Interesting bit of news regarding Today FM in the Republic of Ireland. Tomorrow, they are doing their first double header of commentaries this season. With their regular commentary team of Ron Jones and Brian Kerr set to cover the Manchester derby, Ian Darke and Andy Reid will commentate on Arsenal v Southampton for them from 3pm.

This is notable because Darke is one of BT Sport's main football commentators, however in recent months his status there seems to have dropped from being a joint number one with Darren Fletcher to very much their number two voice on English football behind him. So it's interesting to see that he's going down the radio route on this occasion. I'd be interested to know when Darke last did a radio football commentary? While he started his career in radio with BBC Radio Sport, he's not done much on the wireless to my knowledge since he moved into TV during the early 1990s. I know Darke did commentary on a boxing bill headlined by Billy Joe Saunders v Chris Eubank Jr and Tyson Fury v Dereck Chisora for talkSPORT in November 2014, but aside than that I'm not aware of him doing any other radio commentary work this decade.

Today FM are no stranger to drafting in notable commentators - they called upon the late, great Tony Gubba during the three seasons when the BBC lost Premier League highlights rights to ITV in the early 2000s. They then brought in Ron Jones from Radio 5 Live upon the return of Match of the Day, with him being their mainstay commentator ever since.

A few talkSPORT 2 details ahead of the weekend. talkSPORT 2's Premier League commentators continue to match the geography of the game - after Chris Cooper called their debut match from Middlesbrough and Alex Crook did their last two from London, Saturday will see Simon Humphreys commentating on Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur. Humphreys is local to Stoke and has commentated on the Potters for the Signal stations, where he is news editor. Ian Danter will be back in the chair for Matchday Live 2 at the Bet365 Stadium, having covered for Adrian Durham on the main Matchday Live a fortnight ago. I'm not sure who the co-commentator will be.

talkSPORT 2 have also got a couple of La Liga games in the 7-10pm timeslot on Saturday and Sunday, both kicking off at 7.30pm. They'll be covering Barcelona v Alaves on Saturday and Deportivo La Coruna v Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. This appears to be the regular timeslots for their La Liga coverage, since the start of the Spanish league season they've covered games kicking off after 7pm on all bar the opening Saturday when they were covering the T20 Blast Final. I think this scheduling makes sense, as typically at least one if not both of Barcelona and Real Madrid play at weekends after 7pm. Obviously they can't cover Saturday games kicking off before then due to their Premier League coverage (I'm sure they'll also be covering the Super League Play-Offs after 5pm on Saturdays over the next month), while last season's coverage of the 11am/12noon Sunday kick-offs seems to have been superseded by their live MotoGP coverage.

Friday 9th September - talkSPORT

Matt Holland presenting Kick Off: The Player's Lounge alongside Danny Gabbidon

Championship
Reading v Ipswich Town - Ian Abrahams

Rugby Union: Premiership
Worcester Warriors v Gloucester - Russell Hargreaves

Tennis: US Open
Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York - Lisa O'Sullivan

As far as I heard, talkSPORT didn't have a reporter at the England Under-21s international earlier in the week.

talkSPORT 2

Mark Wilson presenting Super League Live from the KCOM Stadium

Rugby League: Super League Super 8s
Hull FC v Wigan Warriors - Mark Wilson and Michael Shenton (8pm commentary)

talkSPORT Live and Bundesliga English

Bundesliga
Schalke 04 v Bayern Munchen - Kevin Hatchard

BBC Radio Berkshire

Ady Williams presenting Sport on BBC Radio Berkshire from the Madejski Stadium

Championship
Reading v Ipswich Town - Tim Dellor and Mick Gooding (8pm commentary, also on Reading FC Player)

BBC Radio Suffolk

Graeme Mac presenting BBC Radio Suffolk Sport: Matchnight from the studio

Championship
Reading v Ipswich Town - Brenner Woolley and Mick Mills (8pm commentary, also on Ipswich Player)

Reading v Ipswich was the Friday night Championship game this time last year (11th September). Both Radio Berkshire and Radio Suffolk called upon the same teams that they are utilising tonight. This happened last month with Brighton v Forest taking place on the Friday of the same weekend the same fixture took place last year.

Both the 5 Live commentaries page and schedule list Watford v Man Utd as a commentary next Sunday (18th), it's a 12:00 kick off so in talkSPORTs usual slot so any guesses as to why that might be the case?

This weekends 5 Live commentaries (per Phil Wye)

Man U v Man C - John Murray & Chris Waddle
Arsenal v Southampton - Ian Dennis & Clive Allen
Aston V v Nott Forest - Ian Brown & Steve Claridge
Swansea v Chelsea - Conor McNamara & John Hartson
Sunderland v Everton - Ian Dennis & Ally McCoist

I'm guessing it's one of those games that was originally scheduled to be in one of the TV timeslots that Radio 5 Live hold national radio rights to, only for it to be moved to a different slot due to Manchester United's involvement in the UEFA Europa League. Although as Manchester United didn't have to qualify for the Europa League, surely Sky Sports will have known they wouldn't be able to pencil them into a Friday or Saturday timeslot next weekend? Maybe it would otherwise have been a Saturday 3pm game, but going by history those games being moved it doesn't necessarily follow that this will have an impact on which national radio station can cover it, although 5 Live have covered some such games in the past.

In any case, it doesn't appear to be a change in the allocation of the pre-3pm Sunday radio rights generally - going by the talkSPORT.com commentaries schedule page (which doesn't list Watford v Manchester United), there's another 12noon-2.15pm double header on Sunday 2nd October, Manchester United v Stoke City followed by Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City, with both of those matches due to be live on talkSPORT.

I wonder if this is a link up for club player commentary thus they have a lot of leeway on the coverage?

There has been no mention on Radio Humberside's Twittter of the club website commentary being switched. However, this is a partnership between Viking and the club, and commentary rights are just a part of that partnership.

I'd go as far as asking if Ian Darke has ever commentated on a football match on the radio before. A search on BBC Genome provides plenty of records of him commentating on boxing and athletics, and of presenting big games from the grounds (he was the main presenter of Sport on 2 for several years), but no football commentary. This is not conclusive, as BBC Genome is based on Radio Times which stopped routinely listing football commentators for Saturday games in Sport on 2 in the mid-seventies (and records for Sport on 2 for much of the 80s are absent). But I listened to plenty of football on BBC Radio during his era and have no memory of him commentating (as opposed to reporting and presenting) on football. It was a bit of a surprise when he went to SKY as a football commentator.

Ian Darke has done boxing for talkSPORT before but he's done at least one football match for them in the past too. I remember him in the early years doing an FA Cup match for them.
