Tuesday 30th August - BBC WM 95.6

Richard Wilford presenting BBC WM 95.6 Sport from the Banks's Stadium

Devalued Trophy Group Stage
Chesterfield v Wolverhampton Wanderers Youth - Chris Coles
Millwall v West Bromwich Albion Youth - Rob Gurney
Walsall v Grimsby Town - Richard Wilford and Martin O'Connor (7.45pm commentary)

I'm not usually one to give teams/competitions names that I deem to be appropriate as Ian C and others do, but I'll make an exception here. What the Football League have done to what used to be a worthwhile tournament aimed at giving lower division clubs the opportunity to win a trophy at Wembley is an absolute disgrace.
Dale Moon and Mick Kearns are not just doing the Saddlers Player commentary on Walsall v Grimsby Town tonight, but are also being simulcast by Mariners Player in the absence of BBC Radio Humberside, who have decided not to cover the opening night of the devalued trophy.

Pulse 2 and the official Bradford City website
Chris Cooper* and Jason Thornton**

BBC Radio Leeds
Tim Steere and Wayne Jacobs

Notes

*Chris Cooper had a long and brilliant rant against the EFL Trophy, which included a long list of things that were wrong with the format.
**Jason Thornton was counting the Stoke City fans as they entered.
***BBC Radio Humberside haven't covered this trophy for a number of seasons.

You can hear Chris Cooper's rant about the EFL Trophy here.
Thanks for posting that - it's a brilliant and well constructed argument outlining some of the many reasons why the changes to the trophy are backwards and potentially dangerous to the future of the Football League. More power to Chris Cooper's elbow, hearing him made a stand is particularly helpful what with him being someone who is on friendly terms with Football League chief executive Shaun Harvey from his time at Bradford City.

Listening to the pre-match team news piece he did with Paul Franks on BBC WM's West Midlands Football Phone-In on Tuesday night, Richard Wilford admitted that WM were mulling over whether to cover the trophy this season given its changes and that interest in the competition will prove whether they have made the right decision or not.

It would be interesting to know how many BBC and commercial local radio stations that regularly cover clubs involved in the trophy decided against broadcasting their matches from the opening round of group games. I can't imagine too many BBC Local Radio stations who only serve teams that have entered youth teams into the competition would have been massively keen to break away from the networked Mark Forrest programme to cover their fixtures on Tuesday night given the antipathy towards it.

Tom Ross was a studio guest on Hawksbee & Jacobs yesterday, talking about his autobiography The Game's Gone and his career in radio. The chat can be heard here - http://talksport.com/radio/listen-again/1472644800# - click on the 13:30-14:00 tab, the interview starts at 19 minutes 20 seconds in and concludes about a minute into the 14:00-14:30 tab.

With him doing their Midlands transfer round-ups on transfer deadline day, Ian Danter popped up during the interview to talk to Tom about how he helped to launch his broadcasting career. It was good to hear Tom thank Kay Townsend - who Andy Jacobs mentioned as being the person who allocates games to their commentators and reporters - for inviting him to be a part of talkSPORT's reporting team when Free Radio 80s ended their live football coverage. Nice also to hear him talk about Help Harry Help Others, the charity which will receive the profits Tom's book makes. It was a very enjoyable listen, great to hear four of my favourite sports radio personalities on-air at the same time.

Wednesday 31st August - talkSPORT

Mark Saggers presented Kick Off: Transfer Deadline Day Special alongside Andrew Mills and Mark Langdon from the Racing Post, followed by The Sports Bar with Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy

Transfer Deadline Day Updates
London and the South - Ian Abrahams
Midlands - Ian Danter
North-East - Graham Courtney
North-West - Graham Beecroft

International Friendly
Republic of Ireland v Oman - David Brady

Tennis: US Open
Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York - Lisa O'Sullivan

Lisa has been updating the US Open for talkSPORT since Monday. Jon Norman has reported on both of this week's One-Day Internationals between England and Pakistan, the third ODI on Tuesday and the fourth ODI today. Tonight, Mark Wilson and Iestyn Harris are commentating on Wigan Warriors v Widnes Vikings in rugby league's Super League Super 8s for talkSPORT 2 from 8pm.

This Sunday, the talkSPORT stations have commentary on two 2018 World Cup qualifiers - coverage of Slovakia v England is on talkSPORT between 4-8pm with Ian Danter and Stuart Pearce, while Malta v Scotland commentary is on talkSPORT 2 between 7-10pm.

It would be interesting to know how many BBC and commercial local radio stations that regularly cover clubs involved in the trophy decided against broadcasting their matches from the opening round of group games.
BBC Tees were covering Middlesbrough's match.

BBC Radio Sheffield didn't cover their teams. They have provided commentary on their teams in the early stages of the competition in previous seasons.

