Can anyone help?

Last night a little grey box came up on my tv screen - tv is old square Daewoo set - I clicked to get rid of it and now no matter what size ie full/16.9/14.9/auto I still get the fish bowl effect it just squashes and unsquashes.

I rang virgin media but there is nothing wrong with the tivo box.

Now I am at a loss - it is very annoying.

I have 2 remotes - the virgin one and tv one

I think it's trying to tell you it wants to go down the recycling centre to join all it's mates that have been scrapped already

You could try changing the SCART lead or plugging into the other SCART socket (if there is one) to see if that makes any difference. Also depending on what options both the TiVo and TV have you could try changing the video format between, say, Composite and RGB and maybe S-Video if available.

Also have a look through whatever set-up menus there are on the TV for a Factory Defaults option or a Factory Reset or similar. This should reset the TV back to it's out of the box condition and might clear any dodgy setting causing the problem.

Anything more serious than that and it's probably time to put it out of it's misery and take it down the council tip. It probably won't be economic to repair, even if you can find the necessary spares.

I've seen this happen before with these models but usually when used with a Sky remote. A random sequence of button presses (never been able to recreate this) puts the set into service mode and the first option is known as E-W or pincushion correction.

Adjusting this makes the sides of the picture either concave or convex depending on the other buttons you pressed at the time. To correct this the set needs again to be put into service mode with the TV remote. This is done by putting the set on PR91, setting the picture sharpness to minimum and pressing several other buttons in sequence. You would also need some sort of a pattern generator with RF output fed to the aerial socket to be able to tell when the adjustment is correct.

Not really a job for most people but if you can still find a small repair shop near you could probably get this done for around £40 but there is always a risk it could happen again.

I'll try the suggested stuff thank you - but as I am a little woman with no technical ability whatsoever I don't hold out much hope.

Probably time for new TV.

Have you tried unplugging it from the mains for 5 mins? Often cures obscure faults on any equipment and costs nothing to try.

Have done that and also smacked the naughty thing. Strangely the actual picture quality is much much better it's just the shape - but also getting used to it. Still time for new one methinks

That is a CRT set. Pin cushion distortion on such set was fairly common and usually due to one or two faulty diodes. Not a difficult or expensive repair if you can find someone who knows what to do.

The suggestion from 'in_focus' sounds correct to me.

I have found the service manual for it and the process to enter service mode is there. But I really don't think the OP is going to be able to do it.

But maybe a technically minded person she knows might do it for her.

(service mode is page 10)

To get into service mode is RED GREEN menu, while on PR91 and sharpness to minimum.
I suppose this could happen accidentally since it doesn't seem very secure.
