Non-sports subscribers have been subsidising the Sky sports channels output without receiving any benefit, so now they do and from a Sky point of view it counters the BT Sports channels that BT tag on to their broadband.
Others wiser than me in other threads have demonstrated that Sky Sports is a profit centre and not subsidised by the rest of Sky.

That profitable that you cannot have sports without first the entertainment package!
If it made as much profit as some claim, you would be allowed sports without channels you don't want! (If like me, you don't want Sky1 or the other crap you have to have with entertainment just to watch sports!)

You can have Sport without Entertainment via Now Tv, which is a Sky product

I think you are right to an extent but there is some cross subsidy in the production of some content.

With Sky Sports Mix one of their aims is to further monetise income from existing rights, partly through ad revenue plus they are getting a bit of extra cash from
selling the channel to Virgin Media.

Also a significant amount of content is stuff exclusive to Mix or content that's only on the red button. So a percentage of the time live content is in addition to the content on Sky sports, e.g. Dutch football, some of the tennis, women's golf, netball, NFL red zone

But with NowTV you’ll pay £33.99 a month for a Sky Sports Pass... which is a lot more than you’ll pay for Sky Sports as part of a Sky package – so there’s no need for them to try and get additional revenue out of you (by making you also sign up for the entertainment channels).

More good news for cricket fans. The first day of the India v England First Test Match in a couple of weeks will be on Mix. Only the first day mind.
And for rugby they have added England Women v Canada Women on Saturday 26th November as well as the Dubai Womens Sevens at the beginning of December

Also on Sky 1. So this game is on three Sky channels overlapping with Wales v Australia on BBC One.

I dont get why sky dont have games on SSN or Pick instead if having a dedicated channel of mainly second rate games. Would having games on SSN or Pick not incline people to upgrade to Sky Sports more?

Sky won't run live stuff on their News channel and pick won't grab as much new viewers as SS Mix.

Pick would need non Sky customers to subscribe, whereas Mix only needs an upgrade from Entertainment to add Sports mix.

**DELAYED KLAXON**

No! Id much rather have a HD channel than Pick which looks like you are watching programmes filmed through a potato.

In any case SS Mix is effectively being used as a 6th Sky Sport channel for overspill.

Also pertinent (I think) is that SSM is not available to pub subs.

And with perfect timing Pick, Sky Sports Mix and Sky Sports 1 are showing Thursdays Thanksgiving NFL game between Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings 5pm-9pm.

http://www.skysports.com/watch/football-on-sky Keep clicking load more until you get to 30th Nov.

Although they might change their mind before then, they did do over Leicester v Chelsea.

Don't see why they need 3 channels for this, might as well been SS Mix and SS1.

How would freeview viewers be able to watch it then? A better argument would be not to show it on SS Mix and SS1 since sports subscribers can get mix too

I thought that SSM always simulcast something that was on one of the various Sky Sports channels.

Is this not the case?
