With the news that Coronation Street is
Spoiler
killing off Kylie
It really has me trying to understand the logic behind it and question why do all the British soaps seem to enjoy killing off characters. I've been watching the UK soaps for almost 4 years and in that time I've seen Tina and Callum get their heads bashed in, Hayley commit suicide and watched Carl kill Sunita on Corrie, Katie fall to her death and Robbie shot with a flare gun on Emmerdale and there have been too many death to recall on Hollyoaks. Those deaths add up to more deaths than I've seen on the US soaps in nearly 20 years of watching them. While the deaths do add some drama its all short term and the character can never be brought back which is a shame especially in the cases of
Spoiler
Kylie
, Tina and Callum. there is much more story potential if the characters were to live. Also if the shows insist on killing characters off can't they do it like the US soaps so there is some chance the characters could come back? Like Tina could have been left in a coma, Callum's body could have been missing from Gail's man hole and
Spoiler
Kylie could fake her death after the cops realize she is the one who killed Callum.

Just a stupid ratings stunt no doubt

They ought to knock off killing great characters. It pisses ppl off

Really hoping Kylie fakes her death cos killing off such a brilliant character is unforgivable

Yes it does piss people off and I get that they do ti for ratings but you'd think a core character like
Spoiler
Kylie
they would want to leave the door open so they could come back one day. IMHO its very short sighted.

Especially when I don't think Paula even wanted Kylie to be killed. She just got told, "she's gonna die" and that was it

Carla should have died not Kylie. They've killed 3 characters off in this Callum story for no reason. First Callum, then Tony, now Kylie. It's like they're on a mission to kill everyone else too!

Callum wasn't really great but he didn't need to die. He could have gone to prison
Tony was only killed so he couldn't defend himself
And if Callum hadn't of been killed, Kylie wouldn't of been either

I don't mind the occasional death in a soap but when it reaches Hollyoaks number of deaths over the last few years that's when it's ridiculous and I haven't watched in a while because of this.

I completely agree or if they insisted on killing Kylie send her on a flight to visit Becky, David gets a call that the plane went down and no bodies were found. That way they still get to play out the aftermath of the death but leave it open so Kylie could come back one day. This is one area that the British soaps could learn a lot from the US soaps.

Still not sure why EastEnders killed off Peggy but at least they gave her a good send off. Coronation Street is the worst. They just kill characters off for no reason other than getting good ratings and being plastered all over the media

And for what? To kill the best soap character ever? Pffttt
So selfish

But as I said none of the characters should have died

1) reckon Callum could have changed. He was very fatherly towards Max so maybe he could have been redeemed and made into a better person. He fell into a bad crowd clearly cos Marions nice. Kylie and Gemma have become better ppl so why couldn't he?

2) Tony had the potential of being a really good character. Maybe Coronation Streets version of Phil Mitchell?

3) Kylie's my number 1. No way should she be killed. Can't believe that

Do you think maybe TPTB do it to scare other actors from leaving?

Not sure. But it's not on doing it whatever their game. Don't they realise if they kill Kylie there's no going back? Says the boss didn't want her to go, uh alright mate, why kill her then? I think he was punishing Paula for being pregnant again. Bastard

Even if Blackburn was mad at Kylie, it doesn't explain all the other characters that have been killed off to serve no purpose except for cheap shock value.

I do like a good death when it comes to television. Not gonna lie
Can't go wrong with it.

Probably killed Callum cos he was a villain and ppl were getting sick of him. At the time that's probably what ppl wanted to happen. I bet they regret it now

Tony was killed so he'd be blamed for Callum's murder and couldn't defend himself cos he was dead

I dunno why but I think the boss maybe comes on here? Sees how loved Kylie is, so thinks "oh let's kill her off ppl love her on Digital spy/other forums" it's like his goal is to piss ppl off. "Let's get back at all her fans and kill her off"

I mean how immature is that?

Really? I think you can. I think its better to leave the door open for character returns, when the shows don't do that you never see the character again, they get a twin or you get Bobby Ewing style rewrite.

and that's when a show starts to lose credability. Dallas was never the same after the whole dream season bollocks with Bobby Ewing. I agree death doesn't always need to happen but then twins or continuous recasts don't really happen over here as they do on US soaps.

Well there doesn't need to be a twin or recast, just let the character live off screen until the actor wants to come back, maybe if the actor doesn't return after a few years then consider recasting. I think its a shame to lose a pivotal character like Kylie and had Dallas had this kind of foresight they would have left the door open for Bobby Ewing to come back in a realistic way.

I think the reaction to Kylie has been terribly OTT, pathetic and ridiculous. I will be sad to see her go but oh well. That's life.

Really? I think its a shame to kill off such a great character, I get the character has to go since Paula wants out but there are other ways of handling it.

It is a shame to kill off a great character but that argument could be applied to any soap character. It's just the way it is. And I think Kylie's death could really be the making of new stories for the platts and David.

My only anger in her death is it being spoiled by Corrie themselves. It could of been one of the best twists the show has pulled out in years.

Tbh I'm more p*ssed off they revealed she was going to die, had they kept it secret it would have been amazing viewing and may have been the beginning for Corrie to get more exciting.

If actors decide to quit then the bosses have every right to kill them off imo

Agreed.

And I am usually not fussed about characters dying (although I was not keen on Corrie's Tony getting an offscreen death), particularly those who have been in a show for a long time; that should not make them exempt from getting killed off.

Yes that is the right of TPTB but that doesn't mean its the correct decision, especially when so many characters die, the audience will start to become numb to all these deaths, plus all the wasted story potential. Think what a great story could be if David moves on with his life remarries and then Kylie returns 5 years from now wanting to get her family back.
