Not all teams who win a tournament sweep majestically from one game to the next.
Italy for instance couldn't beat Cameroon or Peru when winning the 1982 World Cup. Defending well and avoiding defeat is an art if not something for those who require entertainment. If you want the latter go to a theatre, or a cinema. I do admit when Ronaldo went off in the first half, part of me thought "Why couldn't that have happened in the Semi finals?" But they went on to win it anyway and good luck to them! |

In Portugal's defence too, they actually won the match tonight. A penalty shoot out would have been a most unsatisfactory way to win a European Championship.

Get what you're saying. Replace Portugal's tournament with (insert your own side here) would you honestly be bothered as long as you won it!? Really?

If this tournament proves, Greece, Denmark, Portugal can win the euro's.
Why can't England win one? How much better are these teams on paper than the current England team? Surely that must give the English players some hope? |

I'm sure it's purely coincidental that a lot of the complaining about Portugal and the way they won the tournament is coming from certain posters who said they had absolutely no chance of beating France.
The poster who said that is, oddly, nowhere to be seen tonight, having been the most prolific game after game in posting absolute rubbish throughout this tournament. |

Not my point at all. I've not made a claim about Portugal that requires them to be defended on this board.
Wouldn't bother me at all, no. Its about winning and the sooner England realise this the better. |

Well goodbye or should that be good riddance to Euro 2016. A pretty boring tournament capped by a pretty boring final.
Feel sorry for France. Most entertaining team in the Euro's and can't see that they did a lot wrong except maybe not putting Martial on earlier. Well done Portugal for their effective and dogged brand of snatch and grab football and proving beyond doubt they weren't a one-man team. And despite his drama-king antics, Ronaldo has long deserved to win a major trophy with his country. BTW I was watching BBC 1 in a pub and couldn't really hear the co-commentator well enough to pinpoint who it was. Sounded like Danny murphy? Boy was he dour. One of the very few times I've actually wished Robbie Savage was there instead. Pepe was excellent. |

Think we just over complicate things unnecessarily. Taking players that haven't played all season and trying to accommodate everyone even if they don't play in a certain position for their club and so on. Over passing it etc etc. It's not always the 'best' team that wins these tournaments but the ones that keep it simple and organised. France, Germany and arguably Italy are better than Portugal but they were very hard to break down and rode their luck a little. We just need to stop over thinking everything.

Congratulations to Portugal, nobody gave them a chance, including me, but they made fools of us all. And they did it without Ronaldo!
I was surprised at how poorly France played though, their tactics played right into the hands of Portugal and their big stars, the likes of Griezeman, Pogba and Payet, didn't turn up. |

I actually thought Portugal were a little more attacking than in previous games but that isn't saying much!
France just didn't turn up but still had their chances. Just proves what good organisation and team work can do though. |

Certainly not bad for a"terrible team".
The poster who said that is, oddly, nowhere to be seen tonight, having been the most prolific game after game in posting absolute rubbish throughout this tournament. I was actually watching the game and I don't post during games if you must know my schedule Anyway, very happy for Ronaldo and Portugal! I could tell by the anthem Portugal were up for a fight They completely destroyed the French (previously good-looking) game with that awful ugly destructive style of theirs and made it unwatchable. Portugal battled and deservedly won I thought (especially after that 8th minute shock!) I think France demoralised themselves by injuring Ronaldo. It was like they were in shock and Portugal were determined to win it "for him". Goes to show that all the media BS about Ronaldo not being popular among his teammates is utter rubbish. They seem to love him and really respond to his battle cries |

You've quite obviously stepped away from the position of "terrible team."
And as predictable as the rain, playing the stalking card to mask the lack of substance in any of your posts. Its difficult to avoid people who are constantly spamming with the last post in about 6 or 7 threads. Hell, you even changed the team you support during the final. |

Anyway, my team are Italy if you haven't seen me say it a few hundred times on this forum, so I was neutral for the final. I wanted France to win as I thought they were the best team in the tournament, but they didn't deserve to win the final the way the game went. |

I enjoyed the final having not really gotten into this tournament (too long, few top quality sides).
I don't think Ronaldo's absence from most of the game really had the impact that some (including myelf) would have predicted. I thought Portugal played at a similar level of quality after he went off and their defenders were their standout performers.. As for France, they didn't really click into gear last night but I don't think it had anything to do with Ron's exit (perhaps the pressure of the home final?) and they still had chances to win it themselves. Small margins as always. |

Even though the word "passion" is like a red rag on this forum, but (paraphrasing what Henry said) the individual quality of players only comes into play if you match the desire and organisation of the other side.
Last night, Portugal had the desire and the organisation. Their squad is much weaker than the French, and bar the obvious names, pretty terrible (both on paper and on the pitch) but last night these players played the game of their lives, whilst the French superstars didn't turn up for whatever reason. If a player who wasn't good enough for Swansea and never scored an international goal, suddenly stepped up in the most important game of his career and became the national hero, and if a usually leaky keeper suddenly turns into Lev Yashin, if Pepe turns into a cool-headed leader etc etc... and France's players can't match that, then Portugal deserve their win. Pogba was terrible - his market value just dropped by £50million; Payet was largely anonymous and rightly replaced; Griezmann almost disappeared from the scene. Only Sissoko (and possibly Coman) didn't deserve to be on the losing side. |

I was lucky enough to be in the French end in Marseille for the semi final. Paris doesn't have the same fans. Plus seats for the final were beyond most ordinary French fans.
The Marseille game was physically and emotionally draining. I was just watching sedately, enjoying the game (btw they stand all game there, despite the seats and jump constantly) but was pouring with sweat still at midnight. It must have been 35 or 36 degs at least on the pitch. At the end Griezmann, Pogba, Payet looked exhausted, particularly Griezmann. He could barely walk. Very disappointed that they couldn't see it through but I really like the Portugal fans (if not some of the players, or the park the bus way they play). France were poor last night. I think it was fatigue. Pogba was played out of position by Deschamps. I can't help wondering if they'd have won it with Gameiro picked ahead of the hopeless Gignac. Pepe and the FB were excellent and everything their keeper parried fell to a red shirt. |

I have never really seen what the fuss was all about with Pogba. Maybe he is a decent player in Italy for an excellent Juventus team, but there are plenty of other players out there who could do a better job for a fraction of his touted transfer fee.
