It's used for somone who misrepresents their ability (or identity) in order to gain an advantage in a competition.
It was used in horse racing when a fast horse was substituted for a slower one that it resembled (a "ring-in"), "Ring" was used by the criminal fraternity to mean to "substitute" usually with the intention to defraud someone. And that probably comes from back in the days when Anton was a lad and counterfeit metal coins didn't make the correct ringing sound when they were dropped on a hard surface - they didn't ring true.

Ooh wow, a fascinating explanation Mrs G, the expression has more to it than I had thought it would but it makes perfect sense! So in Strictly terms it could be linked to people having prior dance experience I suppose. Thank you so much for typing all this, really interesting - it's something I'd been wondering about for ages!

She's doing really well Sandy and Stewie. Vet said they caught the infection really early and all her bloods were good. Nothing sinister, thank goodness. Has to wear her collar for 10'days and just gentle exercise. She's lying here get totally spoiled. I'm just so glad we took her to the vet when we did.
Are you still keeping up with the Olympics. How exciting is the sprint.

collaw I actually have not read a Mills and Boon in my life but I am a great Jane Austen fan and I grew up reading Georgette Heyer ....
However. I am now too old to be a revolutionary - I spent years protesting to no purpose, they still experiment on animals for example and there is still factory farming but it is only when the left win elections that we actually achieve something - banning of guns and fox hunting and the introduction of the minimum wage and so on.
I really don't want to belong to a protest group for life which is where you lot are going !

I like Frankie - she was talking about a programme she has made about trolls and finding them and trying to make them understand the seriousness of what they are doing to the people they are targeting. She seems to be speaking from the heart. This will mean a lot a Georgia I imagine. ✌️👏

Coincidentally, I've just spent most of my morning watching the rather heated Labour leadership hustings on the Victoria Derbyshire programme! Can't disagree with what you say here Sandy, Jeremy's a kind and honest man but when you have a 1/3 of Labour voters in the last election saying that they would prefer to have Theresa May as PM you know you have a quite serious problem!

Well, she is slacking Afton!
Perhaps my mistranslation earlier this week has put her off a bit, as I accidentally stated that she had already broken into GGs house! I guess they will have taken her out somewhere, unless they had one of Georgia's homemade specials which have got rave reviews in the past! Haven't heard anything about Gio's homemade specials, but from what I've heard about his cooking I'm sure they would be very 'special' indeed!
