Hi bought this tv from currys/pc world The problems are very slow channel change and when changing channels for eg you select channel 4 it will go either 5 or 3!
some of the EPG on the main guide the info is not for the programme that you have checked. Right so far it's been back to the repair center and had new software installed
it was delivered back tonight but I told the delivery staff that I will check everything is ok before they drive off LOL channel switching times is fast so good there. Correct channel selected is spot on. How ever the guide (main guide EPG) is showing on some channels the inccorrect info for a particular programme.. The delivery guys (who arent technical) kept saying it's a signal problem (signal strength and quality are good!) and on virgin media (totaly different platform) it happens!!!
they kept arguing with me the customer so i proved a point on 2 other freeview devices the info is correct for any given programme i may want to watch Yes sometimes is completely missing or a description (sentence) is only half typed in. This problem was mainly on ITV2. Any way eventually they took my set back and I have kept the loan set till they can look in to it for me.

I also proved a point with the loan set that the EPG info is correct on ITV2 on the Samsung loan set. so called pc world customer services who spoke to the tech/repair dept came back to me to say that they have a had a email from JVC sayiong they are aware of this EPG problem and is going to do a OTA update soon is this possible as it's not a software problem which is via a USB update. I thought OTA is now not used
any more? Any one could which is right please!! And any one had one of these sets exclusive to currys/pc world TIA

Though I haven't seen anything on Freeview for a long time. In these days of Smart TVs with multi GB firmware (and I mean hundreds of GB) updates it would really be impractical to do OTA updates.

Mind you I would take anything those muppets at Currys tell you with an entire salt mine much less a pinch.

JVC TVs are not really JVC, they are made by Vestel along with all those other cheap and cheerful supermarket own brands. If you have a Samsung on loan then you probably have a better set now than the one you bought!

Thanks for your reply Did ccheck that DTG site and there's nothing for JVC/Vestel at moment so it seems some manufactures do still use this method. Now regarding the main EPG could this only be fixed via a OTA update or is this only really fixed by a USB update
It doesn't appear to be software problem or even a boardcasting problem either.
what I may do is get Pc world to email me the email second support ( not customer facing) the details of this pending update which customer support now has on thier screens.
or simply contact JVC? And I have been waiting since march 2016 which is when I reported the problems to Pc world In may 2016 I called pc world to see what was happening and they said we have lost your details GRRRRRRR so they put me back in the Que and even before they lost my details wouldn't tell me where I was in the Que they said they aren't allowed to tell me as I might get angry! I was already angry anyway

This is 2016, if something is brand new and faulty demand a replacement not a repair, if that is as bad demand your money back. Don't waste your time on forums. Personally I would avoid Curry's as well.

You said yourself that the delivery guys are non-technical. What you haven't said is whether they (or you) did a "shipping condition / factory reset" and retune before you looked at the EPG. It may make no difference at all if the repair centre is working from the same transmitter as your home and it does turn out that the software/firmware is glitchy, but it does take one variable out of the equation.



Under the Consumer Rights Act the customer has 30 days from date of purchase/delivery to uncover any faults and then reject the set. In this case that time it seems has long since passed. March and May have both been mentioned, so unless there's some new information that sheds more light on this situation then I'm going to guess that the retailer is within their rights to offer to repair first.

I would be very surprised if there is ever an OTA update. Far more likely that if it is a software issue it will be a USB based update simply due to the size of the firmware in modern TVs.

Completely pointless contacting JVC as they will simply tell you to do one and go back to Currys.

