Fantastic norkage on one of the competitors, it'd be sexist to say which one. (maybe I should put this on the best boobs thread?)
Yes and perhaps you should stay there.

No serial killers in the teams tonight for a change, though.

Why? What's wrong with enjoying a high brow quiz show and also appreciating fantastic norkage?

Both seemed very slow to get started last night, but then Balliol really got the bit between their teeth and Imperial just seemed to implode and wanted out of there.
Was heading to being one of the lowest scoring games half way through before Imperial fell asleep and Balliol got into their stride.
Paxo was unexpectedly quite kind to the losers, he could just as easily have had a go at any other team with such a losing margin.

I almost felt sorry for Imperial, as Balliol got lucky with the art questions. From that point on, however, they made their own luck. And my sympathy with Imperial was diminished by their not being able to guess *any* of the three most important post-war German politicians...

I thought Paxo was a bit inconsistent last night over two questions:

Can't recall the exact questions but the answers required were 'Taylor Swift' and 'Phylum'. Both questions were interrupted and answers of 'Swift' and 'Phyla' respectively given.

Result : 1st answer 5 point penalty, 2nd answer accepted.

I reckon each contestant knew the correct answer, just didn't use the exact wording required (having interrupted). Fairer to penalise both or neither IMO.

Of course I did...but I like it for the competition andtrying to answer questions first, and puzzling over the gender of competitors second...but I'd join in that on the thread too.

I just like to see what others could get that I couldn't... I'm very easily impressed.
University Challenge and the General Knowledge part of Mastermind are my favourite quizzes as there is a high density of questions to answer and they are at a good level to test one's general knowledge. Some other quizzes have far too much drivel in between the questions (Eggheads, The Chase etc).

In the first case, the question required first and surname, which was clear when it was asked in full.
In the second case the plural form of the word was an acceptable answer (it did look as though there had been some editing at that point so they probably stopped the recording to check).

He did mention two things (if I remember correctly), so to answer that they were phyla would have been technically correct.

But then I'm a bit picky - I do wince a bit when people refer to bacteria and algae as singular forms.

Balliol had strength in depth I thought. No Peterhouse-style dead-cert teams yet in this series, but of those we've seen, Balliol were definitely ones to watch.

Jezza was definitely right on the Swift/phyla questions, too: 'Swift' just meant you'd sussed who wrote Gulliver's Travels - not 'enough' by any means - whereas ruling out an answer because of the singular/plural term issue would be perverse.

Worst ever performance from Imperial. Could they not have mustered a better team?

Eggheads yes, The Chase definitely not.

The American format for the chase is slightly better than the UK one as we do not have the Chaser striding in accompanied by music before each contestant's questions. Also, the multiple choice format is not something I am keen on. I do watch those programmes (and 15 to 1), but just prefer the flow and the content of questions in University Challenge and the latter part of Mastermind ( I will admit to fast-forwarding the whole of the specialised section unless there is a topic that interests me).

I was very disappointed with their low score. The norkage was perfectly pleasant, but I thought she had exceptionally kissable lips. If only they had progressed further!

Fair point about the Chaser's dramatic appearance five times a show.

Apologies if this has been raised before but I find the question master extremely irritating when he describes a year as, for example, "twenty oh one". This was never done at the time for the years 2000 to 2009, it was always "two thousand and one", so to me he just comes over as a prat.

I think I agree with you although I feel the reverse is true when applied to the previous century. For example "nineteen oh seven" rather than "nineteen hundred and seven" or indeed "one point nine thousand and seven"

For the more mature fans of the show. Just wondering if, when the announcer says "Asking the questions ..." anybody else can't help but instantly finish the sentence with
" ... Bamber Gascoigne"?

Personally, it happens every time!

I have a small collection of gallinaceous fowl who enjoy the programme immensely

For some very odd reason, when he says that I always say " Miss Cilla Blaaaaaaack!"
