When you play active sport you build up much more spittle and mucus than in normal activity. You then have 2 options to get rid of it, spit it out or swallow it.

The reason you see it more in football is because there are a load of cameras pointed at everyone on the pitch all the time.

So why do some do it when coming straight off the bench on to the pitch or at the start of a match? they haven't done anything yet.

Presumably they have been warming up for a while. I wouldn't have thought they'd be coming off the bench cold.

I think we both know that's rubbish, tbh. Basketball players don't do it. Footballers do it even before the whistle is blown to start play. Were footballers spitting everywhere in the 50s and 60s?

I used to do quite a bit of running and I don't recall this overwhelming urge to spit on the ground every five minutes.

Exactly. I dont see tennis players doing it either. The excuses for footballers doing it are crap. Its disgusting.

Although what is even more gross is the finger on one nostril while flying snot out of the other. Yuck ! Why ?

Won't SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN

Basketball players are subbed on and off a lot, tennis players have a sit down and a drink every handful of games.

A blocked nose makes it harder to breathe, oxygen is quite important for exercise, football kits don't have a hankie pocket.

The players always tend to spit a well built up one after they miss the goal.

Then sure enough, cameras pan right into the players face.

I actually use the same method for blowing my nose as well, although its not apparently the way you SHOULD do it, it does seem to be most effictive!!

So ? Footballers are spitting before they actually do anything. I have never spat when playing football, there is no need for it, it's gross.

It's like a Mumsnet thread. The only acceptable answer is clearly that modern footballers are disgusting and terrible role models, other sports and the past is better.

I assume you play at the same intensity level, so you should tell them your secret.
