As Westy2 mentioned over the page, BBC WM split their platforms to provide separate Blues and Villa-slanted commentaries on the Second City Derby, as they did for Aston Villa v Wolves a few weeks ago. Once again, the Villa-based service took priority on 95.6FM, with both DAB platforms getting the Blues one. Not sure which commentary went out on Freeview channel 722. Paul Franks presented joint build-up, half-time and post-match segments as coverage ran from 11am-3pm following a special breakfast show with Daz Hale, Ian Clarkson and Dennis Mortimer between 9-11am.

One notable absentee was Mark Regan, who is WM's designated Villa commentator. I know it's the half-term holidays, so he might still be away with his family, but nevertheless it's a surprise he'd miss a derby. I wonder if he was providing a separate commentary for the Aston Villa official website or if they took WM's one?

I thought it was Blues on 95.6 (as it was coming from St Andrews) & Villa on Dab, but I could be wrong.

No, going by Twitter (and I'm pretty sure Paul Franks mentioned this on-air during the build-up too), the Villa-slanted service was on FM while the Blues-based one was on DAB.

When questioned on this, the follow-up tweet from the WM Sport account states that it will be "the other way round for the game at Villa Park" - but then when Aston Villa hosted Wolves at Villa Park, the Villa service was on FM and the Wolves one was on DAB. I'm sure RadioPhoenix will be along to slate WM for this, and I don't blame him. Unless they put Blues on FM for the derby at Villa Park AND Wolves on FM for the derby at Molineux, he has every right to do so. After two of the four derbies involving Aston Villa, it does appear as if they are prioritising the Villa supporting section of their audience.

As for what they did on Freeview, on the face of it you'd assume they'd put the DAB service on channel 722 - as this is what they usually do when there is a two-way FM/DAB split. But the chap who replied to the tweet I have linked to confirms that the Villa-slanted service went out on Freeview. Going by the very end of the iPlayer upload of WM's build-up, this would appear to be the case, as after they had handed over to commentary on there they went to Mike Taylor and Garry Thompson. I've always assumed the online platform (even though it cuts out on kick-off) is a mirror of Freeview - typically on Saturdays at 3pm when everyone is playing you get the DAB in Wolverhampton output, which I think usually airs on TV as well, during the minute or two before the disclaimer kicks in.

I've cribbed the Off The Ball details from their Twitter account, seeing as Newstalk Listen Back hasn't uploaded anything since the early hours of yesterday. Going by that, Stephen Ward was originally going to be with McIntyre at Goodison Park (Damian Lynch is a former Leeds youngster who spent most of his career in the League of Ireland, which suggests he was a late replacement for a better known name), while Bernard O'Toole and Alan McLoughlin are listed as their planned team at St Mary's. I have no idea what happened there, with them taking commentary from a team who I believe do more Irish TV work than radio.

WM really aren't very good at this derby lark, for Blues v Wolves it ended up being a completely Blues commentary (I know Diff I know) hosted by the Blues reporter. For Villa v Wolves they split it but put the wrong comms on the main channel and it was hosted by the Villa reporter. Then for Blues v Villa they finally bring in the main host but they have to use the Wolves reporter to do the Villa comms and confuse their policy on FM/DAB split.

All in all the licence fee being well spent

We've had the discussion about the Birmingham v Wolves derby before - I think you can put that one down to a case of bad fortune, what with their planned Wolves analyst dropping out late on. I struggle to believe that Richard Wilford would not be fair to any one of the region's five league clubs, given that he's been covering them for WM for 20 odds years, and I think it stands to reason that their nominal Birmingham voice would cover the derby at St Andrew's with their nominal Wolves voice in Mike Taylor doing the one at Molineux (that's presuming they don't split the frequencies - if they are in a position to do so with no clashes - for the return fixture). So I think it's only fair to seperate their coverage of that match from the other two.

However, I'm with you on the two Villa derbies. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with the Wolves game, given that it was the first time they'd covered a match in that way and someone had to be on DAB - unusual as it was for the club that is playing at home to be favoured on FM ahead of the away team as is conventionally the case. But will the Villa-slanted service being on FM for both a derby they played at Villa Park and then for a derby where they were the away side, well you have to say that has all the hallmarks of them prioritising the Villa supporting section of their audience, which I presume would be the largest part of it. I'll be interested to see how they handle any future derbies in the New Year.

Does it matter really? I get fewer people have DAB access but Villa have more fans (or appear to) than the other teams and are seen as the "bigger club" in the area so it's understandable.

If Radio Manchester prioritised the two Manchester clubs over Bolton I wouldn't complain. Even if it was Wigan in a higher division I'd understand.

5Live have added Wolves vs Derby to their schedule this Saturday lunchtime with Man City vs ' Boro at 3pm in the PL.

One big disappointment is on Sunday, there's no FA Cup 1st round commentary at 2pm, there's no other live sport blocking it and they did 1st/2nd round last year. They may have decided to go around the grounds like Final Score instead, it may be cheaper I suppose. Bear in mind they only have 2 PL commentaries this weekend too so no football resources are being particularly stretched.

It doesn't overly bother me, but I can see why it might annoy some - the Birmingham supporter who raised this to WM on Twitter didn't have DAB access, yet couldn't access the Blues-based coverage through Freeview either. As a fan of the "smallest" league club in the area I can sympathise to a degree with Birmingham or Wolves fans who think they are playing second fiddle to Villa here, given how they have been prioritised on FM seemingly regardless of the venue.

You can say this call is understandable because there are probably more Villa fans than supporters of their rivals, but should a public service broadcaster always look to put the wants of the largest section of their audience above all others sections of it? I'm not sure that this should always be the case - a bit of even handedness would be better, whether that's the home team always being on FM, the away side always being on FM, having a co-commentator representing each side or having one who has a foot in both camps. In its day, BRMB/Free Radio 80s' football coverage didn't routinely prioritise Villa ahead of Birmingham, West Brom or Wolves, so I don't see why WM should now that they have no longer have any local competition.

A number of UTV Radio's local stations that provide football coverage are now tagging it under the Matchday Live banner (I know Pulse also does this), mirroring that of the Saturday output on their flagship talkSPORT stations. I believe this Adam Dury - who was sitting in for Signal's regular host Jonty Sargeant - is the same chap who has started covering matches for IRN this season, while Nick Walsh is the Yorkshire-based reporter who has been heard on talkSPORT a few times this season.

Having dipped into Signal's coverage tonight and Tower FM last week, plus bits of other UTV Radio local sports broadcasts in the past, it's amazing to hear how basic Swansea Sound's coverage is compared to the rest of them. You had a solo commentator in Adam Fielder (who is pretty good, no complaints about him) covering a Premier League game with no build-up and post-game offering. Coverage tonight went out during a country music show hosted by someone called Steve (didn't catch his surname) - even at half-time they went back to the music! I know that Peak FM has a solo commentator in Pete Farries on their Chesterfield coverage, but at least they provide proper match build-up and post-match analysis rather than just the 90 minutes and nothing more.

Mark this day down Diff, i'm agreeing with you. It is not that difficult to be fair to all of the teams in the region, others have done it quite comfortably.

Plus it's a dangerous debate to start trying to rank the midlands clubs, there are arguments all round for the big 4 (sorry Diff)

I thought that was the case. I prefer Raizer as a commentator mind. He does an excellent job as Gateshead commentator on the occasions they cover them them. You can tell the club means a lot to him, and it's nice to see him post on the 'Heed Army' fans forum now and them. Always does a good job covering Newcastle in Mick's absence too.
