Hello,

TV has broken, so I need to buy a new one from a shop today.

Don't know much about them - anyone know of any good in-store offers on a model? Needs to be 38" plus and have USB, that's all really! I suppose an internet TV with netflix built in would be good?

Thanks

Most Smart TV will have what you want, i'd recommend going to John Lewis or Richer Sounds if you have one nearby. If not then it's a decent TV shop or one of the larger retailers.

You would need to decide what is the most you would want to spend, that will dictate which TVs will be available within that price range.

Without knowing your location, I'm going to assume your local stores are Argos, Currys or the supermarkets.

Argos have got an LG 43" smart tv for £290 that would appear to do what you need.

Avoid the own brands which will be cheaper. Safest bets would be Panasonic, Samsung, LG or Sony - probably best to decide your budget and go from there.

How about something like this:-

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-...43875-pdt.html

Same price at John Lewis & Richer Sounds as well.

Ignore: over budget.

Just to say ....... Presumably, the old tv just died, so u know the existing aerial is ok ? if unsure, look up ''digital tv cliff effect'' via Google Search or whatever .......

Worth a mention that John Lewis has advantage of free 5 year guarantee and Richer Sounds now do a free 6 year guarantee.

Not sure what Curry’s or Argos give other than the normal guarantee’s although if I remember right Curry’s used to match the JL guarantee deal a few years back.

Screen has gone black but sound is still there - could that be cliff effect?

Have you got a DVD player, Xbox, Playstation connected to your TV? If you are getting just sound and no picture with those then that probably rules out the aerial as the root of your problem. Also if the TV's on screen menu doesn't come up then it's going to be TV and not aerial.

No. The "digital cliff" refers to what happens as the signal off the aerial goes down in level. For quite a wide range of signal levels you see very little effect on the picture and sound. Then a point is reached where the picture begins to break up and very soon after that the TV gives up altogether.

It would be very very unlikely indeed that you would get sound and no picture as a result of this.

And of course it does not apply to things like a DVD, Blu-Ray player, games console or some form of media streamer.

A referb is £180 including post. I did look at smart tv's at first but the content isn't guaranteed. Like Samsung lost YouTube on their tellies that once advertised it as a given. No thanks, I'll stick to google cast or something else cheap for the 'smart'stuff....

You could have got your old TV repaired for less than that!

Pray tell - on what basis can you made such an outrageous claim Winston?

The OP said he was getting sound but no picture.

That could easily be either a panel failure or backlighting failure and as those who actually repair such sets (e.g. Nigel Goodwin) have often pointed out, a replacement panel usually far exceeds the cost of replacing the set.

Yes, a ludicrous claim from Winston (as usual ) - the most likely cause of the problem is a duff LCD panel, which would cost more than a new TV (if it was even available).

There are posts on here that claim it was lost after an update. That's a specific thing. What I'm trying to hi-light is the fickleness of online content when you buy into smart TVs. On a tablet or phone you just get the app and that's it. Buy a SMART TV and you might get iPlayer but not All4 or the ITV hub.

Just my thoughts after a new tv. The Newby is as thin as its sound so all the money saved on smart is being spent on a Bose Solo

You got lucky I suspect the providers are trying to get a fee for allowing a tv company to access their content. Whatever, I bought a cheap TV without smart as it made sense yesterday. Tomorrow you won't get a choice, it will be built in anyways...
