They'd played it before without any problems, and since when did resting players become a problem? We see it week in week out in the league.
They all had a major breakdown elating to fear, panic etc. They couldn't do the simple things they normally do without thinking. Were they not used to playing in a knockout match at a major tournament |

What do you was the reason for the major breakdown
Were they not used to playing in a knockout match at a major tournament I really cannot understand why England went into panic-mode. France was under far greater pressure to win on home soil against Ireland because expectations for this French team are sky high and nothing less than a title will do. They went behind against a very tough to crack Ireland fighting for their lives. Did the French have a mini-meltdown and stop playing? Clearly not. They went on the attack and used all their superior quality to break the Irish down. I don't see why the England team capitulated in the 18th minute? |

Were they not used to playing in a knockout match at a major tournament? (Made up stat)......90% of performance in top level sport is mental. You can blame the manager but it's a reoccurring problem. England (as a team over recent decades) do not handle the pressures of knockout matches very well. Of course, that's only half the story. Matches are between two teams and Iceland did their homework and saw the aerial weakness of their defence and exploited that. They came with a plan, carried it out, didn't freeze on the big occasion, and showed heart and skill. You have to admire that and say fair play. The better team on the night won. Iceland aren't as bad as some people make out. England aren't that good that they should be definitely beating many teams. Any team in a knockout match is a tough opponent. Their fans are superb too. |

Well, they should be more used to it than Iceland surely...

In my opinion they panicked because they did not have faith in the manager and the gameplan was falling apart as Iceland's gameplan appeared to be working to a tee and every shot they had looked like a potential goal. Roy never struck me as someone who could instil confidence in a player. You expected them to come out fighting for the second half but in reality we just got worst as the clocked ticked on. Roy is 90% to blame.

My favorite newspaper comment will be remembered for the rest of my life - "....a new benchmark for humiliation..."
![]() We seem to lack both football players and politicians of stature in this country nowadays.

If the problem is mental then what about bringing in Steve Peters.
