Does anyone have any idea when the new VM Tivo box is being released?

Good news if the report is right that TiVo 2 is about to come this year.

I would hope that the box is out by Autumn as the TV network push out better shows then and I also hope that box can record more channels at the same time then TiVo 1 does now and 4K is added to the EPG software for clear viewing.

Hoping that Virgin are going to allow the box to have more then 1TB to allow more space to record SD HD & 4K shows.

Hope that box shape is better with better control lighting and data on the outside so customers understand what the box is doing if no image on screen .

Hope that box does not have WIFI on it as most homes have too many signal from around they homes that signal changes are needed on the hubs.

Hope that the boxes can use a network cable like TiVo 1 can but allowing user to work with each box fully ?

I would like the 'spinning iron' HDD to be replaced with a SSD.

No reason it needs to be. Too high an extra cost for something that is not absolutely necessary. (IMO)

I would like the 'spinning iron' HDD to be replaced with a SSD.
I would like the following on the new box and the following features

DVB-C2 tuners
MPEG4 HEVC
DOCSIS 3.1 Built-in Modem
Dynamic EPG
HbbTV 2.0.1
HDMI 2.0 Sockets
The ability to stream what you are watching on more than one box
Family Folders - so you each have your own folders with your own content in them
New Remote Control

And I'm sure if you finance it, it will happen!

Personally, I'd be happy with the current Tivo functionality in a faster box.

I would like the following on the new box and the following features

DVB-C2 tuners - No real need otherwise it will knock out the existing boxes
MPEG4 HEVC - I can see this being needed
DOCSIS 3.1 Built-in Modem - in planning anyway
Dynamic EPG - unlikely due to how the EPG is broadcast
HbbTV 2.0.1 - no need, we kinda already have it. (our own version think eurosport, bbc, al jazeera channels)
HDMI 2.0 Sockets - not needed unless you plan on doing 4K with HDCP not every 4k set has it. for compatiability I'd stick to 1.4
The ability to stream what you are watching on more than one box - Tivo already has it, just not enabled this side of the water, look up tivo mini
Family Folders - so you each have your own folders with your own content in them - tivo already has it not enabled this side of the water.
New Remote Control - no need the peanut is fine

Answers are in bold

This and the ability to stream from my TiVo box to my tablet. If we could get the TiVo Roamio (a full version not a watered down uk version) over here I think it would give sky q a run for its money.

VM will no doubt make it an option to upgrade to (as they did the tivo to the hd-box), at least initially, making it more "standard" in a year to new contracts....

that is roughly what they did with tivo...

the other thing is its about a year since VM started hyping up "vivid 200" was coming... but my eta has slipped from summer to xmas 2016... 18 months from "it is coming" to actually getting is how VM marketing seem to think it should be

To be fair, Tivo wasn't much quicker

Personally, I'd be happy with half the current functionality in a box 10 times as fast. The only functionality I want is the ability to record (one-off and season passes) from a program guide. There is one feature I would like that doesn't exist, that is the ability to copy recorded programs (in a playable format) to another device. But I can't see this happening due to copyright etc. issues.

isn't that what the EPG is for and currently does?

Exactly. Does seem like an odd thing to say

I can only assume the reply will be "it doesn't always work" or "it's not dynamic" or something else we've heard 100s of times before.

Of course, no-one has ever claimed it is perfect. But it's pretty damned close.

I think that s/he meant to say that it's the only function that s/he needs.

Apparently, it's not the apps that slow down TiVo, but the support that they need to work.

I created a poll on another site to gauge if people agreed with me that the apps should be scrapped in favour of an increased speed for the functions that TiVo is essentially for.

Overwhelmingly, people wanted to keep them

No, you both misunderstood me. I will restate my sentence with one extra phrase -

(Of the existing functionality) the only functionality I want is the ability to record (one-off and season passes) from a program guide.

That is *all* I want. I would happily sacrifice every other feature for increased speed.

However, if I get around to sourcing a cheap and cheerful DVR that does only that, but also lets me copy recordings to a PC then I would throw Tivo in the bin in a heartbeat.

Well, like I said, basic Tivo functionality. That and Wishlists is all the original S1 did back in 2000.

Fair enough. But then any basic DVR will do that but none will do it anywhere near as well as Tivo.

Yes, that's exactly what I want. I loved the original Tiros I had back then, they were fast and did just what I wanted. The big bonus as well was that the recordings could be copied to a PC.

Been told that when the new box does arrive, it will in all likelihood be self install.

For once I agree with Carl

Although I am a great believer in SSDs and am always fitting them to friends' PCs with dramatic effect, in this use case they would currently be the wrong thing. Given that one needs at least 1TB and probably 2TB with the advent of 4K, then it would double the basic component cost of such a box. Given that the typical usage is streaming sequential blocks from disk, I see no reason why spinning disks shouldn't suffice.

Apparently, when the new box comes out, we "may be pleasantly surprised" at the cost.

As long as it doesn't cost any more than my Tivo I'll be happy. Be even happier if they would transfer all my existing recordings onto the new box. Yeah, I know. Not gonna happen
