The goal that changed the tournament.
Before I start in fully expecting it to be pointed out that plenty of goals can pretty drastically change tournaments, but I can't sleep and I've been thinking about this one in particular so humouring me would be appreciated
![]() I reckon Icelands injury time winner against Austria completely changed the face of the tournament. That goal, the last kick of the game (I was there and they didn't even bother to kick off again) moved Portugal from 2nd to 3rd place. If Portugal finish 2nd they would have met England (and presumably beaten us) in the last 16. France in the quarters. At this stage Portugal still hadn't registered a 90 minute victory, but it's hard to argue they'd have lost when they've beaten the same opposition tonight. Semi finals would have been Germany... I'm absolutely confident Germany would have beaten Portugal. Of course it's impossible to prove but that's what I think. That leaves the other side of the draw without Portugal possibly seeing Wales into the final. I'd make a case for Croatia as well who I felt were very unlucky against Portugal and there victory over Spain showed they were capable of beating most sides from that half of the draw. That leaves a Germany vs Wales or Croatia final, it Iceland don't score that 94th minute goal. Anyway, that's my late night thought that I just felt the need to share. I'm sorry I can't give you the last 60 seconds of your life back

I have a theory that tough matches wear teams out.
So Italy had a tough job against Spain, and then lost to Germany. Germany overran Slovakia, and then were too strong for Italy, but by the time they played France they had lost a lot of players. Portugal had an easier draw although they made hard work of it. In all seriousness, playing Wales was a lot easier than playing Germany. You see this in a lot of world cups. The draw brings the better teams together, and whichever one wins, they are apt to struggle in the next round. |

I was similarly thinking about that Iceland goal this morning and how it gave Portugal an easier path to the final. Football is always about the tiniest margins.
Just the ball going in to the crowd and how it is thrown back changes a match completely. |

Another goal that completely changed Euro 2016? Ronaldo's second equaliser against Hungary - had he not scored that, Portugal would have lost, they'd have finished on two points and would have been eliminated.
Yep, and how bizarre that Hungary were the only team who knew how to score against Portugal

It is, of course, a game of opinions but I feel that suspensions played their part.
Had Portugal and Wales been at full strength when they met I reckon Wales would have had a decent chance of winning it. They missed Ramsey a lot for me. |
