Ok so if it is down to personal taste then why don't I like UK pop music? I'm not racist against my own country, that would just be stupid haha, but there must be something about the style of the UK's pop music that is very different to American pop music.

I do think to a certain extent we will champion our own acts because they are British, over supporting an imported act. Hell I even asked Radio 1 to playlist Jai Waetford and they haven't (probably because of him being Australian, I mean they're pretty much ageist so why not be racist too?)

I had to look Jai up, so if you are into dreamy young voiced stuff then maybe try Scritti Politti ?

but uk pop IS the most varied in the world.. the evidence is there in our charts for the last 60 odd years.

oh... and its NOT racist to prefer uk acts to others, we are more pre disposed to like fellow uk acts as they speak for us and the world we live in.

racist is hating something/someone because of their race, nothing to do with musical preferences unless someone hates a track/artist because of their race which is not the same as disliking music of non british origin.

I think we've now reached the stage where for anybody born after about 1980, music doesn't really exist in any form that will ever trigger nostalgia. It's as if all creativity died after that and that everything which followed is just background music for TV ads.

bullshite, you obviously reached the point in 1980 when you thought current music became shite, i was born in 1980 and find that my interest waned mid to late noughties around the same age you were in 1980, hundreds of bands/ musicians evoke nostalgia for me from that period

yep I agree, I was born in 1971 I am already nostalgic for the sound of early-mid 00s bands like The Killers, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Strokes, White Stripes etc. I go back and play that era all the time I call that the MTV2 age before it went sh*t and became MTV Rocks. But yeh 80s is the most nostalgic for me.

I think the recent return of Blink 182 to number one in the album charts shows there is a generation nostalgic for the era of pop punk and nu-metal

you had the dance revolution that mixed rave, house, techno from the late 80's right through into the early 00's. there was madchester, grunge, britpop too.


seconded! i really like the early 00's. although dance was on the slide into the generic crap it is today (in mainstream) the rock and indie was imho some of the best ever produced - especially qotsa, and white stripes.

For a band named after the political writings of an Italian Neo-Marxist, Scritti Politti made some very sweet, thoughtful pop music with a great deal more variety than Aussie artist mentioned.

Why is nostalgia important when deciding whether you like music or not? Surely it's how much you enjoy it whilst you're listening that counts? I love listening to Beethoven's symphonies but I'm not nostalgic for the early 19th century.

I remember a time when there were brilliant pop records by bands such as The Buzzcocks, The Undertones and even The Cure. Sadly, I don't think we'll hear new singles of that quality ever again.

The UK still produces good music, it's that it's usually ignored by mainstream media and you sure as hell aren't going to hear about any of it on here.

why would mainstream media ignore good music? if there was a lennon, bowie, prince, whoever creating great music why would it be ignored?... unless of course there isnt such artists and music in existence.

surely nostalgia plays a huge part in the enjoyment of music? dunno about others but nostalgia is important to me, tracks from an age help fix memories from that time. this is why i still try to listen to the radio... and chart material. i dont want a track from 50 odd years ago to remind me of todays times.

i like traditional folk, i like being transported back in my imagination to this lost world of where the song comes from and what its about.

There is a difference between being 'good' and being 'great' and your names are beyond great they are legends, Prince didnt get that much attention until about 7 years into his career, David Bowie took a long time to get big as well. So who is to say that there isnt somebody who is a potential great not getting that attention yet.

But anyway the poster is saying 'good' and there are lots of 'good' music outwith the charts and radio doesnt mean they have to become megastars.

true, major artists can take a time to surface, and that is a possibility. but you cant say todays music is good just i case theres a bowie or prince style artist out there. you can only judge with whats available and popular.

todays scene will be remembered and judged by what is visible in mainstream, invisible artists are... well... invisible.

If today's music was bad I wouldn't listen to it but I still find about twenty new songs ever week that I think are good , does anybody else like them? , will they chart?? Will they be famous?? be nice if they did but to me it doesn't really matter in the end,

will I play any in twenty years time probably in the same way I play unsuccessful songs by unfamous acts that Didnt chart from the 80s and 90s.

ill be lucky to hear 20 a year that i like nowdays, am i looking? not really but then again i never did look too much, i didnt need to because there was always a decent handful in mainstream.

i do have quite a lot in my collection (60's - 90's) that didnt chart, or didnt chart highly. maybe its because i heard them on the radio when dj's had more opportunity to play more obscure tracks.

Totally this. There is a lot of fantastic music being made at the moment by some brilliant artists but it's not the sort of music and acts that will ever trouble the charts and mainstream radio.
I discover new music on a daily basis and am still as excited by finding new artists and songs as I was as a teenager

my problem is that i cannot fathom why 'good' music will be overlooked by mainstream and radio... it does not make sense.

unless its only 'good' to a minority in which case is it really good?
