I'm quite new to NowTV, but I've found that the quality of live TV is quite a bit lower than the boxsets. Is that normal?

I think it's to do with the fact that the channels are 'live streaming' rather than box sets which are downloaded/watched/deleted - my kids are watching kids box sets and they all seem to have HD on them as well

Yes, but it depends on what device you are using and your internet speed, for example:
Roku / Now TV box maximum outputs On-Demand at 720p (HD), Sport at 720p (HD) and all other Live TV in standard definition (although from my experience I'd say it was a bit higher than SD).

I believe Apple TV outputs everything at 720p but I might be wrong?

I have some Apple TV boxes (3rd gen) and they are pretty good on live channels, I mainly watch F1 and cricket on that platform though, rarely watch other stuff but I seem to recall it is pretty good if I do.

I've been watching on an LG Smart TV. It goes a bit pixelly when there's fast movement.

It does seem to be device dependent. Although I think they should be the same, my black Now TV box has much better picture quality than my Roku streaming stick.

Although the live non-sport channels are SD, they're better than many Freeview SD channels which operate on very low resolutions. Full-SD doesn't actually look to bad.
