It seems like the tabloids have a month late taken some of Moffat's comments out of context for a story then.
Suggesting that Matt or any former Doctor would reprise the role full time is insane. It just wouldn't happen.
If Moffat wanted to do a two Doctor type of story or something, this year's Christmas special is more than likely the best place to do it as it might look odd within the series and I imagine that Christmas 2017 would possibly be a regeneration story as well as being Moffat's final one for the show.

My thoughts exactly. Since rediscovering my interest in Doctor Who during Smith's 1st season (nothing against the Ecclestone & Tennant eras; it just hadn't captured my interest to follow it) my regard for Doctor Who fandom has very gradually eroded to its currently extremely low point. The culture of change for change's sake that has become gradually ingrained into Doctor Who has aligned somewhat grotesquely with the general cultural trend of reduced attention span, patience and boredom threshold to create quite the obnoxious fanbase.
Doctor Who fans are really quite irritating. I don't even regard them highly enough to feel the desire to be diplomatic about the issue on a Doctor Who forum anymore :P

I wouldnt want them to keep bring Matt Smith back. As much as Ive enjoyed his era he's had his time and it wouldnt be fair to keep over shadowing Peter Capaldi's tenure. I wasent too fond of the whole stick with the 12th Doctor speech they did when Matt came back in Peter's opening story.

To do so would be to completely compromise the integrity o the franchise and I don't think it's something the show could ever fully recover from. It would be an absolutely disastrous decision that would likely prevent the show from being able to move forward and endure anymore.

I don't want to excuse anything because I agree with you on many points, but I think for many the show's reputation of being something that constantly evolves and changes adds an element of curiosity and excitement about what will happen next and it can be fun to speculate while still enjoying what's there in the present.
But there's definitely a side that just wants to rush everything. If an actor or crew member stays on more than one season, then people complain that they've been on the show for too long, which I find silly.

I seriously doubt anyone is thinking in terms of the 12th Doctor reverting back to the 11th Doctor. That's never been how the series has worked. I think what's being discussed is the option of Matt Smith coming back for a multi-Doctor story, and I actually imagine Peter Capaldi being totally okay with the idea. Given how long he's been a fan he must surely appreciate what a big part of the series's culture these special stories are, and for all we know he could be keen to do one. But right now I certainly have no particular interest in who the Doctor is going to be next and I'm not going to say anything on that topic.
He has had his time, it annoys me that Capaldi's replacement is being discussed after he has only had one whole series

Two series... But yes I agree that it's very discourteous to be discussing his replacement long before anyone knows how long he'll be here. But then people were talking about who would be next almost as soon as PC was cast!

-yes two series not one series, and that's one series longer than Chris Evans from another BBC show with a global fanbase, and of course we shouldn't forget Capaldi is still there too
The Beauty of shows like Doctor Who is the fact they have far ranging scope to write in what ever they like. So anything is possible. Even if some fans would argue, but that is soo wrong.
Think back to that doctor who special when they brought back The Curator (Tom Baker) who they magically written in too. I mean that just shows anything can be done. They even wrote into the script and made references indirectly about his "now age" so if the writers really was interested in bringing him back they would and could without a problem.
But as for bringing him back as a new doctor again. Then writing some script that then basically breaks the rules about what the regeneration's were for and about would make a lot of fans very unhappy. But you also need to remember we have had some regeneration's that just healed the doctor too. Like the episode with Tennants Doctor they teased it in a finale to tease fans. Then turned out it was a fake regeneration.
So they can regenerate the doctor without changing the doctor. And we then forget about the 13 regeneration rules too?
But anyway I could go on and on and on.

He didn't consciously choose what he was going to look like. He didn't know why he'd "chosen" that appearance. Nor did he consciously control his regeneration process to produce that appearance.

Top gear was a massive international seller for the Beeb, that's clearly gone down the toilet. Matt smith was really loved in the American Market alone with the BBC in the current state I truly wouldn't rule anything out if it meant more money coming in for them.

It would have to be done just right, but I like the whole idea.
I can't see the BBC making such a controversial decision, and I can't see viewers suddenly flocking to the show at Smith's return as though nothing ever happened; the people who cry "Bring back Smith!" on social media don't represent a majority. People would just lose faith in the show if it showed it was still pining over the past and didn't have the confidence to move forward anymore. It's not like the show's a flop at present and they're scrambling over each other to fix it.

Or is it just that you feel it's OK to rewrite things when you don't like that "history" and it suits your opinion of the current run? At the very least that's inconsistent if not downright hypocritical, isn't it?
You may not like the current incumbent (show runner or Doctor), but the show has to move forward, not backwards.
I still can't believe the amount of discussion this tabloid non-story has generated!

The media and certain DW fans are like that. As soon as a new person is cast as the Doctor they immediately want either the previous Doctor or someone new. Capaldi isn't the first and won't be the last. DW fans can be quite fickle and one obvious observation to make is that some have very short attention spans.
