According to the Guardian:

- In an email to staff, producers said they would be holding a series of face to face meetings with staff to discuss the changes and the extra workload it would entail.

- Teams would be expanded “right across the board” and said the extra episode would enable a wider variety of storylines encompassing more families and give “space for the comedy of the show to really breathe”.

- We’ll also have substantial investment in our physical infrastructure, extending the current lot and creating additional studio space. And we’ll be able to strengthen and increase our teams right across the board to support making the additional episodes.

- Editorially, moving to six episodes will give room for a larger variety of A stories spread more equally across our character groups and families.

- We’ll be going on air with six episodes in the autumn of 2017. That’s over a year away so it gives us the opportunity to define a bespoke Coronation Street solution for how we’ll achieve six, while carefully maintaining and enhancing the quality of what we do.

I mean, they must be shitting it to send an email out to staff and leak it to the public. But let's try and be positive here. This COULD work... but

They need to axe the doubles. They are so ghastly to endure. Hour long episodes please and a dedicated Sunday episode set on Sunday. I feel schedule should be

Sun 7.30 (1h)
Mon 8.30
Wed 7.30 (1h)
Frid 8.30

At least that resembles the classic schedule, is one episode a night (with two 1h ones) and gives a Sunday episode. For ITV's benefit Monday keeps 8.30 to provide the lead in to the 9pm shows (I think why it was created?)

From an editorial perspective I sincerely hope the production can manage it. It will take more than a few new sets but really smart thinking by Kate and her team - I do have faith. Perhaps with more sets they can film more things at once and also freshen the show up. They need to protect the older cast by not putting too much pressure on them, hopefully they can film lots of scenes at once to be inserted into episodes as filler, for example, with additional filming for big episodes arranged etc.

I really hope we get new outdoor space (Precinct/High Street idea is good) as well as more interior sets being made to more easily film inside the characters' homes.

This plan is doomed to fail if they don't get rid of the tedious double episodes and if the editorial team helmed by Kate Oates don't have a really seriously good plan for story lining and scheduling the filming.

Moreover there is a real sense Corrie needs to move with the times and stop being precious with its set. Let's see some of those businesses close down or relocate to a shopping street, some redevelopment in the area, maybe even the cladding come down on the Dobbs house.

And new characters, bring back old ones, plot some incredible stories and weave them together like a tapestry!

It COULD be good, this with the schedule above and a real investment to the show's teams. But it could also, and most likely will, be horrible.

I'd rather not have hour longs and just have an episode each weekday, then maybe an episode on Sunday too, or just have a double on Monday.

If done right it could breathe some new life into Corrie, with new blood in the production team.

I think Soaps should stick to 30 minute installments personally, 60 minutes should be left to Dramas. I think they'll strengthen Sunday nights again by adding the sixth Corrie to Sunday at 7:30pm, axing the 8pm Thursday Emmerdale and moving it to 7pm on Sundays to pair it with Corrie.

Wrong decision, they should be downsizing, it should be quality over quantity.