Radio Leeds has a couple of considerations. Bradford City commentaries have returned to the station. If Radio Leeds didn't broadcast Bradford City's match, listeners may have tuned into Pulse 2.

Bradford City's match was on all offline platforms of BBC Radio Leeds. More important rugby league matches on Thursdays are usually not on FM, and Yorkshire's recent semi-final cricket matches were not on Radio Leeds. Radio Leeds considers being able to broadcast Bradford City's matches on all offline platforms more important, even matches from a trophy that attracts attendances of less than 2000.

Wednesday 31st August - RTE 2FM

Siobhan Madigan presented Game On from the Aviva Stadium alongside Pat Fenlon and Alan Cawley

International Friendly
Republic of Ireland v Oman - John Kenny and Brian Kerr (7.45pm commentary), with Tony O'Donoghue reporting

Newstalk 106-108FM

Ger Gilroy presented Off The Ball from the Aviva Stadium alongside Dion Fanning from SportsJOE.ie, Dan McDonnell from the Irish Independent (pre-match) and Keith Andrews (post-match) with Cian Murtagh in the studio

International Friendly
Republic of Ireland v Oman - Nathan Murphy and Stewie Byrne (7.45pm commentary)

So while there was no Three Dugout segment on Off The Ball as there usually is on Aviva Stadium-staged international evenings, Newstalk now appear to have non-exclusive commentary rights to Ireland's home friendlies. It will be interesting to find out if they have the same access to their World Cup qualifiers.

Today FM carried updates on Republic of Ireland v Oman from Philip Egan during John Duggan's sports bulletins.

Tom Rennie mentioned at the end of his The Weekend Starts Here show tonight that talkSPORT 2 will be covering the Serbia v Republic of Ireland World Cup qualifier on Monday night. Mark Wilson and Garry Schofield are commentating on St Helens v Hull FC in the Super League Super 8s for that station tonight. talkSPORT don't have a reporter on that game, but do have Simon Ward at Gloucester v Leicester Tigers in rugby union's Premiership and Lisa O'Sullivan covering the US Open tennis.

Saturday 3rd September - talkSPORT

Danny Kelly presenting Matchday Live

Rugby Union: Premiership
Saracens v Worcester Warriors - Russell Hargreaves and Andy Goode (2pm commentary), with Simon Ward reporting
Harlequins v Bristol - Nick Heath

Rugby League: Super League Super 8s
Catalans Dragons v Warrington Wolves - Mark Wilson and TBA (5pm commentary)

Bolton Wanderers v Southend United - Graham Beecroft
Millwall v Bradford City - Tony Incenzo

Luton Town v Wycombe Wanderers - Dave Rowe
Portsmouth v Crawley Town - Will Cope

Friendly
Arsenal Legends v Milan Glorie - Ian Abrahams

Tennis: US Open
Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York - Lisa O'Sullivan

talkSPORT 2

Ian Danter presenting Matchday Live 2

MotoGP: British Grand Prix Qualifying
Silverstone Circuit - Nick Harris and Steve Day, with Matthew Birt in the pitline (2.10pm commentary, as the TV international feed)

Rugby Union: Premiership
Saracens v Worcester Warriors - Nick Heath
Harlequins v Bristol - Russell Hargreaves and Andy Goode (4.30pm commentary), with Simon Ward reporting

Horse Racing: 32Red Sprint Cup Day
Haydock Park - Rob Hogarth

talkSPORT 2 are also carrying updates from the main station's football reporting team. Slightly strange set-up today; MotoGP qualifying was finished by 3pm, meaning there is full Around the Grounds coverage of the first half of today's 3pm football on talkSPORT 2 with Ian Danter before coverage of the second half of the Twickenham double header in the rugby union Premiership begins on there. So, from 4pm Danny Kelly will be picking up the reigns for second half Around the Grounds on talkSPORT.

Good to hear that they have everything covered across the two stations, but I have to wonder whether it would have made more sense to have both rugby union commentaries on one station and the football Around the Grounds plus this evening's rugby league on the other station.

The talkSPORT stations' commentary teams on this weekend's 2018 World Cup qualifiers will be Jim Proudfoot and Stuart Pearce on Slovakia v England, Dan Windle and Chris Iwelumo on Malta v Scotland and John Anderson and Adam Virgo on Serbia v Republic of Ireland.

BBC Radio Wales

Newport County A-A Barnet - Rob Phillips and Nathan Blake (SE Wales FM & DAB first half commentary)
Maidstone United v Wrexham - Simon Davies and Iwan Roberts (N Wales FM / NE & NW Wales DAB / Online)
Bangor City v Aberystwyth Town - Marc Lloyd Williams
Scarlets v Munster (Guiness Pro12) - Ian Hunt (host) Phil Steele and Adrian Hadley (Swansea area FM & DAB / SW Wales FM & DAB / M Wales FM / MW / Digital TV / Online)
Bridgend v RGC1404 (Principality Premiership) - Alun Jenkins

With the Newport County game being abandoned during half time, SE Wales FM & DAB joined the Scarlets game. Wouldn't class the rugby as an uninterrupted commentary as they would still do an 'around the grounds' style show during the first half of that also.

