It's strange how Germany's player have got no problem with the pressure and expectations and they are world champions so there is even more pressure on them.
We are the biggest underachievers in world football. Not even a final appearance in any tournament for 5O years. This failure has become a massive mental thing for every England team, and now this new team seems to be as mebtally weak as all those who have gone before. |

While that's true even Shearer himself said on MOTD that the reason isn't due to pressure. He should know as an ex England player himself.
If a player like Rooney cannot even do the very basics of passing a ball 5 yards, that has to do with nerves and pressure completely taking over and destroying his confidence and touch. I am not being OTT when I say he looked like a 50 year old Sunday pub player. He really was that unbelievably bad |

Linaker on radio 5 live.
"we care too much and we get tense" "we lack mental strength. Mental strength comes from confidence and confidence comes from winning" |

Raheem Sterling has had sessions with a psychologist, that's just one we know of. Any idea of footballers being a single hivemind or that having money means they should be able to 'man up' is out of touch with reality.

The squad was unbalanced and lacked quality, though with a decent and tactically sound manager he still could of got a tune out of them.
I read a post on the Chelsea thread a while back with a poster saying Kane. Sterling and Lallana were world class. Laughable yes, but if he thinks it I wonder how many others do. Decent players but hugely overrated because they appear on the telly every week. Realistically, how many of our players would get in the top nations squads. They couldn't improve any. Roy has to take the majority of the blame but it wasn't him who was on the pitch. The players couldn't pass to each other, cross the ball, take corners etc..... He was too loyal to players, he had his favourites and that was it. Wilshire and Henderson were not match fit and should of been nowhere near the squad. You just know if we had got through then Hart would of kept his place. If that had been Chelsea I would of been gutted, it was England and I was laughing. That's where I am with the national team. You just know they are going to let you down. |

Gerrard, has basically admitted that he too (and no doubt the others of his generation) was mentally weak at this level.
He said that after the second goal went it, the players froze and instead of concentrating on how to get back into the game, they instantly they would have started thinking about how much they were going to be slaughtered in the media etc. Adding, he did it playing for England, and you can't stop it. Very honest of him to admit to that. So, we have a serious chicken & egg question with our players. They are mentally weak, because they lack confidence and confidence comes through winning. But, we can't win at this level, so how are we going to get the confidence and mental strength? Good luck to the next sucker on a hiding to nothing when taking on this poison chalice. |

It will be interesting to see how Germany do against their notorious bogey team. It's remarkable for all their success they've never beaten Italy in tournament football.
Germans are out for revenge and they have just found their form. De Rossi is injured and may be out. Individually, the Germans are better and Low is probably an even better tactician than Conte, Neuer and Boateng look impenetrable, but as I see it, Germany's biggest weakness is Hummels. That's Italy's (only) hope.

You feared for Italy from the start though and they've been ace. Join me and go full tifosi. Forza ragazzi, giallorossi, tutti frutti, Gino Ginelli!

I'm rooting Italy all the way, but if Germany do advance I make a few quid so it's can't lose. Ah, the relaxation of having no personal stake in the tournament any more.

It would be good for football if a team like Belgium won it.
Why would it be good for football to reward complete lack or organisation or game plan? Yes, they are individually very good players (although I can't stand Lukaku and don't rate him at all) but they have an awful manager and aren't really a unit at all |

I'm really anyone but Portugal at this point, but I like the idea of Belgium letting down the football hipsters so I'm not too keen on them doing it either.

I've still got De Bruyne alive in my golden boot selections, although it'll need one hell of a collapse by an opponent now. Mario Gomez is my only hope.

Remember this England team which everyone is writing off beat the, now everyone's favourite, Wales . Wales had a diastrous game against England . Even Coleman was singing the praises of the England team after the match, saying Wales came up against a better team .
What short memories all these fans have . I'm amazed England are able to produce such a good team when the English leagues are now nothing but a training ground for foreign players . I'm sick to death listening to the commentators saying of the foreign teams, oh such and such a player is playing for an English club . |
