Would the old style 4 groups of 3 still work for knockouts like Spain 82

If they are staying with this format but not only so the groups need looking at but for the last few tournaments knock outs have been awful, they were awful in Brazil as well.

Teams just play for penalties now.

Top two only through 12 teams

3 teams X 4 groups gives us 4 semi finalist

Spain 82 so many good games apart from Italy group

England departed Espana 82 after two goalless draws in the 2nd phase.

Biggest flaw was that one team sat out the final match of each group and therefore open to abuse by a team throwing in the towel after losing their first match.

Yeah also in a 3 team group with team A, team B and team C. If teams A & B have been drawn to play the final match then both teams could try and play out draws with team C and then fight it out in the final match to see who goes through to the semis.

Wouldn't the proposed increase of the World Cup to 40 teams (8 groups of 5) have the same problem?

I don't think they were awful in Brazil at all.

I don't think you can tinker too much. If games have so much jeopardy you have to just accept that they won't all be free-flowing and open. They though golden and silver goal would help encourage attacking play, they both made teams terrified to leave their own half.

if they're going to stay with 24 teams, then i think it should be the winner of each group and two of the best runner ups straight into the QFs...that would make it more competitive in the group and knock out stages
