The problem that many people have is this.

What if the new TiVo comes out after the window to cancel because of the price rise has expired?
It most likely will be afterwards - even when it is fully 'launched', I'd expect it to be several weeks before its available to order/install.

Do people jump ship whilst they can?
Yep - that's what I'm doing. Though mainly because of the relentless price rises, rather than just performance of Tivo. When I renewed my deal at the end of July, I agreed a price even though it was more expensive than VM's competitors. A further increase was too much and too many per year for me.

What if the new TiVo is too expensive or has performance issues too?
It will probably be both. Early adopters often pay a premium for new technology and risk ending up with bug-ridden software too. Look how the price of Sky Q (both the initial set-up cost and monthly subscription) has come down just six months since launch.

You're then stuck with a crappy box for up to a year (six months in my case).
Thanks to the price rise, no-one has to be stuck with it though - you could cancel your TV service now and negotiate a new 12 month deal for just broadband and phone - if you wish to keep those service with VM. Then in 12 months time, the V6 will probably be cheaper and have had any initial bugs ironed out.

What you can't do of course is drop TV and have the other services just for the remainder of your current 6 month minimum term.

But why gamble on waiting for a new box we know very little about, when you can switch away for 12 months and get a set top box that performs better for you immediately. For all we know it could be six months or more before the V6 is available to install. Wasn't the current Tivo only available to a few customer trialists to begin with?

Thanks, that's certainly food for thought.

Will you be getting one straightaway Carl? Were there any significant issues on release of the current Tivo? I held back for 6 months because I had V+ immediately it was released and it was terrible.

Carl has said that he has an existing 1tb box, it's running ok, he doesn't need six tuners and has some recordings that he wishes to keep; so he won't be bothering to upgrade.

I only took a V+ when the monthly charge was dropped for XL customers, what were the problems with the V+?

I had V+ before it was properly advertised, probably a month after it was released. It almost went back because it had numerous faults which they kept trying to fix and creating new ones. It would not record consecutive programmes at one point! I had 4 different boxes over the time i had it, still on the original Tivo.

Wow, apart from the known bugs, my V+ worked perfectly for many years until it broke down last March (which is when I switched to TiVo).

The first 3 were the old ones, the original one said Tv Drive on it. The 4th one was the new one (Samsung?) and has worked pretty well for about 5 years now.

Richard already nicely answered that

I really don't recall but I don't think there were.

IIRC the biggest issue that people had was that, unlike the V+, there wasn't the ability to set programme reminders, so this was eventually introduced.

Oh don't get me started on that pointless 'feature' again. What a (minority) fuss over nothing that was.

Indeed! I sometimes wonder what other features we could have had if they hadn't wasted all that time implementing Reminders.

not pointless but we wont go into that argument again.

I watch my TV by the live programming, thats how i am, others choose to use it as a recording tank and feel live tv should actually be removed and used solely to record.

i know some people feel there should be no live programming at all and use just on demand.

I assume they will decide pricing closer to launch as Sky Q install starts from £15, so that 'guarantee' doesn't seem to be worth very much based on the install prices quoted!
The features sound very much like Sky Q which when you add Tivo software is a very good start. I wonder what the other features could be.. ?

Why would you need a 100mbs account even HDR streaming needs only about 35meg

And the box should have it's own broadband connection, like the Tivo does. (Though I guess they might be dropping that idea then?)

If it won't cost any (or much) more than my Tivo I may consider it. (Assuming it's a Tivo. If not I won't bother.)

Carl, it is not a TiVo box it is a V6 (ETOS) box, what software will be on it or would it looks like when switched on
is anyone's guess as there are no photos of it at present, only what the box looks like

How will that work in areas where the broadband slows down to just a few Mb at peak time, wIll the on demand TV become unusable too?

The one good thing about TiVo is it has a dedicated connection which uses a different part of the network, so even if the broadband is rubbish at peak times the TiVo should still work.

Oh okay. Well, like I said; if it's not Tivo-based I'm not interested.

It's been confirmed by VM on an investor call that it will run Tivo software initially.

It is TiVo based.

And lightning fast I'm told.
