A couple of bits of talkSPORT-related news.
It doesn't seem Up The League - their Saturday morning Football League show - is coming back. Saturday at 6am has repeats of My Sporting Life on the schedule. Brian Moore: "Despite more than doubling listening figures since I took over @talkSPORT not doing Full Contact next season. Sorry but beyond my control." It looks as though The Press Pass will run 6-9pm on a Sunday, followed by The Trans Europe Express, European football show. |

Thursday 18th August - talkSPORT 2
Alex Crook presenting Europa League Live UEFA Europa League Play-Off Round First Leg Astra Giurgiu v West Ham United - Alex Crook and Alvin Martin (7.15pm commentary) Mark Wilson presenting Super League Live from the KCOM Stadium Rugby League: Super League Super 8s Hull FC v Catalans Dragons - Mark Wilson and Michael Shenton (8pm KO, second half commentary from 9.15pm) ATP World Tour Masters Tennis Live Tennis: Western & Southern Open (Cincinnati Masters) Lindner Family Tennis Center, Mason, Ohio - Catherine Whitaker, Luke Milligan and Joe Shennan (4-7.10pm & 12-2am commentary) There isn't a set presenter for their tennis coverage, the commentators are handling the links around the matches. I said this when talkSPORT 2 carried the away leg of a West Ham's last Europa League qualifier, but I'm not sure why it couldn't have gone out on talkSPORT in order to broadcast the Super League game in full and more of the tennis on talkSPORT 2. talkSPORT Nat Coombs presenting Kick Off alongside Mark Langdon from the Racing Post UEFA Europa League Play-Off Round First Leg Astra Giurgiu v West Ham United - Graham Beecroft Olympic Games: Rio 2016 "Bulletins from Brazil" - Kate Partridge BBC Radio London Nick Godwin presenting BBC Radio London Sport UEFA Europa League Play-Off Round First Leg Astra Giurgiu v West Ham United - Jamie Hill and Nick Godwin (7.15pm commentary on 94.9FM and the BBC Sport website) BBC Radio London are doing their commentary off-tube and has been billed as such in the same way Radio 5 Live did when they worked in this manner on selected games at international tournaments. Unusually for Radio London, they are using two lead commentators on their coverage today. |

No Robbie Savage on 606 tomorrow, he's on BT, Chris Waddle replaces him
Tomorrow's 3pm is Burnley vs Liverpool & next week, it's Watford vs Arsenal. Next week, they have Burton vs Liverpool on Tuesday. Sports Extra has a game listed but no selection listed as of yet. Wednesday has Man City 2nd leg listed, given this is 5-0, I'd really hope they switch to an EFL Cup tie as let's face it, that game is dead! Darren Fletcher & Danny Mills on Utd/Soton tonight |

During last night's West Ham commentary on talkSPORT 2, Alex Crook mentioned that talkSPORT will be doing commentary on Tuesday's second leg of the Hapoel Beer Sheva v Celtic Champions League Play-Off tie. I'm pretty sure he mentioned that the game would be on talkSPORT (as opposed to TS2), although it isn't in the schedule yet.
This is a really welcome development, especially when you consider that European games involving Scottish clubs are rarely on UK-wide national radio given how Radio 5 Live's commentaries tend to involve Premier League teams. BBC Radio Scotland's European game commentaries are not always available online either, so for a lot of listeners in England and Wales they won't be able to hear commentary on the Scottish clubs in Europe that often. Indeed it's been a while since talkSPORT last did a commentary on Celtic in Europe, although I remember them being in Lisbon for their game at Benfica during the season when the Bhoys beat Barcelona in the group stage. With Tuesday also being a full programme of EFL Cup matches, I wonder if talkSPORT 2 might broadcast an Around the Grounds show as they did this week when the main station was carrying commentary on the first leg of Manchester City's Champions League Play-Off. I think doing this was another welcome development and I'd like it to become a regular thing on Champions League Tuesdays, when in previous seasons a busy domestic programme would be neglected a little bit by talkSPORT due to their live commentary commitments. On Wednesday, talkSPORT will be broadcasting EFL Cup second round commentary on Fulham v Middlesbrough with Mark Saggers hosting from Craven Cottage. Interesting to see them doing a second round commentary after they covered Luton Town v Aston Villa live in the first round. I say that as since they regained League Cup rights in excess of just the final, talkSPORT have always done nine commentaries from the competition per season - the final, both legs of both semi-finals, one quarter-final, one fourth round tie, one match from the third round plus one game from either the first or second round. Their live commentaries have typically started in the second round, although last season they covered Leeds United's first round tie on a Thursday before not doing a second round commentary (instead deciding to do commentary the away leg of Manchester United's Champions League Play-Off on the second round Wednesday if I remember rightly). So this season we should see the total number of talkSPORT's League Cup commentaries either bumped up to ten live games or they'll not do a commentary in a later round. Interesting to see that Radio 5 Live have already announced next Saturday's 3pm commentary - good to see the sensible ten-day rule for these games is still in effect. Looking at next Saturday's fixture list, I'd guess talkSPORT 2 will pick Chelsea v Burnley, although increasingly I find that during 95% of the season there's very little to choose from when it comes to the relative attraction of the five or six games scheduled each week in this timeslot. |

