I think he is the best candidate, but he is an outsider because the FA want the team to have an English manager

Plus he is an ex Man United player, so gets my vote!

Only joking, on a serious side, he would be an excellent choice I think, hence why The FA will not pick him.

I'd try Hiddink if he's available. He's always impressed me so if anyone can create a mentally strong team with a known style of play then I'd go for him. In a sense, I think the problems run deeper than management.

Oh, and just to add, just please not Wenger.

Hiddink would make sense to me. He's experienced, successful and calm and will command the respect of the players. He's touching 70 but he could go until the next World Cup while a more long term solution was cultivated.

I think there is decent talent there but they've been sent out without much of a plan. England need a manager who knows how they want to set a team up and what sort of football they want to play. Then pick the players and drill it into them so they aren't so clueless when things start to get difficult.

Defintiely a good manager. But father time catching up with him? Holland aren't at euros as they stuffed up qualification under Hiddinks reign so he got the boot:

His managerial style seems to very relaxed too which im not sure is a good thing with the Eng squad.

Hiddink would be a good choice. If he's available and interested then we should at least try to get him.

In the news today that Southgate will get it as caretaker manager until Arsène Wenger in available to get the job on a permanent basis. Paddy currently have him at 20/1. They would pay out on Southgate in a caretaker role if he is in charge for 10 or more games.

20/1 on Wenger is pretty tempting as I can't see England playing 10 games under Southgate before they appoint Wenger.

Thoughts?

Here's what's going to happen......

Southgate gets the job of holding manager whilst the FA decide which foreign manager should get the job. In the meantime, England win a couple of easy games under Southgate then........surprise surprise.........the FA give him the permanent job with a five year contract.

Yeah, unless they speak to a foreign coach in the relatively short term, then you're right, I cam see that happening... 2 year contract tho as opposed to five

that is exactly what i was thinking!

all this searching is bluster from the FA, they have already made their minds up but have to be seen to be doing the right thing!

Harry Redknapp made a great and funny point about Gareth Southgate as the next manager:

Quote:
“When it was suggested that Southgate knew the way the Football Association (FA) worked as well as the English "system", Redknapp responded: "Knows what system? The losing system? He knows the losing formula?”

And look at what has happened since the RFU appointed an experienced top class overseas coach!

I remember there was a bit of gnashing of teeth at the time of Jones being selected too..

He seems to speak his mind and not afraid to give the players a ticking off.

Would that work with some of our players who prefer a cuddle and praise which is why Capello failed (and they all loved Sven) ?

Southgate on an interim basis seems to be the call. If it actually is an interim position and not the trial period it seems, it's pointless as the England team's interim is to watch the tournament from various hotel bars. Two months should be plenty of time to leave the position vacant and hire an actual manager.

Talk about rewarding failure, he hasn't been too good in his last few jobs, no thanks to him.

Are the likes of Ray Wilkins, who wants an English manager, suggesting Glenn Hoddle, just trying to get on the gravy train and hope to be part of the coaching staff?

Hiring Hiddink wouldn't be rewarding failure, it'd be because of his history of doing well at international level. Name the contenders with a spotless record, by all means.

Of course he is. They are all doing it.

Harry suggested a manager, with HIMSELF as an assistant.

Rio ferdinand has also thrown his hat into the ring, alongside shearer.

Hoddle embarrasses himself as a commentator, Wilkins too "fella". These guys are all part of the old boys network, once in management (and all failures) and now stealing a living from tabloids and sky/ talksport.

Whenever a job comes up, its "harry, dave, big sam, pardew, sherwood, etc".

Even gary neville got himself in on the act.

Pundits are pundits for a reason, because they would NOT make good managers.

I almost admire Redknapp's lack of shame.

"Don't hire failures!"
"Don't hire inexperience!"
"Give it to Tim Sherwood and he'll give me a cushy job!"

It's so predictable isn't it.
