Well, there isn't. Will SSMix be carrying hours and hours of continuous adverts for Sky services rather than showing live or pre-recorded sport?

if you think live PL, Championship, England cricket, tennis, golf etc etc is 'poor content' or (A word i swear you have a tattoo of) niche, then you are as deluded as you sound in each post you dribble out onto here!

No it will not. I'm not sure you have read previous posts before jumping on the bandwagon but this has been covered already that BT Sport Showcase is primarily a UEFA vehicle with very occasional other free sport. The fact remains that they are both branded channels offered outside of their bundled packages - BTSS offers primarily rolling ads to lure people in, SSM will be offering occasional live events to lure people in. The end point is the same, even if they get there in different ways.

This whole thing started as an off the cuff remark at how Sky and BT chase each other around in circles and attempt to out-do what the other has done and was never intended to cause a mass debate! I think that now Sky have gone one better than BT, there will be more content on BTSS than previously. This is just my opinion. This does not mean it's fact.

Niche content from the main popular content of ive PL, Championship, England cricket, tennis, golf

If MUFC V Liverpool appears live on SSMix, you are right after all

Fair enough, however I will be happy to watch hours of SSMix and I wouldn't watch even a few minutes of BT SS in its current form, maybe that just me though.

I think there is a better way of demonstrating this point about it in context of rivalry with BT.

SKY Sports Mix has been in the planning for 2 or 3 years, evidenced by questionnaires which were sent out 2 years ago with examples of what the channel could look like (then called Sky Sports Select and another called Sky Sports Discover). BT only decided to launch showcase 18 months ago after talks to ITV to air the FTA matches collapsed.

The actual aim of Sky Sports Mix was to tackle the BT free sport offering as a whole not Showcase, i.e. customers who signed up to the BT get free sport (year one with broadband which later became BT Sport lite then from year two free Sport with BT TV.

Until now with you sign up to SKY you get no free sport at all, so it's more to level the playing field than to copy Showcase. As soon as BT launched Sky started putting a few bits and pieces of sport on SKY 1. Obviously it's also to get people to also upgrade to the full sports as well as increase income add revenue.

If anything I think Sky Sports Mix might encourage BT to improve Showcase.

I really don't see the point in trying to establish that the content on Sky Sports Mix is/ will be "niche".

We know what it is- it's content sourced from Sky Sports, a premium sports channel provider. We know that a small amount of content- e.g. first pick Premier League matches- have a higher influence on peoples' decision to subscribe to Sky Sports in the first instance; and we know that although Sky would like to encourage some Sky Sports Mix viewers to upgrade to Sky Sports Pack (or buy an occasional Now TV pass), they are going to strike a balance that doesn't cannibalise existing sales to a large extent. Thus, the majority of marquee events won't be broadcast on Sky Sports Mix.

Rich1977 has also contributed additional information (BT's "free" sport) that explains Sky's rationale for having some sport available to all Sky TV customers, regardless of their desire to buy additional "paid-for" sport.

We know so many things thanks to the sharing of information and insight by the thoughtful contributions of other posters, that trying to establish it as "niche" content doesn't offer a useful insight, in my opinion, to the content of Sky Sports Mix.

I can't see non-sky sport subscribers subscribing to sky sport to see the 2 games which are not on SSMix

It's an example, however, of content that can serve a Sky Sports Mix & Sky Sports audience to different degrees, with full coverage on the premium channel. An avid netball fan probably won't be encouraged to take a Sky Sports subscription for the coverage that is not on Sky Sports Mix; however could choose to buy a Now TV day pass to receive complete coverage, which adds to the effect of Sky maximising revenue from their sports rights.

It's important to remember, also, that it's a priority for Sky, to develop revenue beyond the traditional pay-tv subscription packages e.g. its entry in to the mobile market; and that Sky is likely thinking across several routes, how it might monetise its sports rights.

Good point and also...

It's a new sport for Sky, so they might put a lot of it on Sky Sports Mix for the first season to build a following.

Also showing 4 of the 6 games might also be scheduling, perhaps the two of the games not shown clash with other sports they already have scheduled. Too much of one sport and it's not really a mix is it.

Sky has been showing live netball since about 2010.

There is no clash for this Saturday morning's matches. But Sky Sports Mix does have New Zealand vs Australia in the Rugby Championship immediately after at 8am, as well as F1 qualifying in the afternoon, Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo in La Liga the evening, and Toronto vs Montral in MLS overnight. So they do already have an large-ish offering of live content for that day.

If you mean this question:

Then probably not as it has already been heavily discussed and answered on the thread so everyone will have just ignored it.

But, no, it is not.

The Netball Quad Series matches on Sky Sports Mix seem to be scheduled exclusive to that channel, not as a simulcast of one of the premium Sky Sports channels.

This seems odd given there are no clashes but it would mean those matches would not be available on Now TV with a Sky Sports pass, or to Sky Sports subscribers on TalkTalk TV or the lower Virgin packages that doe not carry SSMix.

It does not seem the sort of content that would make sense for Sky to specifically seek to withhold from other platforms either.

Looks as if schedules are still being finalised.

Press release says there is live sport on Mix every day - but per both SPI and the EPG I cannot see any live sport all on Mon 29 or Tue 30.

The netball on Wed 31 is on the EPG but still shown as TBA on SPI.

Press release also says a total of 178 live hours in the first month - again per SPI it doesn't look anything like as much as that.

So maybe more live content is still to be added.

Watching some of the live cricket today and there is a massive difference in PQ between Sky Sports 2 & Sky Sports Mix (SD)
SSM looks dreadful. Ive seen low-grade YouTube videos look better than SSM!

With SSM available to all Sky customers, they might have went to the much lower bitrate of SD channels they have in the entertainment bit. I'm sure it is 960x540 - Challenge I remember was the first a few years back just into Sky ownership they reduced the bitrate.

On Virgin Media the HD quality on Mix was excellent, to me to looked better than BT Sport HD as was switching between the cricket and Man City game.

SD was poor but no worse than SD quality in general on Virgin.

Have to say have a few friends with Sky and in general both the SD and HD feeds are much better than on Virgin. Pains me to say that as I'm no fan of the Murdoch empire.

One advantage SSM has over BT showcase when it comes to showing sport is it is still behind a paywall. While BT showcase on Freeview isn't which restricts which sports it can show live.

I think as a whole Sky Sports Mix is good for people who time to time watch sport but not important enough to subscribe to full Sky Sports. Also don't expect many subs to be gained from Sky Sports Mix watchers to upgrade. If anything they need to concentrate on keeping the subscribers they already have to stay as price increases aren't helping them.
