a poor game... and an unfortunate own goal that decides it. gutted for mcauley.

wales will have to play a helluva lot better than that in the quarter final...

Never let Robbie Savage commentate again, he is unbelievably bad. He slurs his words, he struggles to pronounce words and he struggles to think of any words.

You always had a sense that one moment of quality in a match that had little would decide the match - and so it proved.

Northern Ireland had the best of the match in general but really did nothing with it - and at this stage you need something a little bit more than resoluteness and teamwork.

Credit to Chris Coleman on the substitutions which gave Wales more of a footing in that second half which led to the goal.

Woeful game of football.

What must the rest of Europe be thinking watching that match? It was dire.

Phew, it's over.

Poor performance from too many of the welsh players today. No composure or plan how they were going to win.

Despite this we came through against a negative NI side and move on to the last eight of the Euro 2016 championships. (yay )

Cannot think of anything positive to say about that match except I am glad it did not go to extra time.

as i said earlier, belgium won't ever have a better chance to reach a semi-final of a major tournament...

"Not the Wales we're used to in this tournament..."

Really? That's the Wales I've seen in this tournament, except for maybe the Russia game.

NI will be gutted, eliminated by an average looking side. Perhaps if they'd had a bit more nous and self belief they could have snuck through.

Unfortunately Bale's quality on its own makes the whole team more than an ordinary side.

You made the point earlier that Wales only had one shot on target but you only need one to score the only goal of a game.

Wales were negative too : one shot on target in 90 minutes

That'll be Belgium who still have to get past Hungary and we took four points off in the qualifying group.....

We struggled as we normally do with being slight favourites today. It's been a pattern of one good display followed by a poor one so far in the tournament for Wales. That continues on Friday then we could get to the semis.

Agree completely, nearly all their best stuff came via him today.

Not sure who Wales get in the quarters but whoever it is must be running their hands with glee ... basically stop Bale and you stop Wales.

Northern Ireland did nothing in that last 20 minutes but had played pretty well the rest of the game.

Belgium's style of play suits Wales much better though. They'll go forward but tend to pass around edge of the box so ample opportunity for Wales to break away with Bale. Obviously still a huge opportunity for them but hopefully it leads to a more interesting match at least.

The Welsh smugness is starting to grate somewhat.

Gareth McAuley will be retiring now - from international football at least. He'll be 38 by the time the next World Cup comes around. What a finish for him.

Both teams rubbish, N.I have never been great and shouldn't really have got gotten this far and I'm from N.I but then Wales have been the same. Both keepers had very little to do.

Could even be Hungary you're facing - they have a lot of goals in them (six in the group).

This fixation with Bale is pissing me off.

They must of showed the replay of that free kick 4 times and they were saying great save lol, the keeper could of caught it.
