Iceland have been my second team in this tournament. Love their story, their commentator on the winning goal the last game and most importantly the legend that is Eidur Gudjohnsen getting a run out at the tender young age of 38.
They have no fear coming into this game and that must not be underestimated. If we don't get an early goal, the longer the game goes 0-0, the more confident the team will be. Roy has no Plan B for their tactics. If we do manage to royally c*ck this up, I will be pleased for Iceland. |

Anyone who thought this was a good draw was just displaying their ignorance.

Easy Iceland, they said.
It will be a wall in the park they said. We can't wait to meet France, they said.

I was quite shocked after the Ireland Italy game when they returned to the studio and Gary Lineker had a big grin on his face as he announced that England would be playing Iceland. I thought it was so disrespectful. And cocky!

Huge relief from the pundits on TV. Its only Iceland! 300,000 people or something LOL.
. Personally I think this might be huge banana skin in the making for England, I actually think Portugal would have been better, because the players would have been psyched up and into 'battle mode' knowing they are playing a good team, Ronaldo etc. Now they'll know they'll just take it easy, relax. Cakewalk 4-0 or something. England do near-embarrassments well, remember Cameron 1990? Apparently Howard Wilkinson called that "a bye" before the game. I don't like these games where England are expected to thump some mickey mouse team, who are also unbeaten so far. All the pressure on England for this one, surely they aren't going to mess it up against...Iceland!? ![]() If they screw this up they'll be the laughing stock of the tournament, and will probably surpass their defeat to the USA in 1950. ![]() Can I have the lottery numbers for Saturday, please. |

If Iceland only had a forward like Vardy ....
They remind me of the way Greece played for each other when they won it. |

Here lies the problem why I started this thread in the first place.
Gary Lineker @GaryLineker · 48m48 minutes ago The worst defeat in our history. England beaten by a country with more volcanoes than professional footballers. Well played Iceland. 'More volcanoes than professional footballers' you see its this attitude that costs England. The pundits (not all) have been treating them as a strange curiosity ever since they drew them 'hmm what are they doing here?' as if they are a bit of a joke. What England did here is what I feared they might do, played the name ICELAND what they are 'supposed' to be (i.e. minnows) and not the ACTUAL XI players on paper. This is the same team that came above the Netherlands and Turkey in qualifying, unbeaten in group involving Austria, Portugal and Hungary. They're obviously decent. They were better off playing Portugal, mainly because they're about as good as Iceland Ronaldo and Nani aside, and England would have been 'up for it' and in 'battle mode' because of previous encounters, so it would have been a grudge match. But they took their foot the gas and played the name Iceland and not the actual team, I didn't expect them to lose, but am I surprised they made an arse out of it? No. |

On the bright side the English team will be heading home to their mansions, wags and sports cars and will still be the among highest paid footballers in the world. They really don't have to care it as long as the big bucks keep rolling in.

The quarter finals are filled with multi-millionaires with attractive wives and fast cars. Money is not why England failed, it's the laziest argument possible.

Wish people would stop wittering on about their money as if it excuses their woeful underperformance tonight. They failed because they were awful, and they couldn't even string more than a couple of passes together without giving it away, their ball retention on the ground was equal to a poor National League side, and they had no insight into where their compatriots were. Then lets look at the way Iceland played. They kept a tight back 4/5 at all times, caught England on the hop, knew where to place a pass to good effect and took their chances when they came. Iceland didn't win because they had stunning world beaters. They won because they had mastered the basics of playing football AS A TEAM. |

The worrying sign was there two mins or so after the England penalty. Icelend scored so quickly you had a feeling this was anything but an easy team to beat. I think England playing well would have found Iceland tough opposition but that scenario never happened. England played badly and we're out, out, out!

I think there needs to be a change in mentality so we play as a TEAM, but this idea its all about the money is false imo, until very recently England players werent paid a fee for representing their country and its not like the players from Spain, Italy etc don't have fast cars, girls etc!
There should be more than just a ragtag of club players. WTF is the point of sailing through the qualifiers so we play shite in tournaments? The last time we put on a good display in a tournament (imo) I had finished my A Levels 14 years ago

No. Iceland were not being given the respect they deserved, they got 5 points from their group and as you say finished above Holland and turkey in qualifying, they are certainly no mugs and know how to get results. Yes England should be winning this game but Iceland were written off as no hopers when they are clearly a capable side. I also agree that in hindsight portugal would have actually been better because they would have naturally been less complacent given the Ronaldo factor. |

If anything England were the term that should have been looking to try and cause the upset and beat Iceland, such was the disparity in terms of the teams, and make no mistake about they had the far superior "team", once again at a tournament we had a collection of names, and not a team.
We were the team everyone wanted to face, as we are easy pickings these days at international tournaments, especially in the knock out rounds. How anyone could say with a straight face that we were favourites for this match I have no idea. Nothing points to us being favourites for a match in a knock-out round of f a tournament, but you just know if we are so lucky as to get to Russia, yet again the press and media will build and hype us up, and have us favourites for matches! It is the same God damn thing at every tournament, we simply do not deserve to be favourite for any knock-out match, no matter who the opposition are. |
