Yes. Otherwise it's pretty pointless.

The rumours are that the Apple Watch 2 launched in September will work without an iPhone.

I love my Apple Watch!

Although in reality even with an iPhone the Apple Watch is pretty pointless. Same issue afflicts Android wear devices too - all pretty much pointless

Different people like different things. I know I use my Apple Watch all day every day. It's amazingly useful to check texts, screen calls, check the weather, track my exercise, make NFC payments, and occasionally tell the time!

I wouldn't call it pointless, it does have some handy features if you can't be bothered to get your phone out of your pocket and quickly want to check your bank balance or dictate a quick text to someone or receive a notification of some kind like a late running train or a reminder for something later in the day.⌚️

As I said to someone who asked me recently how I find the Apple watch, my response was "well it solves a lot of first world problems, but I'm sure I could survive without it".
