Looking at the clips from 1960 he has one.

Now he doesn't.

Seeing as he's lived in the same place all his life, where's it gone?

Probably when he went to University or Teacher Training College, can't remember if he has a degree or not.

Bill Roache gave up doing the accent, probably by around 1965 if not earlier.

EDIT: it was never explained on screen.

Same thing goes for Annie Walker.

If you look up early scenes of Roy Cropper, his accent was pretty different too.

If he deliberately tried to lose it, that would be fair enough. He sounds "educated northern" but totally not the same as he did to start with.

Yes! David Neilson put on a very strong 'northern' accent until about 1997 when he gained the accent he has today.

Especially for someone when studying English Language for a degree, trying to correct your own speech would be inevitable, IMO.

Do we know why this happened? I only ask cos David is a fab actor and I see no reason why he wouldn't have continued ..?

I would guess it was when they decided to make Roy a more prominent character. Up until late 1998/99, Roy had been portrayed as an oddball who floated about in the wings, frequently the target of other characters' misconceptions that he was in some way a sex pest/pervert. When he first appeared he lived in one of Mike's flats on Crimea Street and Deirdre thought he was spying on her. Sometime in 1997 Leanne Battersby accused Roy of being a pervert because he wouldn't give her a job in the cafe. None of this was true, of course, and Roy's caring nature always shone through with the characters he was close to. He was also shown to be interested in the paranormal and acted as 'ghost hunter' when the Duckworths thought the Rovers was haunted. This scene is interesting because it shows that Roy was much less socially awkward and would quite happily engage in fairly in depth conversations with strangers.

Anyway, it was only when he took over the cafe from Alma and met Hayley in 1998 that Roy started to be the 'Roy' that we know today. He gradually became quieter and more socially awkward and I think the change in accent was part of that. In many ways, Hayley became the 'voice' of the relationship and Roy took a back seat but I don't think that this was actually acknowledged on screen.

I'm in two minds now.
