One thing to point out is that Jim Proudfoot will be at the BDO World Darts Championship this year commentating for C4/BT so his talkSPORT commentaries at the start of January will be very much in the low single figures. I suppose Nigel Adderley will be doing a lot more commentaries then.
This is what I have written in the Sports Commentators thread in the Broadcasting section... With Ray Stubbs and George Riley not working the Lakeside possibly due to their other commitments, I'm surprised to hear that Jim Proudfoot will be part of the commentary team. As talkSPORT's lead football commentator, he has a tonne of potential matches to cover between January 7th and 15th - the talkSPORT stations will be covering seven or eight matches during FA Cup Third Round weekend, they then have both League Cup semi-final first leg ties that midweek (usually he and Sam Matterface would get a semi-final each) and as the station's regular Sunday 1.30pm commentator, you'd expect him to be covering Everton v Manchester City on January 15th. Additionally, he's likely to be commentating for the Premier League's television international feed on whichever game Sky Sports pick as their 3pm game in the Republic of Ireland on Saturday 14th. So either Jim will be greatly scaling back his football commitments during one of the busiest weeks of the season (which he hasn't in previous years, he would miss semi-final Saturday in the days when his only regular football gig was as Absolute Radio's Saturday 3pm Premier League commentator) or he'll be a bit-part player at the Lakeside. ... Subsequently, I've had a look back over the 2014/15 edition of this thread to see how much he did for talkSPORT during the 2015 BDO World Darts Championship - which is the only one he's covered since rejoining the station, he missed the 2016 tournament entirely - to find that he didn't head to the Lakeside before the Tuesday, having hosted Call Collymore on the Saturday and had Sunday and Monday commentary matches during FA Cup Third Round weekend. However, that year the first legs of the League Cup Semi-Finals didn't take place in midweek as they do this year and he wasn't involved in talkSPORT's Premier League coverage as he is now (I'm unsure whether he commentated on a game for the TV international feed on BDO semi-final Saturday). Last year, he did Saturday and Sunday commentaries during FA Cup Third Round weekend and I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the case again in 2017 - indeed Jim and Ray Houghton are scheduled to host The Full Time Phone-In on Sunday 8th, so I feel it is likely that they will be talkSPORT's commentary team at Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa. Since returning to talkSPORT, he's always commentated on both legs of one of the League Cup Semi-Finals - given that he is based in Hampshire, I feel it is likely that he'll probably handle Southampton v Liverpool on Wednesday 11th. He's always put his Premier League commitments on semi-final Saturday ahead of his Lakeside work stemming back to his Absolute Radio days - I don't see this changing now he's a 3pm regular on the PL's TV international feed. But if Jim is in line to commentate on the men's final, then I could see talkSPORT giving someone else that Everton v Manchester City league game on Sunday 15th. I know they let Sam Matterface have the odd Sunday off when he was their regular commentator on that day and had a significant commitment elsewhere, in his case commentating on Africa Cup of Nations Finals for ITV4. But I don't foresee Jim dropping the bulk of his regular talkSPORT commitments during one of the busiest weeks of the year for domestic football that they have commentary rights to. |

Neither Five Live nor Sports Extra will be carrying commentary of Rangers v Celtic tomorrow because of the "ongoing situation between Rangers and the BBC". BBC Radio Scotland will be doing off-tube commentary from Pacific Quay.
I don't keep track of Five Live or its sister station, but I'd imagine this will be the first time in a while they haven't covered it, either with their own team or via a simulcast. Or if not the first time, one of only very few in relatively recent years (the fixture's absence notwithstanding). |

Isn't it about time the Rangers/BBC dispute was resolved? It's been dragging on for almost a year now.
Or will take as long as the Sir Alex Ferguson one did? |

I am surprised that Talksport didn't try and get the Old Firm game if the BBC didn't have it.

