I'm not sure whether I should post this on here or on the Freeview board, so sorry if it is in the wrong place.

Today when I pressed the red button on my Samsung Smart TV (model no UE32F5300AK), a message came up saying that I needed to update my TV firmware or my apps to be able to use the red button service.

I checked apps and it said 4 needed updating and it updated them, but none of those 4 was anything to do with the BBC.

Then checked "system update" and it said there was one available, so I installed it. Still the same message on the red button. I checked apps and system update and there are no more updates available. Does anybody know what is going on, please?

Try pressing the "Text" button instead.

On my Smart TV (Panasonic), if I have the internet connected, pressing red goes to an interactive version. Pressing the Text button goes straight to the usual service.

As for the update, contact Samsung to see if they can point you in the right direction....

I tried the Text button (well, it says TTX / MIX) but it said "the channel you are watching does not support this function". On BBC1.

SD or HD? Red Button never used to work on the Freeview version of BBC1 HD (did this change recently?) Try it on BBC1 SD.

I've got a Samsung and having the same problem.

Pressing text on BBC1 (not HD) does work.

The red button only seems to work if there's a prompt for it in the corner.

It has changed on my Sony W series smart TV as well. The red button only bring up the new service via the net, you have to use text for the old one. If you access the new service and go to settings there is a page about access to the original service. It is the same on HD and SD channels. You can use either service depending on your personal preference.

I have found some info in the comments on here, showing that lots of people are having the same problem:

https://downtoday.co.uk/samsung-tv-smart-hub/

and on my tv it says that Smart Hub is being updated, so fingers crossed it's being fixed.

Oh! The Text button does work! But only if I have not already pressed the red button since turning the tv on, which of course I had done the first few times I tried it. Thank you.

Reginald Hatch posted this on another thread (from a couple of years ago) - haven't tried it yet but it might be useful for someone?

"Go to channel 200 which is the BBC Red Button, and you will see Data Service, Press Enter and then if you press the red button you will get access to the index to all the stuff on the red button."

I'm having exactly the same problem on my new Sammy.
Getting the red button prompt in the top right hand corner, when I press the red button it says "connecting" and then nothing happens.
Frustrating.

For Red Button "Channels", you can just go directly to Channels 601 - 608 I think
