Hi guys can you Help??????
I have Hitachi TV with built in Dolby processor... very nice but unable to jack out to speakers unless they are amp'd... OK no problem... I decided to buy Sony Home Theatre Kit where all 6 TV outputs can be jacked into... nice sound... however all functions on Sony kit are disabled.... (and all my gagets are currently connected to TV via 3 scart connections.)
Next problem...Phillips DVD has coax digital out put (TV has socket for this) Sony kit has new digital jack..(tiny square pin...optical I think )....
Sony kit has inputs for TV, Video, 5.1 (as in TV description) plus 2 of the small optical inputs for DVD and Minidisc.

Question time.... if you are still with me......
Can I just use the left and right outputs from the TV and connect to the TV in on the sony kit.......
Is there an adaptor out there for the digital coax lead to the new mini lead... or should I go from the L/R jacks on the DVD to the Video jacks on the sony kit
Can I jack in my Digibox to the video input on the ony kit if I want to...

Many questions .... and loads of leads....
Thanks D

I have the Sony HTK 215 home cinema kit. This is how I have everything connected.

PS2 -> DVD player -> RGB Scart on TV

Digibox -> VCR -> Scart 2 on TV

Phono leads from TV to TV input on Amp

Phono leads from Digibox to Video input on Amp

Digital cable from DVD to optical input on Amp.

I think there is an adaptor to convert a coaxial to an optical input but I am not too sure about this. If you have a look at the long thread running about HTK 215 (run a search) if my memory serves me right, I think someone else asked the same question. I know a few people have bought this home cinema kit and ended up buying a new dvd player. No doubt someone will tell you for sure.

Basically any phono leads outputs you have can be attached to the Amp's inputs whether there be from tv, video, Sky or a dvd player. The TV's outputs will carry all stereo signals to the amp provided all the equipment you attach is with scart leads to the TV. Thereby by just connecting your phono leads to any of the phono inputs on your amp you will get Dolby Prologic sound. However, you are obviously losing out on the superior Dolby Digital 5.1 sound till you get your dvd player connected directly to the Amp. I hope all this makes sense.

You mean the L&R phono jacks? No. You want to connect the DVD to the amp with the digital (optical) cable so you get Dolby Digital.

If you do mean phono jacks (white and red plugs) you can connect it to the amp but you would only get Dolby Prologic sound. There is no point because as I said before the phono leads from your tv will feed the dvd sound in any case. To get the best from your system you really need to connect the dvd player direct to your amp via the optical input, if this is possible. Dolby Digital 5.1 is a far superior sound to the Prologic.

Definately gonna be a noisy weekend now.... specially for the neighbours...

By the way guys, im going to purchase a HTK475 amp and speaker set and I asked the Sony Centre shop the best way to connect the Amp to the DVD player i.e. via coaxial or optical digital lead because both the DVD player and amp have the inputs. They advised me that coxial connection would produce the best sound. Is this true because I trust you guys more than I do the guys in the shop. Im planning to buy Sky+ soon so im assuming the digital input will need to be left free for that so I can recieve some of the movies in Dolby Digital. Also, whats the normal CD music play back like through the amp set im going to buy? Will the amp convert it into a good stereo system?

Thanks for your help

Coaxia, optical...there as good as each other.

Whichever amp you get, just make sure that you have at least two digital inputs, the more the better. Don't forget CD players, DAT Tapes, mini-disca are all capable of using optical outputs.

You may not have all of these now, but who knows in the future?

I have had 2 x Pro-Logic amps and 1 x DD amp and not one of them was/is as good as my 22 year old Sanyo amp for pumping out good old 2-channel stereo.

I think this is the case for most AV amps.

Thanks for your help, im still a little bit undecided about the HTK475 amp set because many people have suggested I wait for an amp which includes Pro Logic 2. Has anyone actually heard Pro Logic 2 and is it worth the wait and paying the extra money for? By the way what are the are the SA-VE225 speakers like that come with the HTK475 package? The system im looking for is to be put in my bedroom which is approximately 42m" in size. I need the system to impress my dad who is moaning at me for investing in what he calls "rubbish I dont need". Is the package likely to impress him? Finally, when normal cd's are played on my dvd player does the sound come through all the speakers or just selected ones?

Thanks again
