Picking Sterling again after his abject failure in the group games? Not having Townsend in the squad? Picking Wilshere when not match fit? Not using Rashford enough? A settled side of players in form would have secured victory.

The main fault was the lack of organisation. When players began to panic there was no simple default game plan to revert to. So we saw very good players (man for man better than anything Iceland had) playing very badly and above all aimlessly.

Glen Hoddle now second favour at 6/1, looks like a lot of money going on him!

http://www.paddypower.com/bet/football-specials/manager-specials/Next-Permanent-England-Manager-4984795.html

I wouldn't be too disappointed if he got it, he talks a lot of sense as a pundit and was only pushed out last time due to his religious beliefs which was very unfiar from the press imo!

Stuart Pearce talks a good game, but has never succeeded at the top management level. Best to stick to punditry. Gary Nevile speaks even more sense, but he hasn't managed to transfer his tactical nous to coaching yet either.

If there is a deeper problem it's the hubris and entitlement that surrounds the England team and the media that promotes them. There needs to be some reality about England's chances and prospects. Take some of the hope and expectation out of things and let players play with freedom. We had a few young and talented attacking players coming through and suddenly we were told we can win the tournament. That expectation falls heavily on the players. If anything they wanted to win the game too much, yet were woefully badly prepared for it. Iceland won with simple tactics, better organisation and better fitness (with fantastic support to roar them on). England fans frequently booing their team in contrast.

The elephant in the room is the FA and how it runs the game. That is the one constant factor which explains so much about how things go wrong most tournaments.

However it must be said that for the first two games England looked very good going forward. Plenty of movement and some good positive possession. We should easily have won the group. One utterly abject performance does not mean the team were total failures the rest of the time.

Is it not as simple as picking players who suit a system rather than trying to find a system to suit the players ?

Hoddle might be a bit of a PR non-starter (won't go well with any disabled groups the FA are involved in..)

Mind you there aren't many appealing options in terms of British managers (Redknapp doesn't want the job..)

Depends if the FA want to risk more furore and go foreign again.

The next England manager needs to be able to keep a lid on the expectation and keep the players more grounded.

why would a boss hire an undermanager who is not a "yes man"?

i certainly wouldnt hire a person who was not going to agree with my decisions, i hire people to carry them out!

First thing I would do is not get the best manager available. I would avoid managers with experience too. This policy has failed us every time before.

WE need an average manager and one with some, but not loads of experience.

FA Executive has just been on the radio saying that they're going to have a meeting soon to 'scope out the key deliverables'

so.......err, that'll all be good then

We've already tried that with Graham Taylor and Steve McClaren. It didn't turn out so well.

Easy for the Tories. They all just vote for their favourite lying POS and the one with the most votes wins (and we all lose). The FA have a long tradition to uphold. To select someone really terrible from a very talented field of candidates. That's not an easy job at all.

Let's hope going forward they manage to find someone with the right skillset to be able to leverage synergies.

The key deliverables don't exactly need scoping out and can't have changed much since last time. Qualify for each tournament and at least get to the quarter finals.

Oh, and don't shag the secretary.

When it comes to the new manager, we need blue sky thinking to maximise brand awareness too. Let's touch base at the end of play.

Next Manager?
Ian Holloway.

We won't win anything (but we never do, so no problem there) but the post match press conferences would be entertaining.

I keep hearing the name

Laurent Blanc

I dont know why

Maybe because he is French

Or Maybe

He has managed France so he has international experience

Does that mean someone who can deliver a ball? If so, we're on the right track then, as so far we have been woeful in that department.

International experience, domestic and European club football, speaks English, a good age, currently unattached. As good a combination as there currently is. Also it's because I paid someone to follow you around whispering his name all day. Classic prank