To Anthony I have had the set for well over 30 days so that's why i haven't asked for a replacement plus forums are great for getting help and advice but i have learnt my lesson about currys/pc world i will never buy anything from them again Chris They did a factory reset and a firmware update and a lot of the faults have now cleared I also retuned the Tv when they delivered it back to me. Hand on heart would you say the EPG problem is 100% a software issue or what else could be causing this?
One thing i didn't mention is the EPG problem only started when the clocks went forward
it's not automatic which surprised me so i changed the time manually to the correct time
and after some parts of the EPG (info related) was incorrect I am also getting my Tv from Fenton Relay off Sutton Coldfield TX but that wouldn't make any difference. Thanks again

From your descriptions so far I'd definitely lean towards a software/firmware issue rather than some kind of component failure. If a capacitor or some other electrical component had gone faulty then you'd be seeing issues on a far wider basis; you'd have picture or sound problems. As it stands right now the problems you're encountering are confined to a limited section of the set's EPG display. That sounds to me like the software isn't processing all the incoming data correctly so some of it isn't being displayed. However, they have mentioned the signal being too strong; I'd expect picture break-up on some channels if that really was a concern, so I'd fit a variable attenuator (ebay link) just to rule that out as a possible cause.

Once the problem has been identified then the next step in the process is to look at what can be done to rectify the issue. This is where I think things get trickier.

Software isn't something that a Service Centre can rewrite. The most they can do is clear the EEPROM and reload a stable version (if one exists) or reload a fresh copy of the existing version. That doesn't solve the problem if the coding within the software has a bug. So in reality this is a manufacturer issue. Someone there has to go through the lines of code and figure out what needs to be changed to sort out the problem.

The issue for you is how long it will take Currys to persuade the manufacturer (Vestel) to fix this, and then how quickly it can be resolved; and that's assuming that the first rewrite hits the nail on the head and that there's no further bugs uncovered or introduced.

The other issue is who ultimately has the responsibility for upholding warranty claims. This is nothing to do with Consumer Rights / SOGA. This is about the relationship between the retailer and the manufacturer. In days gone past it was simple. The manufacturer was wholly responsible for after-sales support to the dealer and their service department. Things started to get more complicated as TV retailers started to look at ways to enhance their margin. One solution was to buy out the warranty on certain models of TV. In other words the TV retailer would take a calculated gamble that in exchange for a lower cost price they would take on full responsibility for any after-sales support that would have been provided by the manufacturer. In essence then if there's any issue with a TV then the Buck stops with the retailer's service department. That's okay if all the service department has to do is replace the odd capacitor or inverter in a few TVs, but if there's something more serious like a wide-ranging software bug then the retailer is screwed.

As a consumer you won't know what the status of the warranty is between the retailer and the manufacturer. To be honest too it really doesn't matter; your Contract in Law is with the retailer. Their arrangements with their suppliers are really none of your business. Where things start to get messy is in how the retailer supports you when there's a problem with a TV with a bought-out warranty where the fix isn't simple. One solution is for them to replace the set with an identical model, but that only works where the issue is confined to that one set. Another solution is to give you the option of swapping to a different model with a cash adjustment. The third (and their preferred solution) is the repair process, but again that's not much use for faulty software. What you want to avoid is being caught in an endless loop of fruitless repair attempts as they simply reload broken software on a TV because they can't really do anything more.

If I was in your shoes I'd start a process to get a resolution within a reasonable time frame. They've already had at least one go at fixing the problem. They're now having a second. They have left you with a loan set both times which is fine but it doesn't mean they can take forever to resolve this. I'd be looking for something in writing from Currys that states what the issue actually is and how long they think it will take to fix. If it is software or firmware then I'd push for a swap of TV to a different manufacturer and just accept that it'll cost you a bit extra but it's worth it to get rid of the hassle. I wouldn't accept any suggestion from Currys that the value of your set is reduced pro-rata for the time you've had it. IMO the software was buggy from day one, but it only came to light after the clock change for BST.

I just wish the repair center was customer facing but it's not. oh know How on the repair recipt at the bottom says "Never leaving a customer to fend for themselves" yeah right!! I would be surprised if the EPG problem was related to BST. As far as I know the date and time data is embedded in the EPG so one would think if BST screwed up the EPG it would affect every TV not just this one. There may have been a bit of confusion in the EPG at the time of the clock change due to the "missing" hour but that should ahve more than sorted itself out by now.

