I don't follow this series, but I just had it on in the background a short while ago. Whilst not being a prude by any means, I was a bit surprised that "feckin'" is clearly deemed OK for daytime broadcast...

Isn't it essentially "f*ckin'"? I didn't think it was even a euphemistic substitute like "flippin'", etc...

The show is broadcast at night in Ireland. It was the bbc decision to show it during the day in the UK.

I've never considered fe****g to be the same as F**king because it was a Fr Ted curse

Yes, I realise that, but I'm surprised it wasn't edited...

Not really. It would be considered slightly ruder than say 'bleedin' but not much more so. It showed up a lot in Father Ted for example, while the 'F' word was never used.

Are you sure you didn't mishear it because the show was broadcast pre - watershed in Ireland at 8:30pm, so swearing wouldn't be allowed at that time either.

Oxford and Collins dictionaries seem to differ (I know I have far too much time on my hands ) - Oxford says it's a euphemism, Collins a variant...

In my ignorance I have to say I always thought it was just "f*ck" as pronounced in a heavy dialectal Irish accent

Nope, definitely not - was "feckin'" on the subtitles too.

Around 34:15 here: http://bbc.in/29Eg46K

No, it was in the script today alright but it's not considered an especially vulgar term in Ireland. You would never hear the 'F' word used on Red Rock though as that would be regarded as too coarse for pre-watershed viewing.

I guess it's just very mild swearing, the same as something like "crap" I suppose.

We heard Vinnie say "bleedin" as well today but I even remember Del Boy using the same word in Only Fools and Horses.

I enjoyed today's episode, I'm getting the feeling that they're going for a "storyline of the episode" sort of approach, yesterday It was the man dying in hospital and today the lady with dementia. I think It's getting better each episode though, I'm enjoying it.
Episode 3 - 8/10

They tend to mix up the storylines a bit, sometimes introducing a new story and characters per episode, other times concentrating on a major storyline involving the main characters.

I thought today's one was good and the young guy caring for his mother turned out to be not all bad......Sharon felt quite sorry for him by the end.

Seriously people it gets better and interesting storylines so don't switch off. Thank god I didn't switch off at the start. I'm watching at Ireland pace on TV3 and they are airing season 3 in September. BBC has a while to catch up. I recommend give it a chance it's a new show for the uk that has not seen before.

Definitely sticking with it, I love it after 3 episodes. Paudge is great, every station has a Paudge I should think. Remember The Bill had Reg. I will stay switched on

The storyline of the episode format peters out after a while.

The UK response to the show appears to have been pretty positive so far.

Good episode today, enjoying more of the focus being on the police station and the staff there as opposed to the two families.

I think I enjoy the police centred episodes more but the Kielys in particular are usually good value when they're onscreen.

The Kiely's are the stronger of the two families at the moment in relation to the story of the week so far. They are a real mix of characters, Katie being the feisty one and not afraid to speak her mind to anyone who crosses her. Whereas her mum is devious and has a background that she wants to keep covered up for now. I thought Vinnie was gong to give in yesterday, but after having his fun he kicked her out. Good for him, but will it last I'm not too sure. Keith is a mummy's boy, hopefully he will see sense soon.. I'm hooked and not afraid to say so

I think Vinnie and Katie are similar, quite level headed and emotionally intelligent. They can both be fiery but are not reckless.

Keith is much more like his mother, Bridget. Very impulsive and rash and of the "Act first, think later" mindset. You could argue the two of them are a little more shallow than Vinnie and Katie, who appear to have a bit more about them

I'm hoping that Vinnie really sees through Bridget and gives her the heave ho before she convinces Keith to do something really silly. Is Keith the youngest of the family? That might be why he clings on to his mum's every word.

Good episode today, loved the confrontation scene with Bridget & whatshername from the other family, she really put her in her place!

THIS! Stick with it guys..I thought it was a bit crap for the first few episodes but I am too watching it at Irish pace and it's on fire at the moment! Some real genuine shock moments that happen in it too, they keep a lot of things under wrapped

Just watched the first five episodes in the space of a couple of days. I LOVE it.
I've suspected from very early on that Bridget and Patricia are the main reason the two families are fighting. Both are great characters.
Brian's story with the underage girl surprised to see a story like that at 1:45 on BBC1 but I'm sure it's nothing dissimilar to what Doctors might have covered in the past (which I've never watched). Absolutely gripped.
So is this Monday-Friday for the next 35 episodes?
