It's the lack of self-belief. England seem to lose it at the group phase and second round. Some weird mental block. Sort of like a fit horse unable to jump over a hurdle or a good driver unable to do a three point turn.
I think the FA need to get some psychiatrists to study the minds of the players. See if they can get rid of the mental block that inhibits their performance. I dunno if it will work but it's worth a shot. A lot of success in sport is down to confidence and that is all in the mind. Venables and Redknapp may be chancers but they know how to organise and motivate teams and get that extra 10% performance. Someone like that is needed again (but not Venables or Redknapp of course). The list of recent England managers Eriksson Capello McClaren Hodgson Years of dull managers, either uninspiring or too rigid, who became too loyal to certain players. I think the FA has been trying to find another Alf Ramsey and mistakenly think that being bland is what made him a good manager. Exciting and unpredictable managers like Clough just don't fit the specification. Southgate is the ideal candidate to follow this list (as would Shearer). Which is why neither should get the job. If it must be an Englishman give the job to Big Sam. |

In Euro 2012, against Italy in the quarter final, England defended well so there was no lack of self belief from the players then. The problem was that they didn't have any attacking creativity offensively to create any scoring opportunities. |

In the group stages England looked comfortable for much of the time but our strikers let us down. However teams simply did not fear us with Wales playing on England fears. Sadly this defeat will hurt for a long time & a good gesture from the FA would be to seriously cut prices for the qualifiers if only a few games to get bums on seats. Also I would not blame Wales if they rubbed it in their next game. |

Whoever the new manager is they have a hell of a lot of work to do. Starting with actually coming up with a plan on what kind of system they are going to play and then going through the trial/error mode of who is going to be the best to play the type of style and tactics the new manager has in his mind.
Another thing which is essential I think is to pick players who are in form, not rely on players who perhaps have a lot of experience with England but have been absolutely crap during the PL season. And this goes for the captain too, no one should automatically think they're going to get a place in the England team due to a manager being loyal to them. To be honest, as long as the FA appoint someone who knows what they are doing and doesn't try to be too over complicated I am sure England will be fine. All they need is a system and to know who fits best into that system. Look at how Wales and Northern Ireland have done in this tournament, they've kept things very simple but have done well because each player in those teams knows what they are doing and know that they have a team around them that they are confident in. No one in the England team seemed to know what the hell plan b was last night, hell I don't even think there WAS a plan b in place in case things went awry. It was like everyone was waiting for someone to do or say something or to lead the charge but no one was prepared to step up. The only time it possibly looked like something could happen was when Rashford came on. |