talkSPORT mid-season stats summary
With us just having reached the midway point of the Premier League season, and talkSPORT's last set of top flight commentaries before they begin their live FA Cup coverage, I thought it would be interesting to have a look at who has covered what for them thus far given the two notable changes to their broadcasts this season - the addition of Jim Proudfoot to their Premier League coverage and the departure of Stan Collymore.
After 19 Premier League matchrounds, 17 of which having been typical weekend rounds (the other two being the recent pre-Christmas midweek and Boxing Day programmes), talkSPORT have covered 14 Saturday matches (mostly at 5.30pm but also that Chelsea v Leicester 12.30pm kick-off in October) and 14 Sunday games (most kicking off at either 1.30pm or 2.15pm, but also two 12noon kick-offs that were part of double headers), with talkSPORT 2 having 17 Saturday 3pm commentaries. Sam Matterface has commentated on all 14 Saturday league matches on talkSPORT, covering all bar one with Stuart Pearce - the exception being Hull v Manchester United in August, where injured Tigers captain Michael Dawson was his co-commentator. As their new regular Sunday match commentator, Jim Proudfoot has called 12 of talkSPORT's 14 league games on that day. The exceptions were the early legs of their two Sunday double headers, both of which have been handled by Matterface. Ray Houghton appears to be their new regular co-commentator on Sundays, having summarised 9 of these games. The other five Sunday fixtures were co-commentated on by Danny Higginbotham (2), Michael Gray, Ray Wilkins and Joey Barton. Over on talkSPORT 2, the Sam Matterface and Stuart Pearce pairing have commentated on two 3pm kick-offs for them on Saturdays when there wasn't a 5.30pm commentary on their big brother station. On the other 15 Saturday Premier League matches on talkSPORT 2, we have heard four other commentators - Alex Crook (on 7 games played in London and on the South Coast), Simon Humphreys (4 in the North), Chris Cooper (2 in the North) and Adam Bridge (2 - one at Arsenal, the other at Leicester). The co-commentators that have worked with them are Danny Gabbidon (3), Matthew Etherington (2), Perry Groves (2), Alvin Martin (2), Ian Ashbee, Paul Dickov, David Fairclough, Michael Gray, Steve Harper and Ray Wilkins. Looking at matches beyond the Premier League, perhaps surprisingly talkSPORT have only used three different live match commentators so far this season - Matterface, Proudfoot and Nigel Adderley. The station's Champions League commentaries have been divided fairly equally between Proudfoot and Adderley, who've covered 6 and 5 live UCL games respectively - or rather 7 and 6 if you include the games from the late September matchround that were shifted onto talkSPORT 2 as the main station accommodated reaction to Sam Allardyce's sacking as England manager. Proudfoot has commentated on all three of Manchester United's away Europa League fixtures plus both of England's away World Cup qualifiers and their international friendly against Spain (with Stuart Pearce being his co-commentator on the Three Lions). Adderley called both Wales and the Republic of Ireland's Russia 2018 qualifiers in Austria, while Matterface commentated on all five of the station's EFL Cup commentaries plus the Community Shield, the latter alongside Ray Houghton with Proudfoot presenting. Co-commentary wise, outside of those mentioned above who've worked on their Premier League coverage, we've also heard summarising stints from Clive Allen, Danny Gabbidon, Matt Holland and Alvin Martin on the main station. Danny Murphy and Adam Virgo would have co-commentated on the September Champions League games that were pushed onto talkSPORT 2 because of the Allardyce news. I'll not go into great detail about the many different commentators and co-commentators used on the various La Liga and other European games heard on talkSPORT 2, but I will sum up their coverage of the 11 non-Premier League matches involving clubs or national teams from the British Isles that were commentaries on the station. The four World Cup qualifiers they covered were divided out between John Anderson, Alex Crook, Tim Long and Dan Windle, with Chris Iwelumo co-commentating on the two Scotland fixtures while Alan McLoughlin and Adam Virgo shared the Republic of Ireland games. Of the six Champions League and Europa League games beyond the CSKA Moscow v Tottenham fixture Proudfoot and Murphy were originally going to cover for talkSPORT - two away ties for each of Celtic, Southampton and West Ham United - Alex Crook commentated on four matches, with John Anderson and Olly Wilson getting one each. Co-commentary duties were shared out between Adrian Clarke, David Connolly, Matt Lawrence, Alvin Martin, Adam Virgo and Clive Walker. And that's your lot! |

I'm somewhat surprised that Radio Leeds have brought Noel Whelan back after his homophobic tweet when covering Leeds at Brighton before Christmas. It wouldn't shock me if the story was picked up by one of the anti-BBC newspapers once everything gets back to normal this week.
Seems a very big risk for a station to take, especially when others elsewhere have lost work over similar misuses of social media. |