BBC Radio Cymru

Newport County A-A Barnet - Gareth Blainey
Maidstone United v Wrexham - Owain Llyr
Bangor City v Aberystwyth Town - Marc Lloyd Williams
Scarlets v Munster (Guiness Pro12) - Rhodri Llewellyn (host) Alun Wyn Bevan and Brynmor Williams (nationwide commentary on all frequencies)
Bridgend v RGC1404 (Principality Premiership) - Alun Jenkins
Rio2016 Paralympics preview - Steffan Hughes

Did like Rhodri saying that the Ibiza season doesn't feel like it's over, with the choice of music the PA was playing at Parc y sgarlets to keep the crowd 'upbeat'.

BBC Bristol / Somerset

Geoff Twentyman (studio host)

Yeovil Town v Blackpool - Chris Spittles and Alex o'Loughlin (95.5FM)
Northampton Saints v Bath (Aviva Premiership) (1530BST) - Ed Hadwin and Max Lahiff (104.6FM / Online / Bristol & Bath DAB / Somerset DAB)
Harlequins v Bristol (Aviva Premiership) (1630BST) - Damian Derrick and Mark Hoskins (94.9FM / Online)

It was an 'everywhow except 95.5FM' job for the first half of Northampton v Bath. I've no idea what 1566MW or Freeview did.

BFBS Radio

Saracens v Worcester Warriors & Harlequins v Bristol (Aviva Premiership) - Nick Heath

talkSPORT's commentators on Catalans Dragons v Warrington Wolves was Mark Wilson and Andrew Henderson.

Also, it turns out the main station didn't carry updates from Talking Rugby's Nick Heath on the second game of the Twickenham double header in the rugby union Premiership, as talkSPORT 2 did for the first game of the day.

Ian Dennis, John Murray and Terry Butcher are commentating on Slovakia v absolutely terrible on 5Live.
its a really small thing that anoys me more than it should, but why can't Dennis say a phone number correctly? 0500 909 and 693! he's the only person I've ever heard put an and in the middle of a phone number and its weird. apart from that, 5Live are doing a good job with a shocking game.

Sunday 4th September - talkSPORT

Ian Danter presented Matchday Live: International Special and The Full Time Phone-In with Stuart Pearce, followed by The Press Pass with Ray Stubbs, Tom Hopkinson and Tom Collomosse

FIFA World Cup 2018 European Qualifying Group F
Slovakia v England - Jim Proudfoot and Stuart Pearce (5pm commentary)
Malta v Scotland - Nigel Pearson

Cricket: Fifth One-Day International
England v Pakistan - Guy Swindells

Formula 1: Italian Grand Prix
Autodromo Nazionale Monza - Graham Beecroft

Tennis: US Open
Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York - Lisa O'Sullivan

talkSPORT 2

Dan Windle presented International Football Live

FIFA World Cup 2018 European Qualifying Group F
Malta v Scotland - Dan Windle and Chris Iwelumo (7.45pm commentary)

Earlier...

MotoGP Live - no live presentation, just pre-recorded break bumpers from Will Gavin

MotoGP: British Grand Prix
Silverstone Circuit - Nick Harris, Steve Day and Matthew Birt, with Dylan Gray in the pitline (commentary on the Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP races, as the TV international feed)

This is the correct MotoGP commentary team that talkSPORT 2 have been using, as opposed to the one I posted for Saturday's qualifying. No live presentation meant I finally caught a proper namecheck of the whole team.

I'm probably on my own with this one but Saturday's 606 was Robbie Savage & John Hartson (no "presenter") and it was a really good show. Particularly as they had a number of non-league callers on given it was non-league day which was good to hear.

Did 5 Live have anyone at the Malta v Scotland or Czech(ia) Republic v Norn Iron last night? I tried to see if they crossed over when a goal was scored but there was a 'best of 5 Live' show on.

Might be like what they did with the Andorra v Wales opening game for the Euro2016 qualifiers and just said "it's on Radio Wales".

Their quiz to selected callers was captivating eg "Who had control of the remote control, Big John or me?" and other similar q's relating to their time spent rooming together on away trips.

If this was the case, then I'm sorry but that is a really poor showing on Radio 5 Live's part. It should be the bare minimum expectation for 5 Live to have someone covering every competitive game that Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales play (you can broaden this out to Scottish club sides in Europe as well) - even if that's just a reporter who's working off-tube and is only called upon during news bulletins. While not ideal, this would be far, far better than coverage being limited to a few scorechecks from presenters or newsreaders as is too often the case.
