Three iMessage & Pictures - Charges?
Prof-x

I am looking for advice on sending pictures via iMessage over three & chargers.

In Message settings i have MMS disabled but send via SMS if iMessage fails.

If i send a picture via iMessage with this set up (MMS off but SMS as back up) will i be charged? I hear its about 40p and i'm sending pictures to someone abroad so i don't want either of us charged.

ps. recipient has iPhone too (but occasionally does not have 3G).

You can't send pictures over SMS - that's why MMS exists.

So unless the iPhone sends MMSes anyway even though you've turned it off, it shouldn't be sending MMSes at all, pictures should be sent as an iMessage

thank you

I assume three is not sneaky and classes this as a chargeable (40p ish) picture message ?

I assume its a direct connection to Apples' iMessage servers?

When they are sent as iMessages, 3 has no idea what you're doing, everything is encrypted so only you and Apple know what's going on.

At most you will be charged for the amount of data neede to send or receive the message, if you don't have a data allowance and are not on wifi

It's standard and the same on all networks, MMS is not the same as iMessage, in fact Three are the only network to actively encourage people not to use MMS recently in favour of iMessage etc

Use Whatsapp for pictures (and texts) that way you don't run the risk of getting charged 40p, works cross platform too ( ios Android Windows)
