Southgate is a typical English candidate. Safe, cooperate and bland.

Howe seems worth a shout, although he has no experience of playing international football

Gareth Southgate leading the early betting on being the next England manager, currently at 8/1!
Who's your money on to get the job? Gary Neville looking tempting at 10/1. Full list =>http://www.paddypower.com/bet/football-specials/manager-specials/Next-Permanent-England-Manager-4984795.html |

Southgate just lead the England youngsters to their first Toulon title in over 20 years - the FA will love that kind of thing.
You are right though the English FA would love that even though Southgate has done nothing to suggest he is ready for such a job. |

Things will only get worse if we appoint Southgate at least Hodgson had some International management experience at the highest level as well as managing the likes of Inter Milan and Liverpool(even if it was a disaster), Hodgson had a proven track record. The FA are stuck in the dark ages, we are no further forward than we were in the 1980's when the FA were too scared to appoint Brian Clough because of his reputation despite the fact the man was a managerial genius, we will continue to be international nearly man and the wait for a International trophy will go on and on as the FA is run by men who have no idea about the game. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if people were having the same conversations and debates about the England Manager and team in another 50 years time or after we are all long dead as nothing ever changes with the FA. It is also a sad state of affairs when the bookies favourites to take over as the next England manager are Gary Neville who failed as a manager at Valencia and lasted under 6 months and Southgate who did nothing of note at Middlesbrough as manager and hasn't managed at the highest level for years, were are the bright young English managers? |

I doubt any manager can make England play well at the knockout stages of a major tournament. I think Alex Ferguson is the only 'what if' candidate that might have achieved something. Perhaps.

Is it too early for Eddie Howe to be considered? He's still early into his career but I see more potential in him then a Pardew or a Southgate.

I have said for a while this is most definitely not the summer to be looking to appoint a new English head coach, as there really is not that much out there to pick from, but Roy really had no other option to stand down, so we are in a right pickle.
Names such as Southgate, Neville, Howe, and Redknapp, just show how hard it will be to find an adequate successor, as all of the best managers are (a) foreign, and (b) are already at other clubs. That is why it was a farce to see Rodgers' name on the betting list, (another foreigner though), as he has just joined a club. It is going to be Southgate, we all know it, as The FA, always go for the safe, sensible, no controversial option, someone that is a glorified yes man. They are allergic I think to taking a chance on someone that might not be in line with everything that they want a manager to do, and to play their corporate favourites. It just sums up the state of the country at the moment, a mess all around. |

Gareth Southgate is the favourite, but he is simply not strong enough as a charcater to take them to Russia for a World Cup.
The list is not strong but I would go Sam Alladyce. The reason being is that he would get defending properly as a unit and contrary to belief he does manage flair players. His first Bolton team consisted of Youri Djorkaeff and Jay Jay Okocha. He also was a pioneer of sports science, statistics scoutingn the opposition and fitness. He is a coach who is tactically aware and for one tournament, why not? |

Can't the FA, UEFA and FIFA give Alan Shearer special dispensation? He might not have all the badges but he always knows where the England team are going wrong when I see him doing his TV punditry. Surely that would translate into success on the pitch.

What needs to happen is that everyone involved with appointing Roy Hodgson and keeping him in the job needs to be sacked.

I'd have Louis van Gaal managing England in a heartbeat.
Yes, he didn't really work out at United but he worked wonders for the Netherlands immediately beforehand, taking perhaps their weakest side for decades to third in the World Cup was no mean feat. It won't be exciting football but when was it ever? |
