That seems like a massive oversight, should treat the bank holiday games like normal Saturdays surely?

Because of the way the contact works it seems like they are limited to TV games.
I don't entirely understand that. There are no TV games on Saturday afternoons and, if I remember rightly, BBC and talkSPORT have been known to broadcast the occasional game.

There's nothing wrong per se with aligning the Bank Holiday radio rights with the Bank Holiday TV packages if that's how the rest of the season works.

However, it's bizarre that the BH 3pm games aren't included in the two Saturday 3pm packages. The only reason I can think of is that Sky could have shown a game today (and on Boxing Day) at 3pm, as BT did in the three seasons previous; had they done so, then Five Live would presumably have had commentary of it.

It's a bit of a thin reason not to allow a 3pm commentary, though.

I don't entirely understand that. There are no TV games on Saturday afternoons and, if I remember rightly, BBC and talkSPORT have been known to broadcast the occasional game.
To clarify, there are two packages of games specifically for Saturday 3pm (Five Live and talkSPORT 2).

All other packages seem to be aligned with the TV packages, i.e. when a game isn't on Saturday 3pm (which includes Bank Holidays) it can only be on the radio if it's on TV. And the radio station it's on (Five Live or talkSPORT) depends on the TV package it was picked from. I'd assume the final day will be an exception (or treated as a Saturday for radio purposes).

It's utterly confusing and is a step backwards from the previous deal which was based on time slots.

It appears there's two contracts for Sat 3pm games and then contacts for all the TV games plus midweek games on Tues/Weds/Fri nights. It's been indicated on Twitter that games falling outside of those times have no broadcaster deal

Thanks bwcol. It sounded as if MC and ML were at Goodison from the way they were describing the action there. It makes sence that Ian Brown was the reporter there as he often reports from the Merseyside games.

They played crowd noise in the background at times from games

I think Ian Brown is based in Wales

West Ham United v Manchester United - Kevin Hatchard and Matthew Etherington

Unlike the two UK talkSPORT stations, who have eight FA Cup Third Round commentaries between them, the talkSPORT Live service will only be doing two FA Cup commentaries over the weekend. These will be on Saturday's early and late games, Manchester United v Reading and Preston North End v Arsenal.

Newstalk 106-108FM

Joe Molloy presented Off The Ball

Everton v Southampton - Paul Anthony
Manchester City v Burnley - Peter Smith
Sunderland v Liverpool - Al Ross
West Bromwich Albion v Hull City - Clive Edwards
West Ham United v Manchester United - Guy Swindells

BBC WM 95.6

Paul Franks presented BBC WM 95.6 Sport from the Hawthorns

Sheffield Wednesday v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Mike Taylor (3pm commentary on DAB in the Black Country)

League One
Walsall v Rochdale - Tom Marlow

I'm not sure what the Freeview channel 722 game was, I'm guessing it was Cardiff City v Aston Villa given that this was the commentary the iPlayer feed took after the five minute countdown and before the rights restrictions kicked in. Interesting to hear that WM regular Steve Hermon was BBC Radio Manchester's reporter at Rochdale v Walsall.

Monday 2nd January - Today FM

Philip Egan presented Premier League Live, joined by Mark Lawrenson between 2-3pm

Premier League
Middlesbrough v Leicester City - Roger Tames
Everton v Southampton - Shane Pinnington
Manchester City v Burnley - Mark Taylor
Sunderland v Liverpool - Ian Beach and Brian Kerr (3pm commentary)
West Bromwich Albion v Hull City - Alan Tolley
West Ham United v Manchester United - Adam Lindsay

I initially missed that Today FM had Premier League coverage scheduled yesterday - they haven't always covered Bank Holiday matchrounds in the past, but since the past contract these games have been split fairly even between themselves and sister station Newstalk, who had a 3pm commentary on Boxing Day and whose Premier League reports came during their usual weeknight evening programme yesterday.

It's a bit ridiculous that the Republic of Ireland's Premier League radio rights deal is more flexible than the UK's one is in some respects - chiefly that it provides Today and Newstalk with the ability to broadcast non-televised games in timeslots outside of Saturdays at 3pm, including on Bank Holidays. Given how there is very little to no animosity between BBC Radio 5 Live and talkSPORT these days, I think it would be in everyone's interest if they jointly approached the Premier League to attempt to come to a sensible arrangement that would allow both stations to, at the very least, broadcast non-televised 3pm commentaries on Bank Holidays as they have been able to under past contracts and as their Irish counterparts are still able to do under their current deals.

Thursday 5th January - talkSPORT 2

Dan Windle presented Copa del Rey Live

Copa del Rey Fifth Round First Leg
Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona - Olly Wilson and Adrian Clarke (8.15pm commentary)

It's the return of La Liga this weekend and talkSPORT 2 will have two live games in their usual weekend 7-10pm, 7.45pm kick-off, timeslot - Real Sociedad v Sevilla on Saturday and Villarreal v Barcelona on Sunday. In midweek, they will air commentary on the second legs of the two Copa del Rey ties they have covered this week, before broadcasting the evening La Liga fixtures next weekend. With there being no Premiership rugby for a month after this weekend, it will be interesting to see if they do any Sunday afternoon commentaries from Spain.

talkSPORT 2's next Premier League commentary will be West Ham United v Crystal Palace on Saturday week.