poor that 5Live prioritised a premier league game last night over the first half of the gold medal match involving team GB in the hockey. the cynic in me says if it had been Stoke v West Brom instead then the hockey would have been on the main station. before anyone says that the football will rate higher, thats only a valid argument when talking about commercial stations like TS where they need to please the advertisers. but its Man Utd so 5Live prioritising this shouldn't really be a shock. they did, at least put the hockey on 5LSX which is something.

Charles Sale in the Mail: Quote:
Sky Sports News’s leading presenter Jim White is to double his workload by hosting the morning show from 10am to 1pm on talkSPORT five days a week in addition to his weekday SSN duties, while continuing as the face of Sky’s transfer deadline-day coverage.
The combination of the two roles has been made possible by Sky’s overlord Rupert Murdoch recently adding talkSPORT to his media empire. White replaces super irritant Colin Murray, who says he refuses to work for a Murdoch organisation because of their coverage of the Hillsborough disaster. Yes, I'm a bit disappointed that talkSPORT 2 won't be broadcasting T20 Blast Finals Day in its entirety on Saturday, given their extensive coverage of much of the group stage and all four quarter-finals.
However, it's good that they are broadcasting the first semi-final as well as the final and, who knows, they could make commentary on the second semi-final available via a webstream as they have done for sporting events in the past prior to the advent of talkSPORT 2. While I personally would have advocated moving the 3pm Premier League commentary onto talkRADIO or even talkSPORT as part of the main Matchday Live for one week only, I can see the sense in keeping it in what will become its regular timeslot, given that their coverage only debuted last weekend. On Saturday's Tottenham Hotspur v Crystal Palace coverage, Ian Danter mentioned on Kick Off last night that Alex Crook and Alvin Martin will be the commentary team at White Hart Lane - both are southern/London-based, which adds up with my theory that we'll see different commentary teams on these games from week to week, largely based on geography. Judging by the talkSPORT.com schedule, it appears as if Stuart Pearce will be doing co-commentary alongside Sam Matterface on the Saturday 5.30pm game (Leicester City v Arsenal) for a second week running, while Jim Proudfoot will be joined by Michael Gray for Sunderland v Middlesbrough commentary on Sunday Exclusive - with Danny Kelly sitting in for Mark Saggers at host. Steve, I'm keen to hear your thoughts on talkSPORT's decision to give JP the Sunday afternoon commentary gig ahead of SM. Knowing your thoughts on the respective commentators, I imagine you're pleased with this decision. Yes, breaking their Cincinnati Open tennis coverage up with The Weekend Starts Here on Friday night seems pretty unusual - I've no idea if Andy Murray is scheduled to play that day, but if he is (set to be) on court at or after 6pm I'd be surprised if they didn't take coverage of his match regardless of their other plans. I'm confused with the scheduling of this new show, as running it between 6-8pm last week meant they were only able to join their live Super League game right upon kick-off. When Premiership rugby union returns next month - arguably talkSPORT 2's most attractive sports contract after the Premier League - surely they cannot persist with this show in its current timeslot given that these games kick off at 7.45pm and you'd imagine they'd want to retain a 7pm start to their build-up. Also, Tom Rennie is involved in talkSPORT Live's Friday night Bundesliga coverage from 7pm, so I don't see how the two can co-exist in current form. Good to see Astra v West Ham is live on talkSPORT 2 tomorrow, but again it throws up another scheduling conflict. The match is a 7.15pm kick off, with coverage due to start at 7pm after the live tennis, but they were originally scheduled to be doing full Super League commentary as they usually do on Thursday nights - instead, they'll only be having second half commentary on Hull FC v Catalans Dragons following the conclusion of the football. Given their rugby league commitments, I don't see why the West Ham match couldn't have been on the main talkSPORT. |
