And the wider point is a fair one. Do Radio 5 Live football discussion programmes like The Monday Night Club deserve to fail when they have Sun journalists on as guests? I'd be interested to know Col's thoughts on that one.
Personally, in terms of their links to The Sun, I think it is only right to take an even-handed approach and view talkSPORT in the same way you would other News Corp subsidiaries like Sky Sports, Sky News and The Times. Interesting timing for Sam Matterface to start writing a new column in the Daily Mirror - thanks to Tony for drawing attention to it. talkSPORT's growing links to the two News Corp newspapers do not appear to have diminished the amount of airtime sports journalists from the Mirror and other competing newspapers receive on the station as far as I've heard, with the likes of John Cross and Darren Lewis being station regulars. I do not think this will change, just as Sky Bet's strong links with talkSPORT 2 since its launch in the spring have not prevented other bookmakers from advertising on the main station. I won't watch Sunday Supplement either on Sky as Neil Ashton hosts this. Sky are owned by the same people as The Sun, I accept that but they don't have many on air links to them which TS might do. In an ideal world, I'd consume nothing to do with the Murdoch's, virtually impossible in Australia! I want to watch certain things whereever I live & I always used Virgin/alternatives where I could (I know they give money to Sky) but that isn't always possible. There is a choice of not listening to TS and still being able to consume what I want where as with Sky, there isn't/wasn't (e.g. certain live PL games and when I subscribed, the CL too). My initial post was a bit strong, if I was a TS regular, I'd be disappointed with this takeover etc & I would genuinely stop listening. That's how strongly I feel. I can only do my bit & hope one day, The Sun goes the same way as NOTW did, I live in hope. I'll also carry on complaining when the BBC use Sun employees. |

Wednesday 14th December - talkSPORT
Mark Saggers presented Kick Off from the Stadium of Light with Stuart Pearce at White Hart Lane Premier League Crystal Palace v Manchester United - Alex Crook Manchester City v Watford - Dom McGuinness Middlesbrough v Liverpool - Simon Humphreys Stoke City v Southampton - Geoff Peters Sunderland v Chelsea - Graham Courtney and Mark Saggers, with James Dodd producing Tottenham Hotspur v Hull City - Olly Wilson and Stuart Pearce West Bromwich Albion v Swansea City - Nigel Pearson West Ham United v Burnley - Ian Abrahams Championship Nottingham Forest v Preston North End - Naz Premji Queens Park Rangers v Derby County - Tony Incenzo Wigan Athletic v Newcastle United - Graham Beecroft James Dodd also produced Tuesday night's Kick Off from Goodison Park. There was a nice moment during the early team news segment just after 7pm, as once Graham Courtney had given the teams from Sunderland, they paused from heading around the grounds so that he and Mark Saggers could describe Bradley Lowery's penalty kicks with Asmir Begovic during the warm-up (Bradley being the terminally ill boy who I'm sure many of you will have heard about). I thought this was a nice moment and something they were quite right to highlight. talkSPORT Live Premier League Crystal Palace v Manchester United - Richard Connelly and Alan McLoughlin (featured 8pm commentary on international radio stations) Manchester City v Watford - Callum Williams Middlesbrough v Liverpool - Toby Gilles Stoke City v Southampton - Barry Swain Sunderland v Chelsea - Dan Windle Tottenham Hotspur v Hull City - James Fielden West Bromwich Albion v Swansea City - Jon Norman West Ham United v Burnley - Will Gavin BBC WM 95.6 Richard Wilford presented BBC WM 95.6 Sport from the Hawthorns Premier League West Bromwich Albion v Swansea City - Rob Gurney and Tony Brown (8pm commentary) |
