That's nonsense. The Irish team played positive attacking football in three of the four games and didn't even resort to set pieces in order to create chances - the only negative and defensive performance came against Belgium.
And losing 2-1 to the host nation in the last 16 is hardly a shameful or humiliating performance or result, is it? |

You only won one game and as its been said already most of the 3nd place teams went through that's the other reason you got as far as you did.

All of Me's a Wales fan, England's results have similarly been excused with a load of 'yeah but' by him too.

In that case, if he didn't like the Irish performance today, he must have been bitterly disappointed by the Welsh one yesterday (1 shot on target in a game where they were very warm favourites).

Oh I see

You sure?Doubt whether he was bitterly disappointed yesterday, tbh. It was scrappy, but we won and played okay for the last 30 minutes after Jonny Williams and Robson-Kanu came on. Still, all rather OT, sorry. |

Ah, a fellow Wales fan, eh?

Still, all rather OT, sorry. I'm not sure why All Of Me is sniping at the ROI team and their performances and saying "good riddance" to them. Overall they've acquitted themselves very well bar the Belgium game, and haven't relied on set pieces to create chances.

And losing 2-1 to the host nation in the last 16 is hardly a shameful or humiliating performance or result, is it? Ireland really didn't impress. They scored early and tried to hold out against a French team showing a lot of flair. In both halves, France were able to easily get the ball in midfield. In modern football, defences can hold out against superior attacking forces. That's why there a lot more draws, a lot less goals, and more penalty shoot outs. It always seems wrong when a defensive team is able to beat a much better attacking team. The right team won. No doubt at all. |

I just picked this one at random.

It always seems wrong when a defensive team is able to beat a much better attacking team. The right team won. No doubt at all. Their performance dropped in the second half and the French improved considerably and were rewarded accordingly. Not sure how Ireland can be accused of playing defensively when they went with two strikers who spent a lot of time up around the opposing penalty area. Incidentally, Ireland are the only losing team in the last 16 to score a goal or lead : the other five losing teams drew a blank. |
