are all sorts of burgers, pies, bakes and so on.

In my experience, all Linda McCartney products are absolutely swilling in fat.

I don't mean to be irritating, but why you are going down the ready-meal route if part of your aim is to cut down on saturated fat? Vegan junk food is still junk food.

I can cook but I need junk food inbetween.
My last blood test showed high cholesterol. One of the main factors causing high cholesterol is a diet high in sat fat.
I might be missing something here but...is sat fat not fat obtained through meats, eggs and dairy?

Not only in meat and dairy. Palm oil, for example, is high in saturated fat and is used a lot in vegetarian/vegan ready-meals. Coconut oil also. I've just looked at a few of the Linda McCartney products and they all contain palm oil and some are really quite high in saturated fat. A lot of sugar too, like most other ready-meals.

I am gonna be careful with reading the back of packets now, I got another vegan stash yesterday, this time from Tesco. I put a few things back because of the presence of palm oil, I remember reading ages ago that palm oil is not that healthy. And of course the hydrogenated veg oil.

I do need to get round to cooking, admittedly I was VERY lazy this past week and had a bit too much from the stash!

Today is my non-vegan day though

The sausages have 3x less fat in them, then most meat sausages.
