So, I've been with BT for two years now, but I moved home well over a year ago. Because I moved into a new build, it took them 7 weeks to install my internet service. They also said because I had moved house I had to begin a new contract, but it was ok because I could stick with what I had, which was unlimited BT infinity at 36mb.

However, it turned out they put me on the crappiest broadband they had, at the cheapest price, so I phoned up to complain, and they told me they couldn't upgrade me without renewing my contract.

Now they're charging me £47 per month because I'm "using more than I was", even though my phone charges are £0.00, and my account is actually in credit. So I told them I want to leave, and that in my opinion, what they'd done was illegal. They said if I want to leave them it's going to cost me £176, including a £30 early cancellation fee.

Can they do this? Who can I complain to about it?

The £30 cancellation fee is correct if you cancel the service, but if you are switching to another provider you don't get charged as you are not cancelling, just moving providers, and your new provider sorts it all out with BT for you.

However you would probably need to sort out the £176 first with BT, before switching providers, or at least I would.

Have you got something in writing, or email confirming what service you were supposed to be getting?

Sorry I don't have any contacts for you others who may post might be able to provide the information for you.