Just out of interest how soon after switching the TV on are you looking at the EPG? I have noticed on my own TV that if you dive into the EPG immediately after switch on it can be somewhat corrupted. Though it sorts itself out eventually, usually in about 10 minutes or so. But if you are having EPG problems an hour or more after switching on then doesn't sound like the set sorting itself out loading the full EPG data.

Is it a Smart TV? If so I seriously doubt any update will be OTA. And I wonder who they e-mailed to get this "known fault will be fixed by an OTA update" from. As JVC direct you back at Currys for all servicing issues I doubt it was JVC, Vestel perhaps? Or just as likely they made it up!

If the TV has an ethernet or WiFi connection for the Smart features then it is normal for that to also be used for updates. So no need for USB or set recalls, the TV just "phones home" and locates any available update all by itself.

I knew they couldn't help me! Yes I do wait to check the EPG and the Tv will have been on for well over 4 hrs!!!! Like I said Iam not prepared to keep having the set sent back to me with the same problem. The Tv is not a smart Tv but does have a ethernet port so data channels can be accessed but this not connected. I feel this going to be a drawn out process! I really need to see the email that Know How have supposedly had. Wether they will let me have that infomation is a different story. Thanks again

Regardless of whether it's the clocks changing or some other cause the fact remains that the TV isn't working as it should. Whether that's then a major inconvenience or really just a minor niggle is up to you, and that might affect the outcome. Either way I think you should look for a date sometime in the near future where you can expect this problem to be fixed. Give them say a 6 week window and make it clear that if you have to wait any longer then you will expect to receive either a full refund or an upgrade to a better brand. Put this in writing. There's plenty of examples online about how to write a complaint letter.

Well spoke to know how again yesterday after my loan set developed a fault they couldn't tell me me when another loan set is available but gave me a tracking number for my set went to knowhow.com typed in my tracking number clicked track and I got a message saying the certificate for knownow may not be from know how so wasn't prepared to take a chance on that. I was using Chrome it may be nothing but wasn't gonig to ke a risk.

The fault on the loan set started only yesterday was watching tv then it went off then booted on then straight off again today it's done it twice so I leave it unplugged for a hr then it can last a good few hrs or just 30 mins. sounds like a PS fault to me i was going to do a factory reset but don't want to risk any more problems. I told know who I don't want
my set back till it's fixed and typing this via a internet box via the loan set which has been on a hr so it will probably be ok for a little longer!

Loan set has been ok since I did what I did to it they delivered my set back just now with a new main board in it not made any difference to main EPG incorrect info showing for certain programmes so have gone back to winter time on the clock menu and the info is showing correct details for programmes that are incorrect for BST? Very strange problem not sure how it can be corrected has any one else got the same problem with either their JVC 40 tv or any other make of Tv?? TIA

No sadly they are a hr out but at least the info for the programmes affected is now correct! A couple of hrs after Know How had left a few of the other faults started again. 1. When changing channels the Invalid Service message came up so my m8 says probably not a good signal well fraid not the signal quality and strength was green and next to each section said 'good' so it's not a signal problem. The EPG is not correct (in parts) if the clock time is set to the correct time. the 3rd problem so far hasn't been seen but would suspect it will apear. Insert CI Module. There's no way I am having it repaired a 3rd time. What are my options now? Can I ask for a different make of Tv and pay the difference? I doubt I can claim my money back. And would I really want the same make of set again? I tihnk I might
get trading standards involved. Any ideas what's the best course of action to take?

I don't see as it's 'Trading Standards Time' yet, you need to go back to Currys and see what they say first, explain that the TV isn't of 'merchantable quality', and that you would like a new replacement set (of a different make), or a full refund so you can purchase a working TV from elsewhere.

There was no point talking to JVC (or Vestel) earlier, JVC stopped making/selling TV's in the UK a number of years ago - and this set isn't anything to do with JVC, presumably Curries have bought the right to use the name? (originally Comet bought the rights), so it's a Currys TV and they are solely responsible.

If they refuse to either replace or refund, then you go to Trading Standards.

Incidentally, the TV isn't 'faulty' - which is why they couldn't repair it - it's almost certainly a software problem, but as Currys are effectively the 'manufacturer' it's likely to be a very long time (if ever) that it gets an update.

