I've heard these guys before, they sound reasonably good but they are not 100x times better than top 40 stuff, or indeed particularly different from top 40.

Amy Studt had some chart success and at times sounds a bit close to Avril Lavene.
I've listened to a lot of the recommendations and I think there is an explanation in many cases why these artists haven't broken through bigger (assuming that is the intention of the artist and the desire of the listeners). Often the musical arrangements these days have become overly polished and sonically limited. I keep hearing the same sort of synth sounds again and again and the songs are all constructed in much the same way...I'm just not sure how to really differentiate artists. Many of the songs I hear are very well constructed and produced but utterly forgettable. They just wash over me. And does anyone know how to write interesting lyrics anymore?
