Eden (Channel 4 reality series July 18th)
Year zero for a new society to be built from scratch by a group of people for the long haul.
And what wild and exotic location you are thinking may this adventure into new civilization creation be taking place: the foothills of the Himalayas or Andes, remote Siberia ? Nope: Scotland. |

Seems like a carbon copy of Castaway, which was hugely enjoyable. Will be watching this with interest.

Is it going to be like 10 Million Years BC or whatever when they have to build huts and light fires? Except for that one the huts were ready built.
I guess if it is a post-apocalyptic world there will be the ruins of houses to live in? Hopefully it isn't going to be all about survival skills or it will be so samey. |

I don't think it is either prehistoric or apocalyptic. They are just starting a society and community from scratch, assume no modern communications or anything like that.
A question though about the Scottish Highlands from a southern Irelander, just how empty are they ? Did the Duke of Cumberland really do such a thorough ethnic cleansing ? |

Have a look here http://www.ardnamurchanestate.co.uk/...estate/history A lot of the land in the highlands is owned by private estates. If you're interested you could have a look at what andy Wightman says as he's strong on land reform for Scotland. |

I am intrigued about this show so I will be tuning in. I never saw Castaway so I won't have that to compare it to. It could be interesting, especially as they will be revisiting them for a year.

Didn't realise they'd been there since March - biizarre to think that they don't know about Brexit or that we have a new PM. Or about Boris! Lucky them........

A question though about the Scottish Highlands from a southern Irelander, just how empty are they ? Did the Duke of Cumberland really do such a thorough ethnic cleansing ? The Army under the Duke of Cumberland defeated the Jacobites at Culloden, I think there were more Scots on the government side than in the Jacobite army. Many, including many Highlanders, did not support the Jacobites. It is more comicated than the simplistic version of events given by some. Whenever anyone talked of the Clearances, a colleague at work used to ask people when the last Clearances happened. They would quote somewhere like Sutherland in the mid-19th Century so he would tell them that the last Clearances were in Norfolk in the 1930s (there were also some in Lancashire around the same time). |

Thanks for the info Beecher, interesting that much of rural Scotland still exists in an 18th century post-Jacobite rebellion great estate settlement. Vast tracts of privately held land of 5000 - 10,000 acre estates will probably mean the Eden pioneers will not be that close to a Tesco or Aldi store.
Starting to understand the Scottish independence thing a bit more now. |

Sounds good in Radio Times - sounds like the producers have picked people who will do their best to get along and make productive use of their time.

Quite a lot of Ardnamurchan was owned by the Boots company for many years I think though I don't think they own any there now.

Thanks for the history lesson, just a small word of advice, best not to make sweeping comments to explain away the death of a million people due to over-population. Some people on here could get very upset by that.

the more I read about Eden, the more I'm looking forward to it.
On land reform, the following are quite shocking stats 432 individuals own half the private land in Scotland 10% of Scotland is owned by 16 individuals or groups I thought Lesley Riddoch's 'Blossom' was a really good read on this subject. |

I presume the 16 individuals and groups include people like Forestry Commission, SNH, MOD and other government organisations. |

This seems like our version of Alone, its on the History channel at the moment, 10 people on Vancouver Island surviving in the wild for as long as they can, apparently they are willing to stay for as long as a year
, i'm enjoying it so i'll be interested to watch Eden.

that sounds good - do the contestants not have any contact with each other? I'd last about half a day if I had to rely on myself for food and shelter.
3 have dropped out already , a woman cut her hand on an axe , a woman had an moment when a bear came to her camp and she didnt like it , and another guy left after a couple of days so they all left. 7 people remain. All the contestants have basic survival skills , but some are better than others, one bloke has made a basic kitchen , he said he gets bored easily
