a few times this season, I've heard 5Live refer to at least 144 commentaries. wonder if this is to take in to account the extra games they are picking up because of talksport's quotas? I agree its pretty confusing for the listeners and I hope something is done to make things clearer in future deals.

Yeah i agree saying "at least" tends to leave seeds of confusion yes they are right to plug how many games they are covering but they should clarify why they say "at least"

In previous seasons they must have auctioned the radio rights in a slightly different way, almost entirely by time slot, whereas the current three year deal has greater alignment with the TV packages. Prior to this radio rights deal, any PL game that kicked off at 5:30 on a Saturday or before 3:00 on a Sunday was definitely on TS, along with any midweek games on a Wednesday or Friday, regardless of the TV broadcaster or the package the game came from.

I would imagine 5L have rights aligned to the other five TV packages, and then you would have another two packages exclusively for radio - first choice of Saturday 3pm games (which 5L have) and second pick of games (which TS2 have and prior to them Absolute Radio had).

I would imagine the first package would go beyond just first pick of 3pms on Saturdays and include games not selected for TV coverage and played on a Sunday, moved because of European football and not being covered by TS, and rearranged matches towards the end of the season when FA Cup involvement etc leads to fixture postponements. Quite often in the final few weeks of the season you'll have several Tuesday/Wednesdays of rearranged matches - it would be impossible for 5L to know how many of those there will be, so it makes sense that they say "at least 144" because that is the bare minimum before rearranged games come into it. My guess would be all these games above and beyond 144 come from their Saturday 3pm radio package, which probably doesn't have a specific number of live fixtures stated as it's impossible to know in advance.

Interesting analysis on the vagaries of the Premier League national radio rights situation.

A couple of things I'd like to highlight - firstly talkSPORT's Saturday 5.30pm and Sunday pre-3pm packages have only been reduced by four games each from the previous two contracts. If you bear in mind that they have lost around four Wednesday night games due to the reallocation of those matches from the former package, only about four matches from their weekend timeslots should be affected. With them losing a 5.30pm Saturday game a few weeks ago and the one that will take place this weekend, plus last Sunday's 1.30pm kick-off, could almost all of the weekend games removed from their packages and added to 5 Live's ones have been accounted for already?

King Betty's suggestion that it may all come down to TV pick order and the apathetical categorisation of fixtures seems to follow logically, but in practice it might not always be sensible to make Radio 5 Live and talkSPORT take games from outside of their usual timeslots due to factors beyond their control. For example, if a Saturday 5.30pm match comes from TV package F or G on a Saturday in March when it's England v Wales in the Six Nations after 5pm, it makes no sense to give the BBC a clash of commitments like that, which would probably see the football go out on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra than on either analogue station. That's not to say the BBC should lose a game, but perhaps you could apply a degree of common sense and allow them to take a match of similar quality from another weekend with no such clashes. So hopefully there's a sensible level of autonomy to avoid situations like that.

On the reference to Radio 5 Live having "at least" 144 commentaries, could that just simply be alluding to how there may be more than 28/32 matches in some of the timeslots they hold rights to over the course of the season, and so it's quite possible they may creep over their named quota by the end of the campaign. Over the years talkSPORT have quite regularly broadcast slightly more than 64 Premier League commentaries per season, only by one or two games most years, with this occurring as there are more than 32 matches taking place in the timeslots they are entitled to cover. So this disclaimer could simply be referring to that sort of thing happening quite naturally.

With them not having commentary on the Saturday 5.30pm game this weekend, Sam Matterface and Stuart Pearce will be talkSPORT 2's commentary team on Manchester United v Burnley at 3pm. On Sunday, Jim Proudfoot and Ray Houghton - who increasingly appear to be the regular Sunday Exclusive commentary pairing - will call Everton v West Ham United on talkSPORT.

talkSPORT will be doing commentary on three European games in midweek; Ludogorets Razgrad v Arsenal on Tuesday, Kobenhavn v Leicester City on Wednesday and Fenerbahce v Manchester United on Thursday; all three to go out on their primary station with Danny Kelly listed to present the coverage.

DD will probably be Dave Donaldson at Aberdeen. The only CL I can think of is Charles Lambert but I don't think he has reported for some time. I suspect you are right with Gigi Salmon.

Saturday 29th October - talkSPORT 2

Dan Windle presented La Liga Live alongside Alvaro Romero

La Liga
Atletico Madrid v Malaga - Will Gavin and Clive Walker (5.30pm commentary)
Barcelona v Granada - Adam Bridge and Matt Lawrence (7.45pm commentary)

Alvaro Romero, who is talkSPORT Live's Spanish language editor, joined Dan between the commentaries to discuss the weekend action in La Liga generally. I'm guessing the coverage must have started after Matchday Live 2 at around 5.15pm, given that Dan was commentating on a game for talkSPORT Live.

A couple of things I missed from the details I posted yesterday...

Originally Posted by The Difference:

Dan Wheeler and Matt Lawrence were talkSPORT Live's commentary team on Crystal Palace v Liverpool.

Mike Taylor was actually with Mel Eves for BBC WM's commentary on Blackburn v Wolves. Mel then co-hosted the post-match phone-in with Daz Hale, who presented from 5.15pm.

I'll post yesterday's Irish national radio details, including the IRN reporters Ian F has requested, as well as today's talkSPORT and BBC WM details a little later on.

Interesting as Matthew Raisbeck is usually the stand in commentator. Paul Dixon covered Gateshead v Wrexham and Barry HIndson was at Morpeth Town v Newton Aycliffe.

I didn't hear any of the commentary yesterday but I am pleased to hear Simon Pryde did it, he is a good commentator and I would like to hear him commentating more often.

As for Mick Lowes, I thought it was health reasons as to why he misses matches fairly regularly?
