SOUTHERN INDIA:

Masala dosa - a huge crispy pancake loosely rolled with spicy potato filling, served with three or four different chutneys.

Kaima iddly - rice dumplings chopped into small pieces, fried and smothered with spicy red sauce. Served with oniony yoghurt.

[B]Pani Puri - little round puffy crispy circles with some yummy stiff piled on top and I can't remember what the stuff was, but trust me it was beautiful!

.
I have lived in India and South Indian Veggie is my favourite food ever. The inside of Pani Poori is chickpeas and potatoes and the topping is Tamarind with spices added to it. When I first discovered Masala Dosa I had it every day for breakfast until I got fed up with it but still love it.

Absolutely love Om Ali - a very sweet dessert made with nuts and sultanas, milk, cream and bread - almost like a bread and butter pudding but not as stodgy.
Another is koshary which is noodle, macaroni, rice and lentils usually with a tomato type sauce mixed on top

Mmmm
Padron peppers grilled with loads of salt in Palma
tomato fritters with yoghurt in Santorini
Himmel and Erde in Munich- mashed potato and apple pancakes
shredded fried chili beef and Som Tam papaya salad in Bangkok
Polish pirogi dumplings and Golabki- lovely stuffed cabbage leaves
cevapi- Bosnian "mini fingers"- like mini kebabs,
Portuguese custard tarts- yum yum.
Laab Gai in Laos with loads of baby chilies and toasted rice and mint.

Food is the main driver when we choose our holidays

All this mention of Greek foods, I have to add my face, spanocopita. A spinach & feta pie wrapped in phyllo dough. I make a version at home sometimes but it's not as good. Freshly brined olives are hard to beat with a glass of raki too.

Eccles cakes. Simple, yes. But what a great combination of flavours and textures.

I make it in the winter months. It takes ages to prepare.

I cheat! I make a large pie, so much easier than all the little ones, it is not quite as good as the small ones, but I admit to taking short cuts when cooking.

Not sure about your face Peg 😜
Sat in a bar in Turkey some years back and watched a very experienced elderly lady make those from scratch next to a near pizza oven.
They were deliciously simple and I could never replicate her skill.

We were in Lanzarote last week and visited a rated tapas bar.
We had several dishes of Spanish Omelette, crab salad, Russian salad, fried aubergine drizzled in honey and balsamic, chorizo sausage and a cheeseboard with iberico ham.
Moderate portions but between two we were stuffed.
We took half the cheese back to the apartment.
With a bottle of wine we paid about €40.
It was a "treat".

You could get the "full English" in most Brit/Irish pubs for €2.50 and they weren't short of business.
When in Rome..........

We did something very similar in Lanzarote in early August. I did some research before we went and found a highly-rated tapas place (La Tabla, in Costa Teguise) near the hotel. It was absolutely lovely - there was a dish of roasted vegetables, which wouldn't normally enthuse me all that much, that was incredibly good. I think it's the first time in my life that I've been excited by a vegetable.

If only there was somewhere at home you could get that.

La Tabla is amazing. We went 3 times this year, 2 years ago we went 5 times in 2 weeks!

Their House Dessert is stunning.

Haha, yes, I was a bit sceptical about something with such a generic name, but my wife declared it the best dessert that she'd ever had. And this is from a woman who likes her puddings.

I love the place. I normally phone them as soon as we land to book a table.
