Nice to hear both of these games covered by talkSPORT after the station didn't have a reporter at either of last weekend's internationals involving Wales and Ireland.

I enjoyed yesterday's edition of Matchday Live, their League One and Two Around the Grounds shows on international Saturdays are always good listens, with Danny Kelly's enthusiasm for lower league football more than making up for the gaps in his knowledge in comparison to the likes of Adrian Durham, Ian Danter and Geoff Peters.

Regarding the latter, Geoff was joined by Clive Allen for The Full Time Phone-In on talkSPORT 2 - with the lower league coverage switching stations pretty much on the stroke of 5pm when their commentary of Austria v Republic of Ireland was joined after the anthems - it meant we didn't get all of the full time reports from their featured games, although Nigel Adderley did give a check of the classified scores from the two league divisions as soon as a break in play allowed him to. So their coverage was not perfect, but they were really handicapped by the 5pm sharp kick-off time and I felt they juggled the two commitments as well as they could in the circumstances.


talkSPORT's deal with The FA doesn't include commentary rights to England's home World Cup or European Championship qualifiers; just the FA Cup, Community Shield and all England friendly internationals. They pick up commentary rights to away qualifiers involving the home nations like the game last night separately.

I'm sure this has come up on this thread a number of times before, but you always seem to ask the same kind of questions when it comes to talkSPORT not having rights to certain matches. It's almost as if you pay scant attention to anyone's else posts and/or are trying to draw attention to gaps in their coverage.

talkSPORT will be doing commentary on England v Spain on Tuesday night - Mark Saggers will present from Wembley Stadium, with Jim Proudfoot and Stuart Pearce commentating.

talkSPORT 2's live commentary game next Saturday is Crystal Palace v Manchester City. I imagine this will be commentated on by talkSPORT's usual Saturday teatime duo of Sam Matterface and Stuart Pearce, given that the day's 5.30pm Premier League game - Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United - is another one of those matches that will turn up on 5 Live due to the vagaries of the new rights deal.

With their Full Time Phone-In shifting forward two and a half hours due to there being no 5.30pm commentary on talkSPORT next Saturday, leaving a gap in their evening schedule, I wonder if they might consider putting commentary on the Madrid derby onto the main talkSPORT in the vacant timeslot? Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid is a 7.45pm kick-off that night. Usually they would put their live La Liga coverage on talkSPORT 2, but that station is covering the ATP World Tour Finals tennis from the O2 Arena all this week and matches are set to take place on Saturday evening. So to me it would make sense to retain coverage of the business end of the tennis tournament on talkSPORT 2 and move the Madrid derby onto talkSPORT given the gap in the schedule. Currently, a repeat of the Gary Neville documentary Guillem Balague did for them a little while ago is listed for 8-10pm next Saturday, but I'm sure that and the final hour of a longer-than-usual three-hour phone-in can easily be bumped.

Alternatively, with there also being no Sunday afternoon pre-4pm Premier League fixture next weekend, they may see the possibility of moving the Saturday evening session and next Sunday's finals from the ATP World Tour Finals onto talkSPORT, thus allowing talkSPORT 2 to keep its usual weekend schedule - not just live La Liga but also live Premiership rugby union and their weekly rugby and cricket magazine shows.

Very sad news that the legendary Mick Lowes is retiring. I really do hope that he will be the regular stand in for Total Sport that would be great news.

I agree I don't think Raser is ready but its an interesting scenario to replace a local radio commentator mid season. I've not really listened to Justin much before.

I don't think it would be popular but they could move Nick Barnes back to Newcastle and then have Martin Emmerson back as Sunderland commentator.

Thanks for sharing this. I used to listen to Praise or Grumble more regularly than I do now. I agree with Robert Jackson about how the character of the programme has changed and not for the better.

Paul Walkerr spoke about this a few years ago and I think he argued that the growth in information and analysis had added intelligence to football discussion. I think that has come at the expense of the sort of humour Robert Jackson was describing.

35 calls in 30 minutes is an amazing statistic. I wonder why Doncaster always had fewer callers. Were attendances much lower there than at Rotherham or Chesterfield 30 years ago?

5Live had 3 606s scheduled this weekend but Sunday's was cancelled because of F1. Friday was Jason & Robbie, Saturday was Phil Williams & Robbie with Sunday the usual Kelly & Ian had it gone ahead.

For me, Jason hasn't clicked on 606, it just doesn't flow as well and it worked better with Phil IMO.

5Live's schedule also shows Forest/Newcastle commentary on Friday 2nd December. It's unusual for 5Live to do a Friday night game, obviously 2 big teams in the division but even so, other games of similar stature haven't been commentated on.

Darren Fletcher is 5Live's Friday night presenter and is Nottingham based (and 606 seemed to indicate a Forest fan) & with Jermaine Jenas his co-presenter being a former Forest & Newcastle player, I think it's a one off. I'd like it to be a shift in policy though but doubt it is.
