Chris Martin and Coldplay, what's their appeal????
I just don't get it. How they're apparently so popular.
![]() Chris Martin, all the charisma of a kipper. Their music very bland. |

He even has a depressing tone to his voice. Never have seen the appeal. The only song I like of theirs is Sky Full of Stars and I think that's more to do with it being an Avicii collaboration.

You could say the same about anything you don't like. What's the appeal with mushrooms, scatter cushions, cold weather... Etc. You either like something or you don't. Music is subjective. If it doesn't appeal to you, it doesn't. Surely you can understand that others WILL like it.
i didnt like disco for eg, personally i thought it was rubbish - but i can see the appeal. im with the op.... they are utterly mind numbingly boooorrrring.. drab, dull, uninspiring. |

I saw Coldplay live a few years ago. They do what they do very well and the live show was impressive but for me musically they are as dull as ditch-water. Fortunately for me the mighty Polly Jean Harvey was on BBC 4 at the same time!!!

They seem to be a very mediocre band, that's all I can say.

Surely Coldplay hate is as safe and conservative as the band themselves.
Starbucks rock for a Starbucks generation they may largely be, but in feel-good, confetti-canon stadium dance mode they at least look like they're enjoying being the band they always wanted to be, and the crowd responds accordingly. Fair play I suppose. |

Chris Martin writes achingly beautiful songs with uncannily memorable tunes to which audiences will always want to sing along.
Everyone at a Coldplay gig gets what they expect and what they want to hear and, above all else, everyone has a really good time. That's the appeal. |

I've never really liked them, as they are just not my cup of tea. I'm not fussed on Chris Martin and I find their music rather dull and boring. I think I've only ever liked one song by them and that was Clocks.

He headlined at Glastonbury last year and by all accounts was well received, but although I watched quite a lot of his set (I'd heard the name before but had assumed it was a girl, so was quite surprised when this bloke came on!) hoping to find something about it that I could relate to, I just found him so boring, self obsessed and downright, well .. erm .. rappy! Virtually every 'song' sounded the same and I couldn't make out many of the words, but then I find that with virtually all rap stuff. I'll be honest, I hate it but I can't understand the appeal either. I guess I need to hear from someone who's really into rap-type music to understand what they like about it. |

what bothers me about them is I don't understand who they are anymore, they seem to try and stay relevant in terms of chart success but in doing that they have made some stuff that betrays their better quality work in the past. I almost feel they are so desperate to stay relevant they go with what the charts are doing and don't really control their own artistic direction. They are now a pop band I can't take seriously. I can see why people like them, worse bands have appealed to the masses so that doesn't surprise me at all....

I saw them live once (against my will, better judgement, etc) and I thought "well a show is a show, they might be somewhat less than dire shit live". It was dreadful, just so lacking in punch.
I think thats what people dislike about them, its the fact they are so middle class, so pedestrian, so lacking in any edge or vibrance. There was one song from an old album that I thought was alright, nothing fancy, but alright. But otherwise they are so tame, beige is their colour. |

I don't particularly like Coldplay (a few songs are OK) but they write anthemic songs that get huge crowds going. It's not hard to understand their appeal at all.

(runs for cover...) Isn't that cliche getting a bit lame by now! You'd think after all these years you might be able to flesh it out with more than a meaningless seven word cliche. |

TBH I turned over after half an hour and watched Earth, Wind and Fire instead on BBC4.

The majority of music fans in England are Zombies. how on earth can bands and singers like Adele, Coldplay and Sam Smith be the biggest selling artists ffs? I find it weird as ****.

You really have to see them live to get their full appeal imo, that's why they've toured so heavily ever since the beginning.
I've been to loads of their gigs over the years and have been directly behind, next to etc countless grown men who'd begrudgingly accompanied a partner and ended up blown away, from the point of being speechless to (honestly) shedding tears of joy in a handful of cases. They're a remarkable live band. It's just such a shame they rely so heavily of backing tapes now, because I've seen just the four guys with their instruments in a very small setting, and they were just as good. They don't need to play the big overblown pop act. They could have played an 'old school' Coldplay set at Glastonbury and still walked away with rave reviews. I'm very anti them these days btw for other reasons, so I'm not saying this as a fan, far from it, I wish they'd disappear from the planet! |

Quite a few people on here have been talking about Coldplay wanting to remain 'relevant'.
What exactly does that mean? They are who they are, they appeal to many and not to some. What they do they do really well; it obviously works because, like them or not, they're one of the highest earning gigging bands on the planet. |
