Is snobbery against Soap Operas justified?
Due to the quick pace, a lack of practise time and the type of plots written, many established actors seem to want to turn up their noses at the soaps we love.
Then you have the soap actors who leave their show and pretend it never existed! Has anyone got examples of actors and actresses who have done or said anything snobby? A question to answer and an example to give. (Made 100 posts and this is my first thread!) Thanks to EVERYONE who has been kind or quoted my posts. |

If I was the boss, after reading that, I'd axe her big time! Why is she in the show if she doesn't like it?

I vaguely remember Dennis Waterman being very vocal about how his daughter Hannah (Laura Beale, EE) was "too good for soaps".

Do i think the snobbery against soap is justified - no I don't. As stated in the opening post, they have to work on what is effectively a factory line with a fast turnaround for learning lines, little or no rehearsal time and rarely get to go for a second take for reasons of their performance (ie, I could do that better, can we have another take), usually only if there has been a technical issue
Given all that, they really do some outstanding work although there is also some very mediocre stuff. For all that, of course they will rarely, if ever match the quality of a fime of short series which has a 'beginning, middle and end' and has been written and then filmed then edited over months or even years. And many actors will crave that time to evolve creatively aside from anything else. There is also a skill to being able to do the same scenes, or even line over and over again for maybe days to get the 'right' shot and keep it fresh. They're just different skill sets same as not all theatre actors will adjust to tv or film, or even want to. And vice versa. Re specific examples of snobbery or people being ungrateful, pretty sure Patsy Palmer has said some stuff about Ee during one of her breaks and James Corden slagged off Hollyoaks. |

Although it has to be said that saying in public you hate your show is a different kettle of fish and maybe not so politic (although I haven't seen the Bev interview referred to). |

No indeed, a lot of people in the "biz" don't enjoy what they do. Kenneth Williams in the end hated the Carry Ons, and I'm sure I'm right in thinking Jerry Springer didn't have a lot of time for his talk shows.

No because you can get strong output and brilliant actors and actresses in soap. In the same breadth, you can get poor film productions, with bad acting or writing. And for one like CS to last 50 years it must be doing something right

I don't really find it surprising that a lot of actors don't watch much tv, and especially their own show. After all, would you want to spend your leisure time watching other people do what you've finished doing for hours at your own work? I loved watching adverts until i started working in advertising, then i hated looking at them during my leisure time.
There is another thing particular to watching your own show and that some actors state they don't want to know what is happening with the other characters as if their character doesn't know, it might influence the performance in any scenes they have with them. Basically they have the attitude that anything their character would knnow, they would have to act out and they shouldn't know more than that. Hence they only read their scenes in the script. Other tlhing of courses many actors don';t want to watch their own performance and the easiest way to avoid that, is t just not watch the whole thing. |

Soaps exist because viewers like the escapism, you can be entertained without it hurting your brain. Sure, there are classically trained actors who can deliver drama such as performing in Shakespeare plays and while entertaining as that can be, there is still room for soaps.
Soaps can still be written in a clever manner, although these days sadly they seem to cater for the lowest denominator. But the tone is generally much lighter and its this that attracts viewers. My work can often be complex, so the thing I look forward to of an evening is sitting with a cup of tea and watching some entertainment. I do think EE for the most part is trashy, but that's generally down to the writing than the actors. For instance, Steve McFadden and Diane Parish are RADA trained. In recent times, a lack of acting jobs means that more big name actors are turning to soaps for employment. Timothy West, Bonnie Langford, Danny Dyer, Annette Badland, Jan Harvey etc have all turned to EastEnders in recent times. Acting in soap requires different skill sets to acting in a play or a film. The biggest of that being less rehersal time. Soaps churn out episodes and that doesn't always give room for preparation of scenes. Soaps do need to adapt however, they all seem to have a core audience at the moment. But multiple episodes a week means that there is less room for original content. They can be quit stagnant, especially at it seems that they struggle to come out with new ideas. |

Danny Dyer calling Emmerdale 'that farm soap' in a period when ED was doing miles better than EE (Woolpack vs Tuna Gate)

Absolutely. Plus, you've got to realise that some soap actors may only have a passing interest or knowledge in the show and it's past storylines - I remember people on DS being up in arms when the Corrie writers "forgot" about the baby son that Kevin lost, and going on about how could Michael Le Vell possibly not have reminded them? But really, why should he remember a plot detail from 15-odd years ago or whatever it was any more than anybody? Some actors may be in to the show they're in, still a good few others won't be.
Sorry, probably veering off topic a bit there ![]() I'm sure MLV did actually say that he told the writers beforehand but he was ignored. |

Speaking of Beverley Callard she is a big fan of EastEnders, judging by her tweets. Even she knows EE is better than Corrie
