Much of the land in Scotland is very unproductive (if productive at all) so there are large areas of land that are just mountains that is not much use for anything except a catchment area for the big hydro-electric schemes or things like grouse shooting which provides work in many remote areas despite the SNP making all sorts of threats about what they plan to do to the estates. The other big user of these areas is forestry which is something that can only really be done on a large scale because it needs a big investment. There have been community buyouts in some places which have had varying degrees of success and needed massive subsidies from taxpayers.
I presume the 16 individuals and groups include people like Forestry Commission, SNH, MOD and other government organisations. |

No they have no contact , they are placed about 5 miles plus apart, i suppose there is nothing to stop them from exploring , but it looks like a tough place to walk 5 miles.
3 have dropped out already , a woman cut her hand on an axe , a woman had an moment when a bear came to her camp and she didnt like it , and another guy left after a couple of days so they all left. 7 people remain. All the contestants have basic survival skills , but some are better than others, one bloke has made a basic kitchen , he said he gets bored easily ![]() |

Point taken about the Irish famine, it is a very complex tragedy with many factors, we can agree there. But this reply to Beecher, I must question. The top 16 Sottish landowners can't all be UK government or crown estate organisations. Some must be big private landowners and the stat of 432 owning 50% of the land is undeniably mostly private estates. Look at England, his eminence, Duke of Westminster is the biggest property owner in the country. Feudal Britain, 1066 was just yesterday.
Would it be better if more of it was owned by foreign companies or individuals who will find it easier to avoid taxes. If Socialist politicians split it all down to small land holdings as a vote grabber then the land would be completely uneconomic and quite likely sold for second homes or to be owned or managed by large companies. If the land was 'handed back' to descendants of the crofters who lived on it a couple of hundred years ago then they might only have enough room to park their car. Presumably the descendants of the Scottish settlers in Canada, American, NZ etc will also be handing back their land to the original owners! Sounds good in a student debate but gets a bit complicated when you look at details. The ones most worried are Scottish farmers who farm the more productive land and were hearing ridiculous ideas of taking it over from some politicians. |

They should make a show where, when you sign up for it you can't drop out is that allowed?

I can't see how these type of shows really work because as soon as someone gets ill, medical help is at hand or they ship them off. People always end up leaving of their own accord too because they don't want to do it any more. I'm not saying leave them all to suffer and film them surviving any way they can, I'm just saying the actual concept is flawed and the people always have some sort of connection to the modern world to help them cope whether it be therapists, medicine, electricity etc.

So you think people should be left to suffer or even die just so a rather tacky 'reality' programme is not spoilt?

I like the premise of the programme, will be interesting to see how it plays out. How many episodes are they showing in this section?

Looking forward to this.
Not sure they'll build a better society than we've got - that would take some skills - but I think basic survival will be the aim of the day. And I'll be impressed with that. Be interesting to see what they make of this. I'd pally up with the carpenter, plumber, medic and the chef...The yoga instructor and life coach not so much.

It is so unusual to watch a reality show that isn't contrived to create as much nonsense as possible.
They are skilled. They aren't set up to fall so we can laugh at their buffoonery and then celebrate their predictable success right at the end of the show like some of these other shows, And a vegetarian who's not moralising and wailing but actually considering meat and remaining calm. I would have completely understood if she did eat meat - at least there it's as humane as possible and perhaps not considered as unethical as our meat industry. |

I think they need a meeting to determine what qualifies as a meeting.