It's no surprise the same issues surfaced again. I said it ages ago in this thread; it's not a hardware problem such as a blown resistor or failing capacitor or dodgy transistor. I am convinced that this is software/firmware that's the problem. Replacing the main board or any other components with the same items is as much use as trying to fix a flat tyre on a car by changing the windscreen wipers. Its a waste of time as you have now found. Niger is telling you the same thing too.

You now have the experience of knowing where the problem lies. You also now know that Vested makes sets for lots of other brands. That should then make you cautious about buying brands other than Sony, Samsung, (most) Panasonics and LG. If I was you I'd get a refund and go visit a John Lewis store if you have one local. They'll price match any local bricks and mortar retailer and you'll get a JL 5 year warranty.

The bit I've put in bold - how do you know? If you're relying on the 'signal strength / signal quality' meters in a set, then I'd be *very* cautious.

I've know digital tv signals to be disrupted when, for example, the lead was touching a mains lead to another piece of equipment. And if it were only happening on certain channels then it *could* be localised interference which is affecting certain MUXes (the blocks channels are transmitted in) - where I live there is one MUX which from time to time becomes very flaky - I haven't yet traced the source of the problem, but as it broadcasts channels we don't bother with it's not high on my list of priorities.

Unless you've had the aerial installation checked out by a specialist, or you are a specialist with the relevant kit, then I don't think you can discount that just yet.

Take the TV to the shop and plug it in to their aerial, accept no refusal from them to do this. If the fault can be shown to them in the shop demand a refund on the spot threatening legal action if they refuse. If there is no fault, apologise profusely and get a reputable aerial rigger in. The fact that the set has been to their workshop means that either the fault could not be reproduced there, pointing to a problem at your location, or they are simply incompetent, in which case it is pointless to continue negotiations with them.
Doing anything else is a waste of time.

Out of interest - are you getting 'duplicate' channels in the 800s ?

You got an 'invalid service' message - that points to an intermittent or poor signal i.e. the set was able to tune it in on one day, but the signal wasn't there or was weak the next.

The EPG is not fully corrupted - by your own admission "The EPG is not correct (in parts)" - again this would suggest a weak signal which means only the channels on that MUX are the problem.

The fact that it has been taken back to a repair centre - which will almost certainly have a good aerial set up and they've not been able to replicate the problem again is pointing to a signal problem.

A couple of other relevant pieces of information may help here:
- Where are you located (general postcode area will do ie. Northampton NN1, Stoke ST2 etc)
- Which TV region do you get ?
- Which channel(s) are affected by this?

Hi Sorry I havent been on here for a couple of days. Right lets be clear on this the incorrect info in the main EPG only started happening when the clocks went forward in March prior to this there was no problem with the EPG and the now and next info on affected channels there has not been a problem. I have other DTT recievers and the main EPG is always correct. the other faults come and go the other recievers also have channels duplicated or have been moved to the 800's so don't really think this would cause the main epg problem for eg if I change the time zone one hr back while the clock will be 1 hr behind the affected info in the EPG will be spot on in the EPG there is not a option for GMT+1 London ( you would think there would be!) the loan set from know how had no problems with the EPG (samsung) what so ever The other on screen message I get is: No CI Module inserted on channels that aren't PAY To View again not all the time. I still put it down to corrupted software in the set

I live in the ST5 area and get my signal from the Fenton Relay TX off Sutton Coldfield main TX

Channels in the 800s are duplicates - so the question should be whether those the set has put in the correct position are the right ones.

If they're the wrong ones and are subject to a poor / intermittent signal that could easily account for EPG problems.

Now, you've mentioned ITV 2 as a problem channel - assuming that's one which has been appearing in the 800s - the correct one from Fenton should be on UHF Channel 27

The fact you have other receivers which are working properly proves nothing. Atmospheric conditions and interference varies from one day to the next - and if you tuned in a set on one day you could get different results on the next.

And which channels are you getting the CI module message on?
